josch··on How to list all the targets on a Makefile
One thing you win is that the name of the script can give you a hint as to what it does.
josch··on Germany bans digital doppelganger passport photos
This ban probably comes as a response to this activist project by the Peng! collective: https://pen.gg/campaign/mask-id-2/ where they used morphed portraits for passports.
josch··on Haskell Problems for a New Decade
"pervasive multiple-dispatch design tailored towards JIT code generation" sounds interesting. What is the relationship between the two?

That is not necessary since a while ago (Xcode 7).
josch··on Making the move from Scala to Go
I guess Scala being "the most expressive typed language on the JVM" is true in the sense that it has a ton of features (OOP, FP, Exceptions, null Java backwards compatibility, etc.), but that's just too many features for a coherent language.

So you need to use a different phone number than the one you usually use for WhatsApp? Then you wouldn't be linked to your friends anymore, right?
josch··on Emacs Is My New Window Manager
http://www.sxemacs.org, an xemacs fork, works as a window manager. hasn't been updated in a while, though.
josch··on RMS on why Emacs lisp doesn't have namespaces
The Oberon OS works that way as well.
josch··on I've never seen a language's style guide recommend avoiding comments before
Leo Brodie says in "Thinking Forth" in the style section: "The most-accurate, least-expensive documentation is self-documenting code". I am sure there are other prior examples.
josch··on The Future of Markdown
Not really answering your question, but more to the point of the discussion in my opinion, a() + b() could be ambiguous if a() and b() are functions with side effects and the evaluation order of the +-operator is not specified.
josch··on What's the one Linux command you wish you knew years ago?
also cd - which goes back to the last directory you cd'd from.
josch··on Microsoft UI has officially entered the realm of self-parody
I would love to be able to remove a (huge) file without going through the trash can.
josch··on Touch based WP7 programing environment and language by Microsoft Research
it's probably not there yet: http://www.ycombinator.com/rfs5.html
josch··on [dead]
for me, the interesting thing about this article now is that it is the latest one on cutts' blog; there is no newer one which talks about mahalo.
josch··on CLisp on Nokia N900
golang for maemo comes with the plan 9 c compiler. not sure whether you can use system libs with it, though.
josch··on Ask HN: Review My (Twitter) App: Follow Ham
i just got the report. i.e., http://twitter.com/1000free is considered ham by your app, looks like spam to me. maybe a feedback button would be appropriate (mark as spam/ham.)
