josh_fyi··on Amarna Letters
They were not Akkadian. Akkadian was the international language of diplomacy in that area, as English is today, or French was a century ago.

"Canaan's elite was either Akkadian" -- the writing was done by scribes, who were a kind of elite, but the kings did not write these themselves.

The language is Akkadian, with heavy influence from the Canaanite of the authors.

josh_fyi··on Ask HN: How many times equity should I get in exchange for salary?
Even if a company exits very successfully, ordinary employees may get almost nothing because of ordinary agreements and conditions for other investors. Dilutions, ratchets, drag, tag, earn-out, black-out, convertibles, preferences, preemptive rights, etc. etc. You may not understand these (I only understand a few); if you do, you don't necessarily know every condition that each other investor is getting; and if you know that, you have no control over future changes.

To be clear, each of these is a quite ordinary business condition with justified business reasons. There would be no intention to harm you, as your employee share is too tiny for anyone to bother over.

But such complications can result in you getting little, even in a big successful exit.

josh_fyi··on NASA overspent $15M on Oracle software bc it was afraid an audit could cost more
Why does any company nowadays start using Oracle?
josh_fyi··on Unearthing a long-ignored African writing system
Indeed, just as French language and Latin-based orthographies for languages in this reason are the result of a colonial legacy, so too the use of Arabic as a prestige language (mentioned in this article) and an Arabic-based orthography.
josh_fyi··on It's easier and faster to pirate an e-book, than it is to buy it
Use annas-archive.org to search across pirate sites. Works well; no login neededs.
josh_fyi··on It's easier and faster to pirate an e-book, than it is to buy it
Yet strangely, the word "buy" is used in the Kindle store. Seems like straight up commercial fraud.
josh_fyi··on Little Free Library
We call these "Guilt Alleviation Stations" where you go to get rid of your books. We have always believed that books must be treated with respect, yet nowadays, there is less and less reason to keep massive numbers of books. Yet there is no market value to most books and indeed, few opportunities to give them to charity. So, exactly what you need is a place you can come to drop off your books and then run away before anyone stops you :-)
josh_fyi··on Repairing Your Car in Your Own Garage Is Considered Illegal in Sacramento, CA
Home auto repairs are a way for the poor to gain an income and build skills. Large formal garages see that as competition and arrange for these laws to slap it down.
josh_fyi··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
"Balls to the wall" has nothing to do with anatomy (nor does balls-out). https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/balls-to-the-wall#English https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/balls-out#English
josh_fyi··on From Ben Franklin, a Gift That's Worth Two Fights (1990)
Investing it means not using it. Plausibly, boosting economic progress by training people produces much greater long-term benefits than putting the money away.
josh_fyi··on Twitter staff cut after Sat deadline because they didn't check email on weekend
Why are people still working there? Is it just those who are stuck on a visa or have severe financial problems? Are these people truly enthusiastic about the mission?
josh_fyi··on The Wyoming corner crossing case
Certainly. If instead they had 20' tall poles covered in spikes (with a gap of 2" in between so as not to impinge on public property) that would not be a question. I am glad that that is not happening!
josh_fyi··on The Wyoming corner crossing case
Why don't private landowners firmly set two tall metal poles, covered with razor wire, 2 inches from the corner?

I support public right of way, but it seems a landowner who wants to de facto seize the public land could do that.

josh_fyi··on Iran abolishes morality police
Referring to the most recent coalition, as listed here,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty-sixth_government_of_Isr...

The Islamist party I mentioned was United Arab List and the leftist ones I mentioned were Labor and Meretz.

josh_fyi··on Iran abolishes morality police
An Arab party and two leftist parties were in the last coalition, though the Arab party was Islamist and the leftists parties were not Arab parties.
josh_fyi··on WTF Is T_paamayim_nekudotayim (2013)
As a Hebrew speaker, I have to say that even though one should stick to English in code, paamayim nekudotayim was probably used because it rhymes; it has rhythm; it sounds like nothing you would say in ordinary circumstances.
josh_fyi··on Ask HN: Do you look angry while you work?
When I am in the zone and people talk to me, I have a tendency to turn around suddenly, startled and distracted.

So, I have trained myself turn around suddenly with a big smile and cheerfully say "How are you doing :-) :-) :-)

It seems ridiculous, but better that the alternative.

josh_fyi··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
It was 25 years ago, so I don't remember. However, even if today I could get all my rights back -- indeed, if I could get compensated for a reasonable author's royalty going back to the start -- the amount of money would not be worth noticing.
josh_fyi··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
I signed away rights to the President and Fellows of Harvard College (the legal name in this context for Harvard). That was not a problem as it was clear to me that this would not be a money-maker for anyone. The business-side was handled by Eisenbrauns, a small publisher. When the owner retired, the business sold to Penn State. Later, the Harvard Semitic Museum (the part of Harvard in charge of the series) sold the rights to Brill. I am guessing that Harvard Semitic Museum saw this as a chance to get a little bit of money out of their asset, and Brill saw this as a cow to milk to death, the way the price for legacy software is raised to sky-high levels as the product dies. And indeed, I am guessing that Brill is not making much -- no one did. https://www.sspnet.org/community/news/brill-announces-collab...
josh_fyi··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
I was delighted when my book showed up on Z-library! I of course was never paid for authoring that book; indeed I paid a subvention to publish it with Harvard University Press. At some point, the rights were sold to the giant publisher Brill, which was charging $30 per chapter for a book that has no value by chapter.

Luckily, some kind soul at University of Marburg uploaded it and Library Genesis still has it.

josh_fyi··on London Mews Directory
What has London come to? Housing for horses and servants now serves as £10m money-havens for foreign oligarchs.
josh_fyi··on Employee gift ideas that make people feel bad
My feet are very large (available only at specialty retailers), so a sock gift risks being useless.
josh_fyi··on American society is so focused on race that it is blind to class
City University of New York had an incredible line up of world-class genius graduates, because they took the Jews who were excluded by the Ivies. For some reason that never translated to prestige status for the university.
josh_fyi··on US Supreme Court to weigh end to race-based college admissions
US private colleges cost about $250 to $330k for am entire BA.
josh_fyi··on US Supreme Court to weigh end to race-based college admissions
How do American colleges police the statement of race?
josh_fyi··on Ask HN: Can one be self-employed fixing bugs?
Don't sell yourself just as a "bug-fixer". Sell yourself as a lifesaver when a company has a terrible problem so severe that it emdangers millions in revenue, or even the whole company.
josh_fyi··on The deception of “buying” digital movies
Has anyone tried a legal challenge to the word "buy"? It seems like a straightforward case of misrepresentation.
josh_fyi··on Columbia whistleblower on exposing college rankings
In the US, if you can get accepted to a PhD, you get full scholarship, especially in STEM, but also in other fields. You can drop out in a year or two and get your masters. (I got my master's this way at Harvard, though I also finished the PhD. Nothing was required but the first year of course work and a language test.

Far less expensive and possibly less work than going directly to masters.

But if you do want to pay for a professional masters', then unlike undergrad, the specific program may be more important than the reputation of the university as a whole.

josh_fyi··on Regulating email providers
One alternative is to have your own domain, but run email on a service like CloudFlare, Mailgun, or even Google. If you get cut off, you can change provider and redirect the DNS records.
josh_fyi··on Ask HN: What does your company do to reduce cloud cost?
The first two functionalities are for instances; the last two are general.
