johntash··on Bear is now source-available
I vaguely remember seeing bearblog before. While I can't comment much on the actual article, I do want to applaud how simple it looks. It makes me want to migrate away from ghost to bear or hugo or something without javascript/etc.
johntash··on SilverBullet v2 released: open-source, self hosted, programmable notes
Happy to see v2 officially released! I think Silverbullet is the note taking tool that I've used the most outside of org-mode, I'm glad it's still getting some love.
johntash··on How to Fix Your Context
I also see it, Firefox on linux.
johntash··on Writing with LLM is not a shame
> I recently had a colleague send me a link to a ChatGPT conversation instead of responding to me.

I honestly would rather this than my colleague sending me text that is obviously from chatgpt, but not stating it upfront. Or even the "I asked chatgpt and it said this.." along with pasting 10 paragraphs of stuff they didn't even read to confirm it could be relevant.

johntash··on Zig 0.15.1
Thanks for the explanations!

I do really like Go's simplicity which is part of why Zig sounded interesting to me. Rust is definitely more mature though and "feels" more useful from the outside, but that could also just be all of the "I rewrote X in Rust" projects out there.

I'm surprised to see that Zig is closer to C than Rust, and also surprised that rust isn't _more_ like go. I'll probably start with rust just to try something different.

Like another commenter mentioned, I'm probably going to end up making a couple toy projects in both just to try them out. I don't have much of a reason for either of them at work, so it's just for personal projects and knowledge.

johntash··on Zig 0.15.1
Thanks! I probably will end up trying both at least a little bit.

Rust's memory management did sound neat when I was reading about it. Rust is also more mature, so probably more useful for now. I really like Go's simplicity though, which makes Zig sound interesting too.

I also just remembered Nim. I didn't get very far with it, but it also seemed cool.

johntash··on Zig 0.15.1
That's a good point I didn't think of, Zig is more likely to have breaking or at least major changes. I guess it doesn't matter too much for personal stuff, but I probably am less likely to want to go back and update things unless I use them often.

What'd you think of Zig with what you've done so far?

johntash··on Zig 0.15.1
Can anyone sell me on learning Zig vs Rust? Not for work, just some personal projects I thought about doing in Go but decided learning Rust instead might be fun.
johntash··on Vim Macros for Beancount
Fava is great. My only problem is that I was lazy and haven't imported anything for at least 2 years, and now it feels too daunting to try and catch up.
johntash··on Obsidian Bases
Neat. I haven't been using Obsidian for a couple years now, but this will probably get me to give it another try.
johntash··on It seems like the AI crawlers learned how to solve the Anubis challenges
It's not really a DDoS guard though. If someone wants to ddos a server, anubis isn't going to be able to stop the traffic before it gets to the server.

It does help from accidental ddos or just rude scrapers that assume everyone has unlimited bandwidth and money.

johntash··on It seems like the AI crawlers learned how to solve the Anubis challenges
One of my semi-personal websites gets crawled by AI crawlers a ton now. I use Bunny.net for a cdn. $20 used to last me for months of traffic, now it only lasts a week or two at most. It's enough that I'm going to go back to not using a cdn and just let the site suffer some slowness every once in a while.
johntash··on It seems like the AI crawlers learned how to solve the Anubis challenges
I think there was some sort of fake webserver that did something like this already. Basically just linked endlessly to more llm-generated pages of nonsense.
johntash··on Claude Code Output Styles
Have any opinions on Claude Code vs OpenCode or one of the other similar opensource tools? There are almost too many options now to evaluate.
johntash··on Nexus: An Open-Source AI Router for Governance, Control and Observability
OpenRouter isn't open source that I know of, but there are open source things similar like Litellm.
johntash··on Optimizing my sleep around Claude usage limits
> I'm 80% certain that my Dad sunk his sailboat because he fell asleep:

:(

> He's doing great, still sailing.

:D

> That was the third boat he sunk. This was the most famous sinking:

:o

Your comment was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, but I'm glad your dad is doing good!

johntash··on Nexus: An Open-Source AI Router for Governance, Control and Observability
It looks like you're planning on monetizing this (which is totally fine!), do you have any plans on what the enterprise version would do differently?
johntash··on Show HN: Omnara – Run Claude Code from anywhere
If it's a webapp, have the CI pipeline create a temporary env and deploy the branch to it?
johntash··on Show HN: Omnara – Run Claude Code from anywhere
Try mosh and see if it helps you with input lag issues. Iirc it processes or buffers the input locally instead of waiting for the server to respond, so it feels faster.
johntash··on Open SWE: An open-source asynchronous coding agent
Aider and Goose are also open source. Goose is backed by a big company, but Aider isn't and was one of the first (that I know of at least).

johntash··on Show HN: Companies use AI to take your calls. I built AI to make them for you
Any chance of open sourcing this or having a way to self host it?

Isn't this basically what most password managers do? Assuming the website supports totp, 1password can fill out your user/password and otp code.

Captchas are a separate issue though I guess.

johntash··on Zed Debugger
I recently started using Zed and I'm pretty impressed so far. Performance is good. Remote editing via ssh works great and less resource-intensive than vscode.

Trying to daily drive it until I run into something it struggles with.

johntash··on Cursor 1.0
FWIW,you can log in to github copilot with Zed and it will use your copilot subscription instead of needing to pay for api calls.
johntash··on Show HN: My LLM CLI tool can run tools now, from Python code or plugins
> I don't love the whole Cursor-esque model of "trust us we'll make a good prompt and LLM calls for you" (and charge you for it

Huh, I've been wondering why a terminal was advertising everywhere and sponsoring random projects. I didn't realize it's not a completely free thing.

johntash··on I think it's time to give Nix a chance
Are you using NixOS, or are you using Nix + home-manager or something like that to manage your user's stuff?
johntash··on Sleep apnea pill shows striking success in large clinical trial
Do you have a recommendation on where? I think my dentist said the cost was > $3,000 so I never went through with it.
johntash··on Sleep apnea pill shows striking success in large clinical trial
What kind of dental guard did you get? One from an actual dentist, or one of those pre-made ones off of amazon/etc?

I've been wanting to try one from the dentist, but they're pretty pricey.

Congrats! What made you choose Delaware vs the state you live in? (assuming you don't live in Delaware)
johntash··on The Future of MCPs
I don't understand why just using something like openapi specs didn't become the "normal" thing to do. We already have APIs for pretty much everything, why do we need a new protocol that wraps around an existing api?
