jops··on AI Police Reports: Year in Review
Well said, and thank you for the final paragraph. Made me chuckle.
jops··on The Rise of Whatever
Exactly this. LLMs make learning faster and easier for those who _want_ to learn, but conversely make it harder for those who don’t.

jops··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
If Signal had a 'Create group from WhatsApp' option then most of my groups would have switched over in an instant.
jops··on Matestack – Reactive UIs in pure Ruby
Even if this was a good idea, the push on commercialisation puts me off. And as other commenters have said, the DSL feels like it would end up being a hinderance. Stimulus (and perhaps StimulusReflex) feel like the safer bets for the dynamic rails future.
jops··on I've now played with a Raspberry Pi 400 for a week and here are my conclusions
I learnt to program on the ZXSpectrum with "Write Your Own Adventure Programs for Your Microcomputer" [0]

The RPi400 with Pico-8 seems to tick the same boxes, so I got one for my 10yr old. He's loving it. Perfect use case.

jops··on A guide to live chat tools for startups
I'm a late stage Intercom customer, very disappointed by their price gouging. I also find their 1 day support response time for existing customers, in contrast to immediate responses for new prospects very telling of their general ethos. This article is welcome.
jops··on Show HN: We made a meeting companion app on macOS to improve remote meetings
Yes! Sidecar should have the option to show the iPad screen for presentations in OSX. Drawing apps on iOS are much better suited to live-doodling with a pen than OSX ones.
jops··on Firefox 76
Same sort of issue for me, but I use the Chrome bookmarks toolbar - only shown on new tab. It's the main thing I miss on FF.
jops··on TablePlus – Modern, Native Tool for Database Management
I've been using Postico for years. High quality software.
jops··on Show HN: Video conference and synchronized YouTube video to do fitness in groups
Nice. Most of the instructors on our system* have pivoted to run their classes online like that now too. YouTube or Vimeo synchronized with a live Zoom.

It's actually working really well for them as they can now open to a wider audience! It's great to see how people have adapted so quickly in the lockdown.

jops··on 24 Hours of Rust Game Development
Only partially related to the post topic, but this rust game project is worth checking out - https://github.com/citybound/citybound
jops··on Just Read the Book Already
Amazing! I didn't know about outline. So much nicer than the original. Thank you.
jops··on Introducing Messenger Kids
What can we do to protect our world from the the mega-corps degrading society and eating our souls with their moral compass lacking commercialisation of our very existence? Serious question.
jops··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2017)
Bookwhen | Rails & JavaScript | Oxford or REMOTE in UK | Fulltime | https://bookwhen.com

jops··on How computer programming languages for kids have evolved and where they're going
State machines in games should be a lure enough for the kids: http://gameprogrammingpatterns.com/state.html
jops··on Linode DDoS continues – Atlanta down for 16+ hours
Agreed. Attacks like this should be turned into a national issue and not left to Linode to deal with alone. I hope the NSA or FBI or whoever are investigating.
jops··on Just doesn’t feel good
Flappy Bird
jops··on Show HN: SpaceBase – A Sass-based Responsive CSS Framework
Agreed. A single kitchen sink page would be enough for now, just to get a feel for the base styles.
jops··on High Speed Robot Hand Dexterity [video]
My first HN LOL thanks!
jops··on Xip.io: Wildcard DNS for everyone
A word of warning for any UK based BT customers: xip.io doesn't work on BT Home Hub 5! I recently upgraded to the 5 from a Home Hub 3 (which it worked fine on), but had to send it back because of this. The 'BT tech experts' couldn't give an explanation. Has anyone else had the same issue?
jops··on Ask HN: What do you use to organize your knowledge?
Me too.. until recently, because there's no way to switch to a fixed width font. So I've moved to the built in mac Notes app. You can hack the resources files to set a plain background and better default font.

As soon as Simplenote allow font changes, I'm going back though for the Android cross platform support.

jops··on Introducing OneNote for Mac
OneNote 235MB, Simplenote 1.2MB

I know there's no comparison in functionality, but if words are all you need then that's 233.8MB less bloat!

(If benhuberman's listening - please give us font options!)

jops··on [dead]
Quick first impressions: Cutting edge designs nicely implemented, but personally I find these style of websites a bit annoying to navigate. Not their fault though. Web design is all about trends and this framework is certainly riding on the latest.

Also, I liked this little gem: "This is a probably the best plans ever born"

jops··on Fedora 20 released
With Gnome 3.10. Nice. Even nicer with the Phosphene theme: http://hdni.github.io/rice/assets/phosphene_preview.png - https://github.com/hdni/Phosphene
jops··on RethinkDB raises an $8M Series A
I'm looking forward to the LTS release so I can feel more comfortable using it in a production app.

A slight aside, but I spotted this (currently broken) integration of RethinkDB and Meteor the other day and wanted to share. It does away with the long poll Meteor is doing on Mongo. (I have no involvement in this project at all.)
