jolan··on Intel's 10nm 'Cannonlake' delayed, replaced by 14nm 'Kaby Lake'
Just seems like they're backing off from publicly committing to a timeline (and probably giving themselves more time to get 10nm right). Which makes a lot of sense given how 14nm went and how long it took to get yields up to acceptable levels.

http://forwardthinking.pcmag.com/none/329835-intel-sees-path...

> Krzanich said the company thinks it signaled too much of its intentions to the industry about its 14nm plans, so "we'll be a bit more prudent in releasing information" about new manufacturing nodes. He wouldn't commit to the company's familiar Tick/Tock cadence of releasing a new process node one year and a new architecture the following year, though Smith said the company expects to be on a "fairly normal cadence" and "will talk about 10 nm in the next 12 or 18 months when appropriate."

They've stated in the past and recently reiterated that they have a clear path to 10nm.

Kind of disappointed that the author neglected to discuss how the $9.34/hr she earned as an Uber driver compares to her salary as a "senior staff writer".

jolan··on Vault – A tool for managing secrets
Hopefully they use setproctitle() to erase it. Pretty sure this is what mysql does:

jolan 4950 0.0 0.0 46164 8820 pts/12 S+ 16:06 0:00 mysql -uroot -px xxxxxxxx

Probably still a race condition and can be viewed before it is erased but at least it would be something.

jolan··on Ask HN: How long until 4k video is mainstream?
H.265 hardware decoding is already cheap. For instance, the $35 odroid-c1 has it.

Between NVIDIA GTX 900 cards out now and the coming support in Intel's Skylake, there will be a nice install base for H.265 by next year.

Unfortunately, there's no hasH265HWAccel property for netflix/youtube to check.

jolan··on DHS to Launch Nationwide License Plate Reader Program
I know people in Illinois used to avoid the toll booth license plate cameras by bending their motorcycle license plates upwards since it only looks for flat rectangles.

Another option would be opt out completely and ride a bike.

jolan··on $149 Chromebooks
These are ARM Chromebooks though so there is no conventional bios to flash.

They have u-boot with support for booting external media turned off so all you need to do is turn that on and make bootable media.

jolan··on It’s Comcastic, Or: I Accidentally Bought a House Without Cable
At least they were honest instead of guessing.

AT&T has a database of the line rate/quality that the last person who had service was able to achieve.

That doesn't mean it's accurate though. Quality can have gone down due to rotted shielding, new sources of interference, etc.

jolan··on It’s Comcastic, Or: I Accidentally Bought a House Without Cable
Yup, I had a similar situation where I bought a house, tech came out, no cable run to the house. Their executive support got everyone to actually do what they said they were going to do. They can be reached directly at we_can_help@cable.comcast.com.

Long version:

There was cable to the utility pole but it wasn't actually active or connected to anything.

Tech said he would escalate to his supervisor and his supervisor would escalate to the construction department and contact us.

We ordered AT&T while waiting to hear back. AT&T install went fine but the router was complete crap for an advanced/technical person, high latency, IPTV steals bandwidth when recording more than 1 HD channel, etc.

I got sick of waiting so I sent a polite email to we_can_help@cable.comcast.com and included a google maps link of where the pedestal was and the utility pole.

I received a response the next day that they would fix it for me.

A couple days later we heard from the construction supervisor that they would be working on it with no charge to us.

A week later, a crew was out running a new line from the pedestal to the utility pole.

A few days later someone came and buried cable from the utility pole to the house.

We waited a few days to see if someone would contact us and they did and said we could proceed with installation.

A tech came and setup everything but the actual line never activated. So the tech filed a service outage ticket and left.

The next morning we had a signal and everything was working.

So ~2 weeks of no Internet, ~4 weeks of subpar AT&T U-Verse later, had a decent connection with no complaints.

jolan··on Silicon Valley doesn't create jobs; it's wiping out middle-class jobs
This article is written from the perspective that everyone is guaranteed a place at the table of the hyper-efficient capitalist economy when no such guarantee has ever been made.

If these kids went to college, then surely they learned how to learn, so why not adapt to the market by learning new skills that the market values more? Better than sitting on your ass waiting for the market to adapt to you.

Or join the military, file for disability, or get a second crappy job since your free time is likely spent watching netflix and playing games.

As alluded to in the article, even the low skill, low paying jobs will be going away soon so the time to act is now.

jolan··on Intel Rolls 14nm Broadwell in Vegas
From AnandTech's coverage (http://anandtech.com/show/8814/intel-releases-broadwell-u-ne...):

Support for HEVC is also present in terms of a combined (hybrid) hardware and software solution, just as it was on Core-M. Intel stated that as parts of the H.264 algorithm are near if not identical to those of the H.265, with a small tweak to the hardware it can be used for both. This is still not an all-encompassing hardware acceleration, but it does aim at some parts of the codec. I would speculate that if a full section of the silicon could be made for complete hardware acceleration, it might eat into certain power budgets.

jolan··on Launching in 2015: A Certificate Authority to Encrypt the Entire Web
The "How It Works" page (https://letsencrypt.org/howitworks/) says:

- Obtain a browser-trusted certificate and set it up on your web serve

IdenTrust is listed as a sponsor and is the CA for the letsencrypt.org certificate so I'm guessing they're doing some sort of partnership.
