Eh? It's easy to move cars between GB and Europe, because there are car-carrying Chunnel trains and ferries that help you do so.

EBay Germany has plenty of RHD cars listed from German sellers.

And what side the steering is on doesn't really matter if you're just going to chop it up for parts.

jonhendry··on What happened to LendInk? The owner responds.
Probably makes sense, since it's relatively easier for the car to be spirited off to mainland Europe and beyond.

Yeesh, I don't even remember the Phoenix lander. Kinda crazy that there have been enough to start losing track of them.

What's interesting is that there are probably whole categories of commercials that don't air any more, crowded out by pharmaceuticals (and political ads).

Spirit vs. letter.

It's no surprise this sort of thing would pop up. It's not unlike the problems that arise due to things like car sharing and airbnb, when insurance companies and landlords get involved.

Insurance companies are probably willing to let it slide if you let someone else who's insured drive your car, and landlords generally allow you to have guests. But lending your car to complete strangers, for money, and letting complete strangers stay at your apartment, essentially short-term sublets, are not really what they are prepared to tolerate, at least not without altering the terms and rates they charge for coverage or rent.

There are winds. The wind is what would clear dust off the solar panels of the other rovers. I think that is what allowed them to run so long - the winds were stronger than expected, and cleaned off the solar panels better than expected, so more power was available. If I'm not mistaken, the engineers originally expected the solar panels to get covered by dust in a matter of months, at which point the rovers would stop working.

I tried it once. It gave me a rash.

It didn't used to be like that.

"They do this because you can't make money selling a $1 peace of salt-rock that lasts the customer a life-time."

Your preferred brand can't either, they sell it for $7.

" Just because they are registered in the U.K. doesn't mean they are clean, I'm sure there are plenty of companies registered in the U.K. that are up to no good."

Definitely. There are UK-registered companies that are little more than shells, but are connected to arms dealing organizations and similar.

I'm pretty sure there were already accessories on the market at that point. I don't think the iPod Hi-Fi was the first high-end iPod-oriented speaker system.

The server rooms might not be nearby. They might be located closer to the big exchanges' servers.
jonhendry··on Ask HN: Why doesn't NASA live stream the Curiosity video feed?
Here's an article about Curiosity's image capturing capabilities. It'll take some pictures first thing when it lands, but we won't get them for about two hours, because of the timing of the satellite orbits.

jonhendry··on Ask HN: Why doesn't NASA live stream the Curiosity video feed?
Because it doesn't send live video back to Earth. It sends pictures to the satellites that orbit Mars, which relay the data to Earth, and it only has periodic contact with those satellites.

So I don't think it has the bandwidth for video. It'll probably be a fairly slow data rate, more like a progressive GIF downloading.

I suppose it could record video, and send it back, but it wouldn't be real-time.

It was better back when you could totally freak your teacher out simply by running a simple program like that in class after you finished the assignment before anyone else.

I'm using an XFX 6870, two-headed, on my Hackintosh, and didn't have to edit anything. I'm pretty sure hardware acceleration is working, too.

jonhendry··on Source Sans Pro: Adobe’s first open source font family
"What advantage would someone gain over Adobe by selling freely available fonts "by themselves" with no added value?"

The price it sold at. Just like people sell public domain texts, or even chunks of wikipedia as Amazon ebooks, with no added value.

jonhendry··on Seed Accelerators Have Created Nearly 3,500 Jobs
Presumably other potential employers had to hire other people, and their other potential employers had to hire other people, and it bubbles downward. Eventually perhaps some business lost an employee who took a better paying position, and wound up hiring an unemployed person.
