jonaswouters··on The age of average
> It's natural to feel that way sometimes, but the perception that everything and everyone looks the same is likely more a result of the ubiquity of certain trends and designs, rather than an actual lack of diversity. We live in a globalized world where information, ideas, and styles are shared quickly and easily, leading to the widespread adoption of popular trends. This can create a sense of uniformity in various aspects of life, from architecture to fashion.

> However, it is important to remember that despite the prevalence of certain trends, there is still a great deal of diversity in the world. This diversity can be seen in regional variations of architecture, local customs and traditions, and the unique personalities and experiences of individuals.

> It's also worth considering the role of technology and social media in shaping our perception of the world. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest tend to promote a curated, idealized version of reality, often featuring similar aesthetic styles. This can contribute to the feeling that everything looks the same, even if that's not the case in reality.

> To better appreciate the diversity that does exist, try to explore different cultures, visit local events, or engage in conversations with people from different backgrounds. By actively seeking out and appreciating the variety that exists in the world, you may find that your perception of "average" begins to change.

jonaswouters··on Little Snitch Mini
I hope they migrate some of the design from mini to the normal version. The mini version looks good with better use of space.
jonaswouters··on MacBook Air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason
There is at least one report in this HN thread, and some in the forum. 16" is less popular, so fewer reports, I guess.

I'm somewhat afraid for it because there is no AppleCare+ in our country, and I had to pay up to 700 euro for the keyboard problems in the last model before they replaced it for free.

jonaswouters··on Ask HN: How often do you make a fresh OS install?
I reinstall every time I feel there is too much bloat on my machine. At least 2 times a year.

I have everything I need in an installation script (a seperate script for NixOS, Windows & Mac) that I just need to run after reinstall to get up and running. Big changes I make on the system are added to the script.

jonaswouters··on Ask HN: Advanced Linux users, which distribution do you run? Why?
These days I prefer NixOS, but I use ubuntu most of the time for VMs.

NixOS requires a high initial investment, but is so reliable and convenient afterwards. Installing multiple versions of software for development is convenient without having to use third party tools.

Sure it has downsides especially if you use weird or old software that is not available in the repository, but nothing an ubuntu vm or docker cannot solve.

Over the past 20 years: Suse -> LFS -> Gentoo -> Arch -> NixOS As you can see, I like to make it difficult for myself, but you learn the most this way.

jonaswouters··on No CS Degree – Interviews with self-taught developers
This is the best answer I've seen.

Not going to school gives you more freedom to explore your interests and choose a unique, idiosyncratic path. If you are driven and focused, you can get farther down a road than most others will because you have the freedom to focus on areas where you are passionate.

This is me, but I know this is not for everyone. I would advise going to school to make it easier in the long run. Passion for your work and the focus to pursue it is very important to get somewhere.

If school worked like it does today, 20 years ago, then maybe I could've finished it.

jonaswouters··on Ask HN: Best office chair for home office work?
I had a 1500 euro chair that I hated. I replaced it with a 200 euro chair from Ikea that I now use the most.

What is important to me is variation. I have a swopper, a light stool, an Ikea chair, a walking treadmill and sit/standing desk. The expensive "ergonomic" chairs don't work for me.

jonaswouters··on Ask HN: How do you find time to learn new skills having family?
For me, it was not lacking time, but lack of energy.

After the first one, it took 3 years before I had enough energy to pick up side projects again, and then the 2nd one came and we were even more exhausted.

Now 3 years later (6 years total) I'm finally starting a side project again.

Scheduling kind of works, but when you don't have the energy to do something that you scheduled, it still doesn't work.

My hobbies have changed over the last 6 years. I picked up BMX racing with our oldest, D&D/ttrpgs with new friends and reading sci-fi/fantasy instead of watching tv and playing games (you can pause it anytime).

My new side project relates to one of my hobbies (lfg site for ttrpgs).

Being picky is necessary and having "meaningless" downtime to find your focus is more important than stressing out and trying to do everything and nothing.

jonaswouters··on Electric cars: New vehicles to emit noise to aid safety
here is a DIY video with 2 more gentle sound options. It should be standard in cars imho. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv8wqnk_TsA
jonaswouters··on The new Dropbox
Backup and Sync is not so great. I wish the Photos backup client was still available, and I'd use that together with InSync.

InSync is great and works on most platforms. I've been using it since dropbox lost a bunch of my important files in 2014. (I have multiple backups now)

jonaswouters··on Apple’s Latest Macs Have a Serious Audio Glitching Bug
I had a 2017 MBP and the USB speakers I had caused issues. I sold them thinking it was an issue with the speakers, but the next set of USB speakers had the same problem. Eventually, I just used AUX to connect them.
jonaswouters··on Ask HN: Show Us Your Personal Website/Blog?
https://jonaswouters.com

Personal blog that I usually don’t promote because it’s about myself and some of my reasoning. Older posts are not even valid anymore and I will revisit them when I feel like it.

It’s about writing more and reflecting on my decisions and experiences.

I recently moved from a static website to write.as because I want to focus on the content. Something broke in my pipeline and as a result I didn’t post updates for years.

At some point I want to make http://jw.be an entry point to my blogs and businesses. It’s pointing to my company website for now.

jonaswouters··on Office Space turns 20: How the film changed the way we work
The physical phone thing is also my best experience while working remotely. Like you said we would call each other up and leave the line open for hours. We never used a camera, but I went to the office at least once every other week.

I still miss the phone on my desk, and I've been considering to buy one for years, as a gate with an asterisk multiple choice menu in between :)

jonaswouters··on Ask HN: What makes you not want to work with a developer?
Very relatable.

I laughed with number 5 because I'm a leg shaker, but I can't break that habit. Those things are minor and maybe not even something to complain about.

For the other cases, like 2. It's hard to deal with people like that, even after reading "Dealing with people you can't stand" which helped, but it is yet another effort you have to make yourself with unpredictable results.

jonaswouters··on Best Display for Programming? (2017)
I'd love to see that. Care to share a photo?
jonaswouters··on So Long, Macbook. Hello Again, Linux
Almost the same story, with some different dates, but I ditched my macs and am fully on NixOS.

I loved OSX and the stylish apps, but I noticed I was only using IntelliJ, iTerm and the browser most of the time. r/unixporn made me wishing Linux was a better fit for me, but I could not miss apps from Adobe or Affinity.

This was solved by setting up a vfio configuration, and now even the fanciest games run smoothly in my VM.

I still use an iPhone and iPad, but they are mostly for consumption, note taking and drawing.

jonaswouters··on Fish shell 3.0
I never got nvm working for me, so after a few years on fish, I switched back to ZSH just for nvm. Any tips on how to get it working?

I think it had to do bass not working though, so the plugin didn't work. Now that I'm on NixOS I might give it another shot.

jonaswouters··on Ask HN: What happened to Pinboard?
I liked that one the most, but development seems to have come to a halt. I've seen complaints about payment renewals etc so I'm not taking the risk.

It does seem like browser bookmarks is the safest bet.

jonaswouters··on Ask HN: What happened to Pinboard?
I loved your service when it was released. It does need a little modernization and I'm looking forward to when you get there!

The feature I miss most from pinboard is tag suggestions in the extension/bookmarklet, and perhaps a little popup that gives you a chance to change the title/description.

jonaswouters··on Ask HN: What happened to Pinboard?
I've been evaluating different services and for now, I'm liking https://larder.io/

It's not perfect, and no archiving yet, but it's in active development

jonaswouters··on What Is The Morning Writing Effect?
If only my kids would sleep to 7 am every day... Our youngest (2y) is awake between 5-6am every day. Both go to bed between 7-8pm. Not much time before and after unfortunately.
jonaswouters··on Taking PHP Seriously
I can agree that php might not be the nicest or the fastest language, and I like to say choose the right tool for the job, but writing it off just because it's php is stupid.

A couple of months back there was this php sucks article about being looked down upon because you do php for a living. Php is the language people bitch about to feel better about themselves. Even within the php community symfony developers don't take drupal developers seriously. It's sad really and even I'm guilty of doing that. A little more respect for your fellow developers is all we need. It's like judging a book by it's cover. How would you feel if <insert your fav lang> was treated that way.

Php has a lot going for it. The community is very active and passionate, new things come out at a rate you can keep up with. You can easily get passionate about it if you engage in it. A lot of interesting projects are (being) build with it and it is obvious that php won't disappear anytime soon.

If you have to work with php and bitch about it, make the effort and solve the problem you have with it. Contribute back to the community and experience the gratitude. You'll enjoy your work more.

So there are php people that care and they try to make the best of it. I don't think they consider it to be a garbage language. They are the ones that made php what it is today which is something totally different compared to what it was years ago.

jonaswouters··on PHP 7 deployment at Dailymotion
If you jump on a new language early enough and are proficient enough to be productive in it, you have a chance to actually land some jobs with it without having to take a pay cut. Letting people know and engaging in the community is a requirement though.

You'll meet other people passionate about it and ultimately network is everything ;)

Then again I end up with php jobs anyway because I enjoy sharing my knowledge (coaching, improving way of working, etc) but at the same time surround myself with people who I can learn from. (Be it business, architecture or a different language, all relative knowledge is valuable)

jonaswouters··on Zend Framework 3 Released
The components are now no longer or less intertwined with others and are therefor more easily used by other projects. Basically like the symfony components are used everywhere.

A little competition or alternatives is always good.

jonaswouters··on Arq 5: Massively faster backup and restore for Mac and Windows
Is this also the case for crashplan business or PROe? (ceejay in europe).
jonaswouters··on Ask HN: Programmers with kids – did it make you a "bad" employee?
There is some difference in mentality between dads. Especially "work is just work"-father and actually caring about your career. Caring about your career doesn't make you a bad father.

I've always preferred to be with my SO instead of participating in "out of office hours"-time with colleagues. I guess I was a worse fit for a company since I fell in love.

jonaswouters··on Ask HN: Hiring remote and international
It's easier when most of the employees are remote. If you've got an office where most of the action happens, the remote employees might start feeling like outsiders. I think that is one of the hardest things to overcome.
