jongraehl··on A faster way to compute edit distance does not exist
I don't know about the mathematical result (the conditional proof), but I do know that it's easy to expand or limit the edit operations, or change their costs, while keeping the dynamic program order the same (so not e.g. allowing 'move this whole phrase' type edits - that would probably be cubic or worse). If you're considering the generalized 'set any costs you like for the operations' problem then you could set the subst cost as 2 and the insert and delete as 1.

Again, I know that's not precisely what you asked. I can't think of a reduction from "insert+delete only" problems to "insert+delete+subst" (all operations cost 1) problems (where solving the latter gives you a solution to the former, and the size is no more than k times the original).

The name "Wagner-Fischer" is new to me. I usually cite this as Levenshtein [1965]. Even the Wagner-Fischer wp page notes that Levenshtein was first by a long shot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagner%E2%80%93Fischer_algorit...
jongraehl··on Oracle’s license agreement as it pertains to reverse engineering
We've just been Oraclesplained.
jongraehl··on Coca-Cola Funds Scientists Who Shift Blame for Obesity Away from Bad Diets
This would be (barring outright fraud) nearly harmless if we had preregistration as a prerequisite for studies 'counting' (in meta-analyses, in discussions here, in academic rankings, etc) http://theness.com/neurologicablog/index.php/registering-stu...

I suppose they could still add ridiculous interpretations (as is often the case when people's livelihood depends on their work being seen to promote a given side), but at least you could trust the data.

jongraehl··on Classical music generation with recurrent neural networks
just awful. david cope has for years been computer-generating in-the-style-of (learning from scores) music that's actually decent (unless he's hoaxing us and just writing it himself). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PczDLl92vlc
jongraehl··on Index Funds May Work a Little Too Well
Does it help to have a brokerage that has only 401k rollover IRAs and another brokerage that's used for backdoor roth? (I'm guessing not). I've been postponing a 401k rollover for the reason you state.
jongraehl··on Airbnb, My $1B Lesson
Some grist for Silicon Valley (Mike Judge's show):

> On a tactical level, I repeat this creative destruction almost weekly as I analyze an individual deal; on an operational level I do it every few months (re-evaluating my deal flow, co-investor network, deal structures, etc.); at a strategic level I sit down almost every year and question my overall philosophy on founders, theses, markets, etc.

[shorter: I don't only regret my mistakes but also try to learn from them.]

Otherwise a well-told story. Thanks.

jongraehl··on Descendants of Holocaust Survivors Have Altered Stress Hormones
Dying vs. merely damaged is a red herring. Interesting fact re: 9 yo => making eggs/sperm - good comment overall. "Effect wouldn't be as strong" why?

Re: 'regardless of age': you can't rule out genes that influence near-starvation thrive/fail differentially at young vs teen ages. Nevertheless I agree that this is suggestive evidence for "it's not just regular genetics". Good analysis if it indeed applies to this case!

jongraehl··on Descendants of Holocaust Survivors Have Altered Stress Hormones
Methylation is super interesting, but I prefer to keep a broad focus on "what differences in the prenatal/postnatal environment?" for explaining most generation-spanning environmental effects.
jongraehl··on Descendants of Holocaust Survivors Have Altered Stress Hormones
Fascinating. Also entirely consistent with genetic determinism by the usual natural selection story - 9 year olds who survive starvation have bad-ass genes, etc.
jongraehl··on Google Self-Driving Car Project Monthly Report [pdf]
I think Google can do better than just "not at fault". Many of us have avoided (chain reaction or other) accidents by evading a would-be rear-ender (although this can backfire in that if you use up your cushion you may then be pushed into the obstacle ahead in addition to being hit from behind). Also, there are times where overly cautious braking causes chain reactions and collisions (at least, an extremely competent+cautious friend of mine told me he caused one once - maybe it's rare).

Similarly, although we might do better to choose a world with different incentives (like one where 1/3 or more of cars are rigid rule-entitled automata), many of us have (selfish-rationally) made room for incompetent lane changers even if it means violating lane rules ourselves.

jongraehl··on This Industry is Fucked
1. condolences for some horrifying abuse (please report to cops/FBI/etc) 2. "this industry?" understandable feeling but really a wild accusation that's part of a larger media craze. why shouldn't we analyze the horrifying behavior described in terms of public figures and celebrity in general? what is it about tech in particular? 3. conditional on "this industry" being worse than others, are the causes of abuse toward women who are public figures different from abuse toward men who are the same - relevant as we try to fix what is broken in particular about "this industry" to reduce unexpectedly high abuse toward women and/or men.
jongraehl··on HN Office Hours with Kevin and Sam
1. what kind of binding promise can someone make to vote?

2. presumably only those who registered an intent to vote (in the election) for your proxy candidate will be able to direct (with website-votes) that proxy. have you thought about what legal measures can be taken to ensure that someone voted (probably it's not legal to determine who they voted for)?

jongraehl··on DoJ's Gag Order on Reason Has Been Lifted
Since there's no real reason to break this promise, I'm guessing it's a symptom of speechwriter/teleprompter politics.

I guess you can't expect that most of the words from a politician even made an impression as he orated them from the scroll/earpiece, less that they'll be remembered, less that they reflected any authentic intent or belief.

jongraehl··on Going undercover as a sex worker
While we do know that there are more people acting in repulsive fashion w/ relative impunity in some foreign cultures, there's likely a cowed majority who are at least telling their sons not to buy sex from human slavers. Re: your moral philosophy I don't mind people thinking in such absolute axiomatic terms as long as their conclusions+actions are agreeable.
jongraehl··on Policing, Mass Imprisonment, and the Failure of American Lawyers
Most of the prison stabbings are included in violent crimes stats. I guess some rapes may not be, though. Rape in prisons is surpassing non-prison rape (which is almost nonexistent) but it's not routine either - 10x higher rate per person-year is still a pretty low rate (needless to say: we the public should be willing to pay a pretty high price to stop a single violent rape - say, $50k)
jongraehl··on Policing, Mass Imprisonment, and the Failure of American Lawyers
I don't think that's the main cause (for-profit jails and police/prison-unions are surely primary), but the argument does work - incarceration costs the public far more than it could save in suppressed wages, but the companies that benefit don't care about that.
jongraehl··on The male suicides: how social perfectionism kills
Perhaps men access certain modes of physical violence (guns?) more easily, but how are the psychological states of murder and suicide related at all? I understand amok/revenge murder-suicides but most suicides aren't that. "Violent crime" doesn't seem like a useful way to carve up reality here.

jongraehl··on The male suicides: how social perfectionism kills
So long as the 'stoic' lack of words isn't an obvious-to-all sullen pout, I can't think of a reason anyone would react negatively to someone who fronts satisfaction in a group setting. Rather, it's over-sharing and over-complaining that will repulse (except in the mutual dance of [platonic or otherwise] intimacy+trust).
jongraehl··on Please stop calling databases CP or AP
The article presents a really dumb argument: that because CAP only proves it's impossible to have CP and AP for a single record, and we care about more than one record, we shouldn't use the CAP impossibility result.

> The CAP system model is a single, read-write register – that’s all. For example, the CAP theorem says nothing about transactions that touch multiple objects: they are simply out of scope of the theorem, unless you can somehow reduce them down to a single register. [WHICH YOU CAN. DUH. SINGLE-REGISTER IMPOSSIBILITY OF CONSISTENCY APPLIES TO ALL N>=1]

jongraehl··on Fundraising While Female
Whatever disfunction exists in VC (I'm sure some does) is an opportunity for funders who specialize in funding women. They should obtain better deals than those who are for whatever reason only capable of correctly judging and interacting with male founders, especially if they can develop a reputation for it.

Best wishes to the founder here, who took positive action by starting a business that seems promising enough (I agree with the premise that there are still opportunities in online dating). I'm not a fan of scolds with no skin in the game and outrageists who make every 3rd anecdote into a 'trend', but relating true experiences is surely good.

Interpretations of social-psych-science studies (as opposed to the actual [reproduced] experiments) should be taken w/ huge lumps of salt.

jongraehl··on Android’s 10 Millisecond Problem explained
Compare to a nice grand piano: 1 meter of air ~3ms. (hammer travel after you bottom out the key - another 10ms? A MIDI keyboard doesn't know the velocity of the note (or send the note at all) until key travel is mostly done too.)

I have only 5 ms of ASIO buffering using my PC but I don't actually know how much actual key->sound latency; I do know that using headphones it's only slightly less immediate than a nice grand.

I think the low MIDI bit rate (31kbaud) also adds a little latency on chords.

It would be nice if keyboards in the future immediately sent a lower latency+precision keypress-initiated notice (before full key travel) so disk-based samplers can make ready for that note (and make any initial attack sound that's appropriate).

jongraehl··on No Longer an Inspiration
And internet and computers whenever they want! (I'm being sarcastic here; not sure 'bout parent err4nt)
jongraehl··on A Grand Juror Speaks: The inside story of how prosecutors always get their way
Interesting story but nothing seems exactly wrong with any of it. Is it the case that prosecutors mostly make reasonable indictments because of the potential embarrassment of having a grand jury naysay them, or should we just scrap the grand juries because prosecutors will anyway only bring supported charges? As a small optimization I'd suggest using a single judge or a smaller number (5?) of jurors for the same purpose.
jongraehl··on Ellen Pao Loses Silicon Valley Bias Case Against Kleiner Perkins
> ... the freewheeling ways of the male-dominated technology industry increasingly drew scrutiny.

> Episodes of men behaving badly make the news frequently here, whether it is sexism or harassment in the workplace or just derogatory attitudes toward women.

So the story in the NYT is that it's a story in the NYT (unless by "here" the author means tech or SV? Either way, Narrative is a juggernaut. The thinking and the story becomes more founded in what people are saying than what is.)

jongraehl··on Interviewing for a JavaScript Job
That's nice (and can be easily fixed to handle negative coordinates), but extremely slow (imagine a simple square cycle with side length N. Her solution takes N^2 steps.
jongraehl··on Browser Vulnerability to Superfish: A Fact-Finding Trip to Best Buy [pdf]
The purpose of a publicized hash is that you can produce the content later and assert that you had authored it prior to the time you publicized the hash. This is proof to the extent that generating text to hit a given hash is really hard.
jongraehl··on The Lost Art of C Structure Packing
I guess we're probably ok with the Y2118 cvs-export bug.
jongraehl··on A female computer science major at Stanford: “Floored” by the sexism
For a typical high-achieving man (in other words, a narcissist) to make it through a program where he's even slightly outside the social mode without a persecution complex, he'd have to possess extraordinary emotional poise. And we've seen that fine analytical minds are at least as prone to biases (system 2 reasoning is the rationalizing one, not the automatic system 1).

So, this woman's reaction is not to her discredit. Almost any person would have it. What's maybe a little sad is how much play such "dear diary" reactions get. I guess people really love a good shouting match (see the many flagkilled comments).

Those capable folks who enter a field out of genuine desire and with no obstacle other than a (real) feeling of social friction will stick with it and prevail. Good luck, outsiders. Anyway, ridiculous feelings of persecution (e.g., they think they're better than me with their college degrees - I'll show them all!) can be harnessed for productivity, so if you can't zen away your angst, use it.
