So much conversation like this, it's crazy. Here's the simple truth. Apple makes phones. The best phones you can buy. Nearly every person over the age of 13 buys a phone. Many buy a new one every year or two. Apple controls approx. 12% of the overall market and approx 91% of profits. That's it. Compare this with the PC-market of the early 90s (10 years into a market segment). Apple is CRUSHING it's closest competitor (Sammy). Their phones are literally BLOWING UP. Take a flight recently? "No Samsung Galaxy S7s allowed". Sheesh. Apple and Tim Cook can piss into the wind for the next decade so long as the iPhone engine continues. And it WILL CONTINUE. It's getting better every 12 months.
jondiggsit··on Luxury Home Mainstays May Be Gone in 20 Years
I agree with the trend in home theaters. While a few of my recent projects had traditional "movie theater" designs, the trend is moving towards a more casual setup.

The living rooms, family rooms, master bedrooms all have the same sophisticated surround sound, high quality large LED screens, etc. It's harder now to justify the space and expense of a dedicated theater. I like the idea of a VR-room. Maybe multi-directional moving floor, padded walls, wind simulation, surround sound etc... Now that would make for an interesting home talking point.

As far as kitchens go, the trend I see is this: "Showroom kitchen" with large eat-in breakfast area and family room in one. An auxiliary kitchen connected to this either thru service doors or connected by dumbwaiter in the basement. So people can hang in the kitchen, eat appetizers, open the fridge, open a bottle of wine, etc.. while the heavy cooking prep is done in the service kitchen.

The idea about an "appliance garage"... I don't know... No one is hunting around looking for some appliance they use once in a blue moon. People are always going to have counter-top coffee machines, etc, just sitting on the counters.

As far as master-suites go... The advent of the internet is making people more creative and specific about what they want. What I'm building are really that, suites, like what you would experience in a high-end hotel. Double door entrance with a small anti-foyer, a small study room/area, double door entrances to the master bath and master closets. Sometimes the baths are split into his and her, as well as the closets. The big addition I've been doing lately are adding small, concealed bar areas. Mini-fridge, sink, coffee-maker... who wouldn't want that? Wake up on the weekend, have a steam and a shower, make a cup of coffee and sit out on a private balcony before ever leaving your room.

What's the point of making that statement? 'Cotton production requires a fraction of the number of employees needed to accomplish the same tasks 150 years ago.'

The bottom line is this: It's an advanced economy sector industry creating jobs in the US, where none existed before. Not in spite of, but because it's a highly automated factory, it can be built in the US. The more "great American" companies that build advanced factories, the better for the US economy.

Frankly, I'm most impressed that this project seems to be on schedule. Gives me a little encouragement that we can execute on mega projects like this.

Lutron RA2 systems are very reliable. I centrally (home-run) wire all of the switches for future upgradeability, but I have very little issue with their systems. They can run wirelessly, but if its new construction, must also wire.

Unless the application is a Star Wars level system, I recommend RA2, otherwise Lutron Homeworks can be your best friend.

Definitely need to protect the processors/servers on a location by location basis from voltage surges. The switches and outlets will be fine.

Serious question: How much would I have to pay you to consult on a new, high-end residential project? It's a 12,000 sq. ft. single-family residence.
jondiggsit··on Why I Regret Making My House a Smart-House (2013)
This is the only way to build these systems. If you are building a new house, wire everything to a central location. This way, any necessary upgrades can all be a matter of swapping out hardware.

Even with the switching, if Lutron goes out of style, atleast all of the switch-legs are run to a central location. The entire system could be replaced (and the devices). It would not be cheap, but at least it's possible. Replacing devices in the wall isn't the worst thing in the world.

The issue with the generator could have been as simple as the Generac smart switch not properly managing the load requirements of the panel.
jondiggsit··on Why I Regret Making My House a Smart-House (2013)
The big issue of this story is this: NEVER INSTALL CONTROL4. It's utter garbaged. I hate to say it, really hate to say it, but if you want this level of integration in a system the only option is Crestron. I was hoping for a while that Savant would be a great option, but I fear they are backing away from the "PRO"-level integration now.
jondiggsit··on Why I Regret Making My House a Smart-House (2013)
This is one of the biggest issues. If you do not have a smart builder advising you on every step of the process, you will eventually take horrible advise from a salesman and end up screwing yourself.

Nothing wrong with "smart" lighting systems (Lutron). These lighting systems are essential for large homes. Just need to be installed properly.

jondiggsit··on Why I Regret Making My House a Smart-House (2013)
The system installed sounds like a Lutron RA2 system. These systems can work wirelessly, but if it's new construction, you're a fool not to hardwire it was well (THE WALLS ARE OPEN).
jondiggsit··on Why I Regret Making My House a Smart-House (2013)
These are good alternatives until you are building a large house, where you have, say 300 switch legs, 90 dimmers, 75 keypads, etc. You start to realize Lutron is your friend.

If you haven't noticed, people are more wild just before a full moon. Always a good idea to plan parties the night before.

This is just my observation but I've found it to be very helpful in social situations. I could, from an empirical pov, understand this to be true in trading as well.

I, for one, would rather be building on sand rather than clay. Clay is an absolutely terrible substrate for construction. Not to mention it does not drain. Hills don't become saturated with water... the water tends to flow to ze bottom of ze hill, where it will saturate things. I'd be curious to know what exactly you are draining into... drywells and clay are not friends.
