That article would be more credible if it didn't give two examples of dual-core tablets (Dell and Motorola) that shipped "in volume" that actually flopped. Which raises the question of just what kind of volume they were shipping in - probably orders of magnitude lower than the kind of volume the iPad 2 ships in.

I dunno, but you could always call the C libraries from Objective-C, and call the Objective-C from Swift.
jonhendry··on Introducing Swift
Less ambiguity, allowing the compiler to optimize more?

"(And as for Java, it was my understanding that Apple had hobbled it by refusing to release updates on a timely basis.)"

That's a different, later issue.

Early on in the life of OS X, Apple offered a Java interface to the Cocoa class frameworks. In theory, you could write OS X applications using Java, calling into the Apple frameworks instead of using Swing or whatever Java frameworks.

This wasn't all that well supported, didn't perform well, and wasn't popular.

I learned Objective-C before I learned C, back in the early 90s. Before that I'd learned Basic and Pascal. Objective-C clicked with my brain pretty easily.
jonhendry··on Introducing Swift
Some of the new docs I've seen let you select Objective-C, Swift, or both.
jonhendry··on Introducing Swift
You can mix Objective-C and Swift code in a project, so it would be easy to progressively port code one class at a time.

Porting NSView subclasses first would give you a win, because if you use Swift the classes can draw themselves at design time in Interface Builder. (Objective-C view subclasses just draw a white rectangle in IB.)

Probably because they wanted one that integrated well with their existing frameworks, and which really took advantage of their investment in LLVM.
jonhendry··on Introducing Swift
That's how I always felt. I liked the clear differentiation between C function calls and method calls on objects.

Firstly, your link says nothing about customer deposits, it's about bank derivative holdings. Which aren't insured by FDIC.

But, yes, because it's pretty unlikely that all banks will fail at once, it's not necessary for the FDIC to have on hand a sum matching all insured US bank deposits.

There are also limits on coverage. If you keep $1 million in your savings account, you won't get all of it if the bank goes under.

"It's sad times we live in when creating culture is labeled "labor", "work" and so forth."

It's sad when idle consumers come to believe they are entitled to the product of another's labor for free.

"The price of a good programming book is about £20. "

If only we had a global computer network by which you could find a much cheaper used copy. Or even a free loaner copy.

jonhendry··on Requirements for DRM in HTML are confidential
You seem to have confused "wants" with "needs".

Unless I'm mistaken (I may be) GOG is primarily in the business of selling old games, which is why the publishers are willing to forgo DRM on the titles.

Publishers of new games (especially expensively developed new games) are more likely to fear a loss of revenue, especially in the crucial early period after release, without DRM.

"unabashedly post in this disgusting manner,"

What, "mildly critical of Google"?

Dude, get some perspective. Are you 12?

jonhendry··on Julian Assange claims his encrypted laptops were stolen in 2010 while traveling
Note that the scenario they're talking about is where Assange were himself hidden in a bag labeled as if it were a diplomatic bag.

People smuggling under such false pretenses is probably at least arguable in court as a violation of the spirit of the convention.

The economics of producing child porn and the economics of producing actual physical drugs are wildly different, so I'm not sure how that's even relevant.

You can make child porn with point-and-shoot camera, a memory card, and any location that is available for ten minutes. Mobility is high. Distribution is cheap.

"Paying for CP (and thereby directly contributing, economically, to its production)?"

You can contribute to its production without paying money. It's like people cracking copy-protected software for status, rather than for money. They get 'paid' in other things they value.

I assure you it's not limited to "Western society", at all.

He can write a book too. And he has free time now to do so.

True, however, the vast majority of rapes of women are by men, and the vast majority of rapes of men are by men.

It's not like the issue of men being raped is predominantly due to women, whereas the issue of women being raped is predominantly due to men.

I also wonder if all the 'alpha male' bullshit might actually be a detrimental influence on prison rape, since it so clearly reinforces and mimics the sort of hierarchy that exists among men in prisons.

You've never heard of a double entendre?

How many terrible jokes have been made along the lines of "I'd like to put my hard drive in her RAM slot".

Jokes like that were old and corny 20 years ago.

HINT: though it uses the terms "hard drive" and "RAM slot", as used, they don't actually refer to a hard drive or a RAM slot.

It's entirely reasonable to know what forking and dongles mean in the normal sense, yet to hear comments about "forking" and "big dongles" and understand they're not being used to refer to the usual things.

"but there appear to be sufficient statistics to back up Gupta's assertions:"

One of Gruber's points is that Apple never had the most market share in smartphones. So they haven't lost anything in that respect.

But Apple had, and still have, most of the profits from the smartphone market, with Samsung coming in a distant 2nd, even now, at about half of Apple's iPhone profits. And the other vendors are losing money.

jonhendry··on Update from the CEO
Might be sort of like a non-compete period. Instead of being contractually bound to not compete for a period after leaving a company, which isn't always enforceable, pay the person enough to stick around for a while, perhaps with limited access to information about upcoming products.
jonhendry··on C++ Grandmaster Certification
"GCC suffers from layering problems and leaky abstractions: the back end walks front-end ASTs to generate debug info, the front ends generate back-end data structures, and the entire compiler depends on global data structures set up by the command line interface."
