josephhurtado··on Orthodox Privilege
Good argument, but the naming is wrong.

It is NOT orthodox privilege, but the complete opposite we are dealing with today.

Let's remind ourselves what orthodox means: "Following or conforming to the traditional or generally accepted rules or beliefs of a religion, philosophy, or practice."

Well nowadays the non-traditional views are trending, and shutting down the traditional views. So the "orthodox privilege" actually belongs to the NON-ORTHODOX folks who like to push their opinions to everyone else, and have the backing of major media, and academia behind them.

That is the reason why freedom of speech is dying in society today, and is being replaced with conformance, and silence. This is dangerous, and bad for democracy. Democracies require an open, respectful sharing of people's views. When those views are persecuted, the people are cancelled, the companies are boycotted, we have a problem. That problem is UN-ORTHODOX PRIVILEGE.

josephhurtado··on Typora: A truly minimal markdown editor
Beautiful editor, one of my favorites, and surprisingly free and multi-platform: works in Mac OS, Windows and Linux.
josephhurtado··on Show HN: Darklang
I wish it was possible... as of now Darklang is mostly a language that only runs inside of Dark; that will be a problem in the future, but I understand that it's early days, and this was the sound decision to do now. Godspeed!
josephhurtado··on Show HN: Darklang
Paul, first of all kudos on what your team has accomplished so far. And plenty of respect on having the courage to attempt a leap on how backend technology works.

IMHO this as the first time we have improvement in the huge complexity required nowadays to have a backend, particularly for a small company which can not afford a whole Devops or Infrastructure team.

Just a one question: - Given your use of OCaml and Reason ML why did you choose to go with your own language instead of using one of them. Wouldn't it be easier for developers to adopt say Reason ML, and then just use a library you provide?

josephhurtado··on Two creators are not always better than one
The most important part of the article is that is shatters the myth of having a co-founder to succeed. The stats don’t say that two founders are better than one, it fact is the opposite, more than one is WORSE.

So what would be my take-away; if you are thinking of pursuing a business, and have the energy, contacts and network to make it, go ahead. However if having help from a valuable co-founder who you trust is possible, then compromise, and get a helping hand. Otherwise is better to go it alone.

josephhurtado··on The old guard of Mac indy apps has thrived for more than 25 years
That sucks for sure. I bought both for iOS. But hardly use OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner has worked like a champ though.
josephhurtado··on The old guard of Mac indy apps has thrived for more than 25 years
Nice article indeed. Two amazing products missing, probably because they came with OSX OmniGraffle and OmniOutliner; both classics that keep innovating and nowadays also run on iOS: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Omni_Group
josephhurtado··on Reading Mathematics (2002) [pdf]
Useful, to the point, non controversial, and short. AWESOME.
josephhurtado··on Etsy Announces Move to Google Cloud
It begs the question why Google Cloud and not MS Azure or Amazon's AWS?

Could it be a price break they got, and also the AI advantages of Google Cloud's offerings? I am sure that played a big part.

josephhurtado··on New type of quantum supercomputer based on light and dust
Tremendous potential that once again shows us computational power will keep accelerating. From the article:

"We are just at the beginning of exploring the potential of polariton graphs for solving complex problems,” said co-author Professor Pavlos Lagoudakis, Head of the Hybrid Photonics Lab at the University of Southampton and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, where the experiments were performed. “We are currently scaling up our device to hundreds of nodes, while testing its fundamental computational power. The ultimate goal is a microchip quantum simulator operating at ambient conditions."

josephhurtado··on Alan Kay has agreed to do an AMA today
Alan,

What do you think will be the impact of Cognitive Computing, and AI on the way software will be built in the next 5 years.

Do you think AI may automate fully some jobs, or part of the jobs people do today in IT & Software Development?

If so what do you think is the best approach professionals should take?

Thanks in advance for the answer, and thanks for doing this AMA.

Joseph

josephhurtado··on How to fix Agile? Agile 2.0, Kanban and the rise of Ultra Light Methods.
Of course there is no magical process, and focusing on product, people and market are always good principles.

But what Agile Development should also provide is a framework, a tool kit to deliver value with minimum overhead. That is precisely what Agile 2.0 should be all about. Please take a look at the article and you will get my point: http://bit.ly/Agile2-UltraLight

josephhurtado··on How to fix Agile? Agile 2.0, Kanban and the rise of Ultra Light Methods.
Take a look at the article: http://bit.ly/Agile2-UltraLight

Having Agile that is process heavy, is precisely what we have. But there seems to be already answers to improve the state of things. Those new methods are part of Agile 2.0.

Early Agile methods, like Scrum or XP are indeed process heavy. =)
