jophde··on California wants to tax companies for executive pay ratio
Im actually for doing something about income inequality but most of the homeless problem has nothing to do with it in SF. The main issue is the city lets a lot of psychotic people that need help do whatever they want with no consequences.
jophde··on California wants to tax companies for executive pay ratio
They cannot even manage shutting down a blatant stolen goods market / fence on 15th and Mission.
jophde··on Things that I think will be important in the next decade
Yea I know... sadly its the best option right now.
jophde··on Things that I think will be important in the next decade
Personally I have been moved to only use a desktop computer with Linux on it and switched to a Go Flip 3 dumb phone. It's helped my sanity quite a bit. I'm convinced tech peaked in 90s and the desktop dream was the best one.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/2019/09/11/you... CNBC saying you need $350k a year for a middle class life in SF and NYC.

I'm including series D companies under the term startup. I agree with you about early stage companies. Jobs at non FANG that don't IPO are not that sustainable imo.

Now do people 25-35 that are buying in todays market. That might take you longer than 30 seconds though.

I was surprised to see that Amazon (Twitch) is in SLC as well. What sort of paycut would I be expecting. I think my current gig would probably make me go from $170-$150k if I went remote. I assume the top end wouldn't be what it is in the Bay Area but maintaining > $150k is reasonable with 10+ years of experience?

Thanks, I will check out Phoenix. Assuming you are a little older since you moved in 2006, do you feel like the top end of your career has been held back at all by not being in one of the major tech hubs? What does your role look like now.
jophde··on Ask HN: What Technologies to Learn in 2020?
Sort of my plan. Working on math and then through an Algorithms book and an Algorithms Course from GaTech OMCS in the summer. Planning on interviewing in the fall. I have accepted the game.. After that Id like to use my new math skills to dive into QM/QC. TBH its the only thing that seems like “new tech”. I suppose web 3 is interesting haven’t had a chance to dive in.
jophde··on Ask HN: What Technologies to Learn in 2020?
Well the sad truth is grinding Leetcode is much more likely to get you a job at big company where you will make 2x as much and work 1/2 as much as startup. You are right. The only thing that matters is how well you do on the LC like interview. If you do poorly but pass you get deleveled no matter how much experience you have. If you do well because you practiced the same question the night before you just massively increased your salary and rank because obviously you are senior.
jophde··on “No, we’re telling everyone we are using Java”
It's like people think Java only supports concurrency via thread pool and isn't capable of event loop / async io models.
jophde··on The Lisp Curse (2011)
There are a few fast startup JVMs out there that will run Clojure code.
jophde··on Silicon Valley and Black Coders: Howard University fights to join the tech boom
Asians and Indians are basically considered white in the Bay Area at this point.
jophde··on Why Are 20-Somethings Retiring?
You must be CS Undergraduate
jophde··on Why Are 20-Somethings Retiring?
$25k a year covers about half the rent in a place where you will get paid six figures after school. I am not sure you know what financially independent means.
jophde··on Why Are 20-Somethings Retiring?
Do you need to work again before you die?
jophde··on Why Are 20-Somethings Retiring?
Seems about right. Wow this site is full of people with delusions of grandeur. It's hilarious how people wonder why others hate techies.

News flash, not everyone is in software. If you are I still doubt you are actually independently wealthy. Again, unless you were born that way.

Sorry for not doing a mathematical proof for those of you that think having $50k in the bank by the time you are 30 is independently wealthy when you haven't even put a down payment on a house in SF yet.

jophde··on Why Are 20-Somethings Retiring?
Yea, I am sure the percentage of 20-somethings who are actually financially independent is less than .0001%. Everyone else inherited money or gave up all hope of finding a real job.
jophde··on Spacemacs 0.105.0 released
Easily the best editor going imo.
jophde··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
Sorry about that. They all have tools that make them work on Android. Kotlin is reasonable option imo. It doesn't effect app startup and runtime size is so much smaller compared to the others. Clojure Android adds 3 seconds to startup time for example. I haven't used Scala so I am not sure how nice it is for Android.
jophde··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
I bet my Clojure or Groovy version will be simpler. I agree Scala is super complex :). Maven does suck. Gradle wraps it and does not suck. Probably the best build tool I have ever seen.
jophde··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
It's pretty damn closed to 1.0. They just released M12 which adds support for interop with Java libs that use annotation processing such as Dagger.
jophde··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
I guarantee you could write a more power efficient app using the Android SDK versus Go in the NDK.
jophde··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
Very true. I am starting to not see the point of Go. It's about the same performance as the JVM languages and the JVM is just as easy to deploy. On the JVM you get to choose between Clojure, Scala, Ruby, Groovy, Kotlin, and more. JVM is just as easy to deploy as a Go binary too. Personally, I plan to stick with JVM languages plus Rust.
jophde··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
Maybe but this won't ship until at least M so if you min SDK is even as new as KitKat it won't help you much.

Kotlin gives you lambdas, named parameters, extension functions (like C#), data classes, first class null, and more today on all versions of Android.

jophde··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
Please for the love of all things holy please stop saying Swift would be great for Android or that Google is porting Go to Android. As an Android developer for the past four years I can assure you that there is zero evidence that Google is moving the Android FRAMEWORK to Go. There aren't even any plans to support lambdas and Java 8. Also, pretty much everyone on the bleeding edge of Android is planning on moving to Kotlin. It has even more higher level and functional abstractions than Swift or Go, full interoperability with Java (even in the same file), and almost no performance hit.
jophde··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
It already IS. You can compile Android NDK libraries with Go today. It isn't that useful because the NDK isn't hooked up with the Android framework which means you don't get lifecycle events. There was a whole Android framework written over the past decade or so in Java that abstracts this.
jophde··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
You shouldn't be getting down-voted. The idea of anyone rewriting the entire Android Framework in Go when you can use better languages like Kotlin, Scala, Groovy, Clojure is asinine. Go will compile to Android architectures so you could do shared code in Go between iOS and Android like a C++ lib. That makes sense.
jophde··on “Swift will be open source later this year”
Why would I ever care about Go for Android when I can write apps in Kotlin? Kotlin is fully interoperable with Java. I don't have much experience with Swift but Kotlin is so nice. It has the best features from numerous languages such as Ruby. C#, etc. It's being made by Jetbrains who makes the the core of Android Studio so it will have support. Kotlin is also nearly as fast at runtime as Java with a tiny 200kb runtime. Almost all the magic happens at build time so your build time will be a little longer. Kotlin also works with any existing Java library, even annotation processing libs.

Again, why would any Android developer choose Swift? Kotlin also runs fine on the server and it even compiles to Javascript.

If I were a startup doing an iOS, Android, and a backend I would do either Go or Rust on the backend. You will be able to distribute a native lib with your Android or iOS that shares network and model logic. Go and Rust both are planning on supporting cross compilation to iOS and Android.

That would leave you with Kotlin/Groovy/Clojure/Scala for the view layer of your Android app if you choose not use Java. Which is a good idea since there is no indication from Google Java 8 will be supported which means no lambdas unless you use an alt JVM language. On iOS you write your view layer in Swift. Both apps use the shared binary library.
