jonaphin··on Actual OIS performance: Lumia 920 against iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, HTC One X
Thank you for clarifying :)
jonaphin··on Actual OIS performance: Lumia 920 against iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, HTC One X
Not to give in to conspiracies of any sort, but these videos prove nothing.

1. Why are the zoom levels different?

2. I'm certain the HTC One X can shoot more decent videos than what we saw.

3. Are we dealing with equivalent bitrates?

4. Isn't Image Stabilization a post-processing solved problem? I mean, it's great to have it in real-time (after a google search, it seems all three do have the feature), but there's nothing wrong with post-processing when you REALLY care about the final quality of your work.

jonaphin··on IOS6 security vulnerability in 2 seconds
Wow, just tried.

Steps:

- Do Not Unlock your phone

- Activate Siri

- Go to Town

This is potentially really dangerous. Now I'm wondering if apps themselves should actually be responsible for granting permissions when the phone is locked.

jonaphin··on Shocked by San Francisco, on my very first day
If it can help, no.

I certainly do see your point though.

jonaphin··on Guy Kawasaki on why he gave up on iOS
Guy Kawasaki, Evangelist by profession. Nuff said.
jonaphin··on Not Yet A Hacker
Good technic, there is a quote somewhere that sums up your strategy, which goes something like:

"As long as you do not speak, the word is prisoner of your mouth, once spoken, you are prisoner of your word"

Wise nthnclrk is wise :)

jonaphin··on Google forgets about usability with latest Chrome build
Are we talking about Chrome beta? I'm up-to-date on OSX and do not see the "Hot Dog" button replacing the wrench.
jonaphin··on Not Yet A Hacker
Friend, my best advice is: Do it. Don't write about being "about" ready to get there. Be there, and show us.

Cheesy plug: YES, you can!

Piece of advice: Have a goal in mind, and plow through!

jonaphin··on The Soul of a Typeface
It's moments like these that I feel small in regards to humanities. Thank you, Sir.
jonaphin··on What Linux Could learn from Apple?
I have to somewhat disagree with "OSX focuses on developers" and nuance it with "OSX will pull the rug from under the developers' feet when it feels like it" (Carbon 64-bit anyone?)

With that said, I have nothing to say against this. Apple, by alienating both users & developers in specific cases, does bring the whole ecosystem forward.

My take is OSX focuses on innovation, leading the way forward, leaving behind both developers and/or users that are slow to keep up. In the big scheme of things, it has been a big win for Apple.

jonaphin··on Why Miguel de Icaza is Wrong About Desktop Linux
My take: "The Desktop will die WAY before Linux dies". Nuff said.
jonaphin··on A virus that kills cancer: the cure that's waiting in the cold
I love the idea of a kickstarter!

I'm just wondering what "direct" reward can be given in exchange for a donation. While most of us see the benefit of such a drug to the "human race" I really think the success of kickstarter is due to its premise that your donation is reciprocated by the recipient.

With that said, wow, this drug 'sounds' extremely promising, and I hope to everything holy that it can do the miracles it advertises.

jonaphin··on Kindle edition of Effective Programming by Jeff Atwood (Coding Horror) for $0.00
Oh my, did I not say thank you!?

Thank you for the link! I love Jeff Atwood! CodingHorror.com's RSS is one of my favorite Google Reader Feeds

jonaphin··on Why you should continue working on your bad idea
I guess the nuance he brings is that working on your bad idea hard enough can lead you to "pivot" towards a better idea.

The other implied argument is that focusing your efforts on ONE project is often the key to success.

How many of us are project A.D.D.? ...as I love to call it

jonaphin··on Kindle edition of Effective Programming by Jeff Atwood (Coding Horror) for $0.00
Just in time for the long weekend! :)
jonaphin··on YouTube.app
As you noted duly, there will be a Youtube app for iOS.

You also noted the move might bring ads and other unwanted noise. It will certainly. Someone has to pay for the service.

Now, what will be interested to see is how many people switch to Android because of it. My guess, close to 0.

Of all the videos I watch online from major sources, I have to give it to Google, their ads are the least annoying (possibility to minimize them or quit the video ads after 5 seconds).

jonaphin··on Driverless cars promise to reduce accidents, revolutionise transport
I love the idea of driverless cars; it is nevertheless important to note that hacking might replace drunk driving as the #1 cause of deaths on the road.
jonaphin··on In wich I rant about developing on Android
OP, your piece begs the question: "What are you going to do about it?"
jonaphin··on HBO No Go
After many trials and tribulations (Apple TV + Airplay, Roku 2, PS3) the ONLY decent (read working) option was XBox 360 + XBox Live Gold + Comcast XFinity* + HBO Go App.

It does feel like I lost my soul signing packs with so many devils, but at long last, I have an HD HBO Go app running the way it ought to.

* Not all cable companies have a deal with HBO for HBO Go

jonaphin··on Why Flash failed on Android, and what it means for Adobe
Very nice article.

Just a remark (which does not disagree with anything you've said):

Flash has not failed. The Flash Mobile Web Player has.

jonaphin··on Bowtie for Knockout: Untangle your Spaghetti-Like KO Bindings
Wow, this could prove to be invaluable, can't wait to try it!
jonaphin··on Suicide Linux: Where typos do rm -rf /
Haha, a bit too hardcore, but I'm sure some of us will appreciate :)

On the topic: Short of a more elegant solution, Trash-cli or some similar tool should be a default alias for rm in distros, in my opinion.

jonaphin··on Flash Player exits Android
Adobe took the pragmatic approach. The HTML standard is maturing to the point where Flash will become redundant technology sooner rather than later for regular media consumption. Pulling the cord on Flash Mobile is the right thing to do. Seriously, which relevant company still builds anything for mobile on Flash?
jonaphin··on Google buys Wildfire
You are correct.

jonaphin··on Google buys Wildfire
You forgot Context Optional (acquired by Adobe earlier this year)
jonaphin··on Md5crypt is no longer strong enough
Not exactly an expert on cryptography, but how different is the description of the "next" crypto-algorithm provided by Kemp different from what bcrypt can do today?
jonaphin··on The CS6 Desktop Brand System
In art, evoking emotions from a piece is what matters most. Your opinion on its beauty is but second-rate in the experience.

Had you been indifferent, Adobe would have done a bad job.
