joshbaptiste··on Comparing Smart Locks: Lockitron, August and Kevo
The prices just aren't there for me to care just yet, I'll wait for a $99.00 or less price point before considering smart locks, but there should be a huge market in the smart home space.
joshbaptiste··on Internet Explorer 11 Developer Preview for Windows 7
I never understood why IE had to place every downloaded item into C:\TEMP and then move the item into the darn drive I preferred in the first place.
joshbaptiste··on Bjork Brings Biophilia to Android With a Little Help From Apportable (YC W11)

joshbaptiste··on Video shows plane's moment of impact at SFO
I'm betting the fact that they were older and maybe not that technically savvy is the reason for not being on twitter,Vine,Instagram,Youtube immediately. A technically savvy person's first instinct is to share this footage instantly and receive the credit/thousands of re-tweets etc..
joshbaptiste··on Armchair air crash investigator
indeed, which will take ~2 years
joshbaptiste··on Europe and Japan Aiming to Build 100Gbps Fibre Optic Internet
heh.. I bet the NSA can't wait to sink their hands in this link.
joshbaptiste··on Memory access pattern matters
Cool post, the mechanical sympathy group is all about exploiting today's CPU/Memory caches to their fullest usually referencing Java and C, great to see C# based examples of this.

joshbaptiste··on Show HN: Complete list of Google Reader alternatives
I prefer this list as it summarizes all in one page
joshbaptiste··on Getting Unique Counts From a Log File
It amazes me at work how many people just violate UUOC/UUOG

ie..

  cat file | grep bar | awk '{ print $1 }' | sort | uniq
which can simply be

  awk '/bar/ { print $1 | "sort -u"}' file
joshbaptiste··on Tmate - Instant terminal sharing
I really really like this project.. combined with some HTML output page of some sort, one can display errors in real time to an interested party for debugging purposes.

Indeed.. I guess if your interested in working with top levels of government these are good resumes to scan to give you some insight on what to know and/or expect.
joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: Favorite mailing lists, IRC channels
#python #bash #awk #go-nuts on Freenode...
joshbaptiste··on [dead]
Unfortunate.. yet why is HN telling me this
joshbaptiste··on Spies Like Us: How We All Helped Build Prism
Yep indeed the likes of Google/Facebook/Yahoo open source technologies have made it much easier for the government to create the tools needed to sift through terabytes of data, yet even if Hadoop/Map Reduce etc... were closed source I'm sure the big G would have come up with their own solution.

joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: How important is a degree?
Don't worry about posts that contain degree requirements, many will interview you anyway, also see https://medium.com/this-happened-to-me/8f381aa6bd5e
joshbaptiste··on Can You Still Become a Quant in Your Thirties?
Hmm.. the only profession I can think of where being in your thirties is a disadvantage is some form of sports.
joshbaptiste··on A faster way to delete millions of files in a directory

joshbaptiste··on Why do users click randomly and rapidly when an application hangs?
Since I'm always in some sort of tmux/screen terminal, I find myself cycling through some combination of Ctrl+a q,Cntrl+q to make sure I didn't turn on flow-control (Ctrl+s).

joshbaptiste··on FreeBSD expands activities as funds flow in
Two reasons I recently switched to FreeBSD on my home servers, Dtrace and ZFS. In GNU/Linux I would need sort combination of strace, mpstat, ltrace, vmstat, iostat etc.. to find out the the things that a simple Dtrace script can tell me and also without dramatically affecting a running daemon process as the ptrace* system calls do.

joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: What IRC channels does everyone find interesting?
Freenode: #bash #python #go-nuts #awk
joshbaptiste··on Who Cares If It's Been Tried Before?
yep, HN'ers especially are very well aware of this.. the only critiques I usually see on "Show HN" is how does your X product differentiate from already existing Y product, not oh this was done before don't bother etc...
