jordibunster··on The world of Japan's PC-98 computer
I remember trying to install Slackware as a 16 year old living as an exchange student in Japan and not getting anywhere. Turns out PC98 needed a patched kernel.
jordibunster··on Marine pilot loses command after ejecting from F-35B that kept flying
I’ve never flown an F35. From what I understand they’re basically rockets that “fly” because of software that makes micro corrections several times per second.

Maybe if the screens are out the pilot couldn’t rely on that?

jordibunster··on How to deal with extreme physical pain
I get both! Mostly clusters, but on occasion I'll have a looooong headache that I can't shake, and after a while I start feeling the nausea and realize it's a migraine.
jordibunster··on How to deal with extreme physical pain
I saw the title of the article, read it, and came back to the comments to find fellow clusterheads.

Wishing you pain free days!

jordibunster··on Kafka, GDPR and Event Sourcing
I used to think so too (that's what iPhones and the like do on "erase", btw) but doesn't that just push the problem into the future, when computers can more easily crack today's encryption?
jordibunster··on As epidemic rages, ER study finds opioids no better than Advil and Tylenol
I take that for every tension headache (which isn't often, I mostly get migraines and clusters): 3 ibuprofen and 2 tylenol.

I had no idea the labels said otherwise.

I believe the study, but I've also taken opioids for pain and for me personally there's no comparison. Not even close. Placebo?

Yammer (Microsoft) | Redmond, WA | Onsite | Full-Time | Variety of positions

Yammer is looking for awesome engineers to join the team in Redmond, WA located in the Puget Sound region and close to Seattle. Send your resumé to brida @ microsoft.com or apply at one of the URLs below.

About Yammer: At Yammer, our mission is to change the way people work, and that mission starts with us. We use our own product every day to promote and encourage our culture of openness and transparency. Yammer provides each user with a voice, empowering individuals to share ideas, ask questions, and voice concerns. We're passionate about building a great product that people love to use, and we're always on the lookout for similarly product-minded engineers to join us. Our engineers work on rich, complex problems. At Yammer, engineers don't just get handed specs and mocks to build — we work in an iterative and collaborative way with Product and Design to create the best possible user experience. As such, we need people who are enthusiastic, ask great questions, enjoy collaborating with a cross-functional team, and have strong opinions but aren't afraid to admit when they're wrong.

We hire smart people, expect them to learn and grow, and trust them to make day-to-day decisions. We care most about creating products people love. To enable that, we move quickly by pushing code to production throughout the day, we iterate, and we value learning over shipping features.

jordibunster··on Ask HN: What's your favorite CLI or ncurses program?
git
jordibunster··on Making Postgres Bloom
Internally using hashtext(), which is not a good idea for a bloom filter for a few reasons, one of which is http://www.postgresql.org/message-id/CABUevExTx2whgSpKaoMVow...

jordibunster··on Why Ruby Class Methods Resist Refactoring
I don't get it. They're both methods. There's no such thing as "attributes" in Ruby.
jordibunster··on Mozilla will put ads directly into Firefox
It takes a lot to say things like "user-enhancing programs" with a straight face.
jordibunster··on Your emails may reveal text hidden in Microsoft Word
coördinate is so pedantic, I love it :)

I forget where I read it, but some publication in the US uses the "interpunct" to the same effect: co·ordinate.

jordibunster··on Gmail was down
Have you tried outlook.com?

Disclosure: I work for Microsoft (not outlook.com team though).

jordibunster··on Writing a modern web app with Go, TDD, REST, and AngularJS
The HTML anchor in my previous link is not surviving the auto-linking (it needs the last '.'), but see point 4 (Who can get a .cat?): http://domini.cat/en_sunrise_faq/index.php#t14
jordibunster··on Writing a modern web app with Go, TDD, REST, and AngularJS
It's not available to everyone, I don't think: http://domini.cat/en_sunrise_faq/index.php#p4.1.
jordibunster··on Scala at Yammer (2011)
What did you expect would've happened to it?
jordibunster··on Sex Machine: Get gender from first name in Ruby
When you say things like "updated his profile" in your app, you're talking about individuals, often times to them. Those people have feelings, regardless of how "professional" the context is.

So don't assume anything unless you want to exclude people who don't fit in that binary box. It's not about being pedantic, it's about being considerate.

jordibunster··on A multi-purpose EDITOR variable
The smaller the commit, the more likely that it needs a proper explanation of why it was made.

When you find a commit from two years ago that changes a constant from -1 to -2, and the commit message says "constant change", or "bugfix in floobers" you're left with no context.

jordibunster··on C++14

jordibunster··on Parse Launches Cloud Code to Run Custom Code for Your App
I assume there're execution limits to avoid while(true) {}. Can't seem to find information on that though.
jordibunster··on Add two-factor authentication to your ssh in 30 seconds
I don't think google-authenticator does that, I think Gmail does that.
jordibunster··on Yammer CEO predicts Silicon Valley is over
Disclaimer, I work at Yammer.

I'm not going to plug our product's features here, but I'll say this: microblogging is not an accurate portrayal of what it is anymore, and hasn't been for at least one and a half years.

jordibunster··on Amazon Glacier
I think the key here is not to just provide a toggle for using Glacier instead of S3, but to have the historical snapshots migrated to Glacier from S3 and deleted every 90+ days.

I will gladly pay more money for Arq again.
