johnydepp··on Firefox Focus – a free, fast and easy to use private browser for iOS
Good to see Mozilla making so much progress lately. Earlier I gave up on Firefox as the Chrome was faster and better, but now its shiny and solid again! Kudos to the team!
johnydepp··on Code I’m Still Ashamed Of
I have seen bad code in my life. Some cases developers don't care about the code ethics OR they are not intelligent/experienced enough to write a good code.

But in many cases its the mistake of product managers or leads. When the product goals/specs are not clear, the design changes very often and you have to meet the tight deadlines. This leads to redundant and inefficient code which is very difficult to clean up and maintain.

johnydepp··on Amazon QuickSight Now Generally Available
I know a few people working on the similar stuff. Old story! Take the idea from new comers and utilize the brand value.
johnydepp··on MacOS Sierra Server
I am sorry for my rants. I admire Apple for so many amazing things they invented.

This frustration is not sudden, it took time to build up. And I share this opinion with many of my colleagues and many other developers. This is similar to what happened to Windows and Microsoft thing which happened to Microsoft.

iOS development has been getting frustrating and Android is improving A LOT. AppStore search algorithm/flow is now so brutal that its getting very difficult for new developers to get a breakthrough.

johnydepp··on MacOS Sierra Server
Considering that Apple doesn't care much about developer's exerience (look at XCode crashes, iOS UI Bugs, shitty UX of itunesconnect portal) I won't engage in any new tool by apple.
johnydepp··on Ahead-of-Time Compilation
That's great! Won't it make the compiled executable platform specific?
johnydepp··on Search Ads
I tend to disagree with you. First off it will decrease app disconverability. Second, many of indie developers depend on the incode from in-app advertisement. Now, after the release of AppStore Ads, the money will go directly to Apple instead of small Indie developers.
johnydepp··on Computer Vision Syndrome
I am not sure if this is the place to show code, but here's a small script which can help you remind about looking away from monitor and follow 20-20 rule (only for MAC-OS):

while : do

  for run in {1..5}
  do
      sleep 1
      tput bel
      echo "Eye Beep"
  done

  sleep 1200
done
johnydepp··on My Most Important C++ Aha Moments (2006)
Coming from C++ and iOS world I would say recent C++ has evolved a lot. And I think its better than Objective-C.
johnydepp··on Monument Valley in Numbers: Year 2
You have a point. But today's world quality and polish matters a lot. Point is before you judge make sure you provided good quality and a polished product. The idea matters a lot but if you don't present it well its good for nothing.
johnydepp··on Monument Valley in Numbers: Year 2
This happens to a lot of people. Keep on doing the good work and someday it will pay off.

One thing to keep in mind is its better to work on one title and keep polishing it than working on multiple shitty things.

johnydepp··on Ill-Advised C++ Rant, Part 2
do you realize this would crash with empty array: #define countof(X) (sizeof(X) / sizeof((X)[0]))
johnydepp··on Why I Write Games in C
The article doesn't say C++ is a bad alternative. Just that he did not use it to avoid complexity.

And yes C and C++ are distinct. But the simple modules can be written in C, but the bigger ones need OOPS, so generally written in C++.

johnydepp··on Why I Write Games in C
I write games as well (Written more than 10 games, though they are not very large at scale) and I write them in C++. Reasons being writing networking code (TCP/UDP) is much easier & efficient in C/C++ than any other language IMHO. And most of the code works across platforms.
johnydepp··on Six years of Go
I tried Goland for two of my personal projects. Initially I thought I will get used to the new syntax, but it never happened. It may have certain performance-edge over other languages but I wouldn't call it a modern language. I find coding in C more fun than Golang..
johnydepp··on A global movement to ban urban billboards
I am living in Bangalore, India. Good to know its already implemented in Chennai. I hope its soon implemented in Bangalore and other cities.
johnydepp··on Paul Grahm: [Do What you love] (2006)
Whenever I have to choose between two paths. I read this. Many hackernews readers may already know it. But for the newcomers it may be useful to bookmark.
johnydepp··on SQLite 3.8.7 is 50% faster than 3.7.17
In india the phrase is: "Continuous movement of rope can make mark on stone, like it makes on the wall of a well".

HINDI: "Rasari aavat javat re, sil par parat nishaan"

johnydepp··on Ask HN: Why So Irrational
Yea, I also think its more about 'feeling of autonomy'. It feels more pleasurable to earn less from our own idea than working on regular job
johnydepp··on Extracting audio from visual information
Try noise cancellation on it. And results may be more clear. I did a project on active noise cancellation using neural networks. It should apply here as well.
johnydepp··on Your best passive income? (2014)
"The dumber the app..." works almost everytime. I launched a conceptually great app which was a complete failure: https://itunes.apple.com/in/app/gravity-byte/id504372023?mt=...

Then launched a card game which is a decent success..

johnydepp··on Your best passive income? (2014)
No! Thats the funny part.. I am putting only IAds..
