“The good thing about automation is that you don’t have to involve real people to make decisions. The bad thing about automation is that you don’t have to involve real people to make decisions.”

Indeed and this is what scares from relying completely on Google's services.

joshbaptiste··on Why American Marriages Are Set Up For Failure
The absolute best resource I have read on why monogamy does not work in modern times in (mainly) developed countries is here: http://www.blackdragonsystem.com/uploads/3/9/7/2/3972480/why...

joshbaptiste··on AngularJS 1.0 released
I was juggling between knockout and Angular for my next project, after watching some demo's Angular gets the win.
joshbaptiste··on Getting Started with Batman.js
Coming from mostly back end Python/Shell/Go hacking, I have an in-house project that requires a single page web interface and of all the frameworks I reviewed Angular.js and Knockout.js are definitely my top 2 choices, mainly because their declarative syntax just makes more sense to my non Javascript expert brain.
joshbaptiste··on DTrace in the zone
Troubleshooting with Dtrace specifically the Solaris variants (since Solaris contains the most probes) teaches you a lot of general Unix internals that usually only dedicated kernel/User land programmers would know.
joshbaptiste··on V8+: Node.js Native Extensions in C
The FAQ, is hilarious.
joshbaptiste··on Bpython is a fancy interface to the Python interpreter
Heh, The overall sentiment in irc freenode #python is a general dislike of ipython and a recommendation of bypthon as a good alternative to the REPL. It's a pretty light alternative but I still generally use ipython these days.
joshbaptiste··on Jython 2.7 alpha1 released
Far from it, Jython devs continue to attend and present at Pycon. Although these days I've been using Groovy lately for my JVM.next() needs.
joshbaptiste··on Linux's awesome and underused traffic control facilities
indeed, The main reason tc(1) is underused is because it is under explained.

joshbaptiste··on Hello world in every programming language
I prefer the FizzBuzz examples as it also displays the simple looping constructs of the languages http://rosettacode.org/wiki/FizzBuzz

Edit: Grr it is missing one of my favorite JVM.next() languages of the week Kotlin, I will have to update it.

joshbaptiste··on How useful is a Physics degree?
If you become a good programmer then you are good either way, but definitely any company that deals with software that relies heavily on physics (3D Gaming, animation, movie special effects etc..) you will have a competitive advantage with a physics degree.

I love this, simply the "Requests" of option parsing.. option parsing for humans.
joshbaptiste··on Facebook acquires Instagram
Congrats to Instagram, Django-powered projects making it big.
joshbaptiste··on Mod_redis
Thank you for this comment sir, you just saved me some days of coding a Python/Flask middleware application I was going to build to handle connections between an in-house browser application and Redis, very cool indeed.
joshbaptiste··on Free 18GB Dropbox account now possible through referrals
The simple reason I love Dropbox has less to do with space, but ease of use on ALL my devices. Currently syncs my files on my Ipod touch,Nexus S,Linux boxes, and Android transformer prime tablet. I even use it as a trigger to kick off a reverse ssh tunnel from my VPS nodes, (since I allow Openssh to only listen on localhost). The way it seamlessly co-exists with my exiting setup and not get in the way is grand.

joshbaptiste··on Poll: What Would It Take For You To Switch To Blackberry?
I have two phones, an Android Nexus S and a work issued Blackberry Bold 9800. I was once on the road and forgot my Nexus and heard a cool tune on the radio. I quickly grabbed the BB and ran Shazam to try to get the song name, after about 20 permission pop up confirmations the song was over , I got pissed and simply swore off Blackberry since.

joshbaptiste··on The Way to Go (golang)
bah.. Ebook is some Adobe DRM format, that I would venture is unusable in GNU/Linux.

Test data

  josh@snoopy:~/Downloads $ dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=1024K count=1000

  josh@snoopy:~/Downloads $ gzip -l test.gz
  compressed uncompressed ratio uncompressed_name
  1176024 1048576000 99.9% test.txt
with -p2 it runs ~2 sec slower
joshbaptiste··on Many times faster (de)compression using multiple processors.
Had to try this on my quad core laptop, as I never heard of these tools .

  josh@snoopy:~/Downloads $ grep -m2 -i intel /proc/cpuinfo
  vendor_id : GenuineIntel
  model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz

  josh@snoopy:~/Downloads $ ls -l test
  -rw-r--r-- 1 josh josh 1073741824 2012-03-07 20:06 test

  josh@snoopy:~/Downloads $ time gzip test
  real 0m16.430s
  user 0m10.210s
  sys 0m0.490s

  josh@snoopy:~/Downloads $ time pigz test
  real 0m5.028s
  user 0m16.040s
  sys 0m0.620s
Looks good.. although the man page describes it as being "an almost compatible replacement for the gzip program".
joshbaptiste··on Review my startup, StartupPacks.com
Indeed my first thought was, cool how do I try this out? Then I wasn't sure what to do, is the product in beta? is this merely a landing page for something soon to come? I then tabbed back to HN to check comments for more insight.
