joot82··on Microsoft: Copilot is for entertainment purposes only
I imagine Microsoft like any other bean counter company heavily quantizing the GPT models or whatever they use to serve it at scale with minimal cost.
joot82··on The Rise of Ritual Features: Why Platforms Are Adding Daily Puzzle Games
Sort of, it's growth at any cost. If you're saturated in organic video views and ran out of ideas how to increase that, maybe you can still glue some mobile gamers to the platform.

joot82··on ETH Zurich and EPFL to release a LLM developed on public infrastructure
The model will be released in two sizes — 8 billion and 70 billion parameters [...]. The 70B version will rank among the most powerful fully open models worldwide. [...] In late summer, the LLM will be released under the Apache 2.0 License.

We'll find out in September if it's true?

joot82··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
She was mainly brought on to fix relationships with advertisers, they were just pulling out that time because of rampant nazi and hate speech (by users) on the platform, after they fired the content moderation teams. I think she did what she could over the last 2 years and some of the ad revenue came back, but after the latest MechaHitler escapades I guess she got some texts from people...
joot82··on AI at Amazon: A case study of brittleness
Sure, long term that would probably drive or lock a lot of customers to them and make them not bother about ChatGPT anymore. However, Amazon might have a lot of compute, but I'm not sure if it's enough to enable every Alexa speaker with state of the art conversational AI. OpenAI and Google constantly have to screw with the rate limits to satisfy demand.
joot82··on Access to broadband internet causally linked to reduction in suicides
better quality of life leads to lower wish of dying it seems, who would have thought
joot82··on Ask HN: What's the best car without undesirable features?
Check out Volkswagen that have been built between 2019 and 2021 (MY for Canada, US and EU might be a bit different). They usually come with Android Auto already (worth it for traffic and music - you can use OsmAnd or alternatives as well if you want zero tracking), BUT all the climate and radio and steering wheel controls are still physical buttons. And at least for Canada there are is no cellphone module in the car. There actually was for US market, but apparently since it supports max. 3G and the network has been shut down US wide end of 2022 they are truly offline as well now.
joot82··on Alaska 737 cockpit voice recorder data erasure renews safety debate
Probably not, but with a 25 hour recording window one could make sure that the previous crews did not notice any irregularities (that they might not have reported) or anything else that might have lead up to this incident. That's pretty mind boggling that a modern age voice recorder doesn't even support storing the timespan of an intercontinental flight.
joot82··on Eating fewer calories can ward off ageing
archive.is and archive.org are different pages/organizations
joot82··on Studying stars with central black holes
it would only be a pinhole at first, though start to grow quite rapidly(? no idea in what time scale?) and at some point consume the sun quite violently from within, no?
joot82··on McDonald's to retire self-service soda fountains by 2032
They're only there for people that don't want to install the app, just sit down at a table and order it right to your seat.
joot82··on BMW drops controversial heated seats subscription
I just wonder why they're so obsessed to make heated seats an optional feature to charge for... it comes standard these days on so many other cars in lowest trim, including Volkswagen (which is considered less premium in Munich). If they see scaling benefits by equipping every car with heated seats just do it and price it in the base offer. The backlash from this probably cost them more than they can ever raise through a seat subscription.
joot82··on ChatGPT user sessions are down 29% since May
In North America (at least Canada, I assume US too?) school year starts next week after Labor Day. While I know staggered school returns from some parts of Europe and some might be back in session already, universities often don't start lectures until October.
joot82··on Grindr employees have 2 weeks: agree to move across the country+RTO or lose jobs
great idea to mandate back to office when a new COVID mutation is surging around the world, including rise in hospitalizations... /s
joot82··on You Are Atlas, You Hold Up the Sky
Same motivation as forwarding chain letters. Being superstitious and hope for invisible internet magic helping those poor orphans in need out. Just that you hold up the sky here.
joot82··on Ask HN: Is it feasible to launch crowdfunding for a dog shelter in Central Asia?
I worked for a cat shelter in Malaysia, besides local donations they got the majority of their funding through GoFundMe, paired with updates and campaigning on Facebook etc. Personal contacts and trust played a big role in this, the manager was an American expat and hosted a bunch of volunteers every month (that's how I got in there) to gain some exposure.
joot82··on OpenLLM
Discord is just a rich IRC replacement. You can log and search in IRC too but nobody seriously tries to archive information for research later. And big difference is it's all closed and operated by one entity that can change conditions at will. Don't even try to use it for anything else than real time chat.
joot82··on /r/startrek/ migrates to lemmy
It might get reopened at some point, probably under some arbitrary rule that demotes the current mods and choses a new team, but reddit corporate itself won't moderate any subs too soon because that would expose them to a whole new set of regulations and liability. They are currently just providing the technical platform and not being responsible for content.
joot82··on Apartment rent growth is declining, shifting the market to the tenant’s favor
sad but probably true, everybody in charge is invested
joot82··on Reddit is OpenAI’s moat
They know hardly anyone would pay for a social link aggregator and discussion board, but some people might donate a coffee to a beloved app developer on their phone. Hence the only way forward in their mind to charge for API calls. Even if it kills many of those apps, some will suck it up and charge their users. That it makes life harder for LLM competition and benefits their guy Sam is just a nice side effect. But I'm pretty confident that there will be daily reddit dumps available for training very soon as Torrent for anyone that can't afford to hide their scraping, if they not already are.
joot82··on [dead]
What's the benefit of installing this black box app over using an open source TOR browser? I assume these microblogs are hosted somewhere?
joot82··on Spezless – A Reddit clone without u/Spez
Isn't the base version of reddit, without the crappy UI and image hosting, already open sourced? Just go from there. Probably easier to install than building a counter for your email signups.

joot82··on Rheinmetall pilot project for curb stone chargers for EVs
Hydrants, lamps, bicycles, tires, ... anything that looks different from a standard curb. Not sure if doggy will be attracted by the cover when in ground, but by a nice oversized plug sticking out for sure.
joot82··on Ask HN: Where to Feature Startup on Spanish, Portuguese, German, French?
Biggest IT news site in Germany is heise.de, they also have a catalogue with software and service providers - you can contact their team at software@heise.de (if it's a commercial proposal with subject: "Kommerzielle Listung bei heise Download" according to their FAQ at https://www.heise.de/download/page/Haeufig-gestellte-Fragen-... )
joot82··on Wendy’s, Google Train Next-Generation Order Taker: An AI Chatbot
They do it at Tim Hortons Drive Throughs too already, not sure if overseas but definitely someone in a call center taking the order. I'm torn about it, why resist technology and progress. But yeah, I guess root cause is they can't find enough staff on site because they pay too low.
joot82··on Twitch source code and customer data has reportedly been leaked
it depends which legislation you reside in, I believe most allow you downloading stuff like that as long as you don't reshare (uploading and sharing is the part where Amazon could go legally after you)
