johnsmith21006··on Benchmarking CNTK on Keras: Is It Better at Deep Learning Than TensorFlow?
The thing is Tensorflow is racking up stars on Github 5x to CNTK. It has all the momentum and hard to see MS able to slow it down.
johnsmith21006··on Tim Cook Says Apple Is Focusing on an Autonomous Car System
Think investors want the opposite. Apple to get in there and innovate again and do something. No 4k or HDR or VR or AI or 2 in 1s, etc.
johnsmith21006··on Tim Cook Says Apple Is Focusing on an Autonomous Car System
I agree and will also say the structure made more sense with Jobs versus without. Not changing the structure after Jobs did not make sense, imo.
johnsmith21006··on Is the x86 Architecture Sustainable?
The biggest threat to x86 is containers. A new unit of work removes the lock in. Then also things like Android and ChromeOS in addition.

The other aspect is cloud providers have the data for the next generation of processors.

johnsmith21006··on Please Make Google AMP Optional
But according to some on here a no AMP response with FF is better as no AMP. Which is it?

Personally prefer the faster speed with AMP.

johnsmith21006··on Please Make Google AMP Optional
Exactly and thanks for pointing out. What matters most is the user and user experience, It is NOT about Google or Apple. Posts like they are the #2 corp or whatever is not relevant.
johnsmith21006··on Please Make Google AMP Optional
It is absolutely true. How can you say otherwise? Business is free to chose.
johnsmith21006··on PAAS Comparison – Dokku vs. Flynn vs. Deis vs. Kubernetes vs. Docker Swarm
You want to invest into what will win including ones own skills. K8 is the winner, IMO. Writing is already on the wall.
johnsmith21006··on Celebrate the web by using another browser than Google’s Chrome
Love Chrome. Tried other options from time to time but always go back. I do run on a higher end machine. It is fast and just rock solid.
johnsmith21006··on Google Brain Residency
That advertising company did create software that beat the best Go player in the world a decade earlier than estimates.

They also created the most power NN processing silicon that uses far less power than anyone else. A pod is doing 11.5 quadrillion FLOPs is pretty impressive. Just sayin.

johnsmith21006··on Amazon reportedly working on proper Android ‘Ice’ smartphones with Google’s apps
Amazon will NOT allow competing products like the Google Home to be sold on Amazon as well as Apple TV and CC yet Google still has the Echo in search. Think you have it wrong and Amazon a problem not Google. I am a big Amazon customer but can still see what it is.
johnsmith21006··on Amazon reportedly working on proper Android ‘Ice’ smartphones with Google’s apps
What? Amazon will NOT allow competing products like the Google Home or CC or Apple TV to be sold on Amazon yet Google has not removed the Echo or Amazon from search. Think you mixed up where the issue is at.
johnsmith21006··on Amazon reportedly working on proper Android ‘Ice’ smartphones with Google’s apps
Yes Google purchased and has not done anything with it or invested into improving.

johnsmith21006··on Ask HN: Books you wish you had read earlier?
The Goal and then the Phoenix project.
johnsmith21006··on Google removes SIMD.js support from Chromium
AlphaGo does not use GPUs but instead the TPUs.

"AlphaGo was powered by TPUs in the matches against Go world champion, Lee Sedol, enabling it to "think" much faster and look farther ahead between moves."

johnsmith21006··on Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit 2.0
Would recommend using Tensorflow instead. TF already has 59k stars in GitHub and is going to be easier to find answers to questions and find tutorials, books, etc. Would say TF is already close to being the canonical ML framework. Think MS was just too late.
johnsmith21006··on Mary Meeker’s 2017 internet trends report [pdf]
Ad blocking is unbeatable? Can you explain? Seems to me ad blocking could be stopped if they wanted to and just not enough.

But in the end if more blocking does not the ones that are not blocked just become more valuable so does not change really anything? I mean advertising is going to continue to grow no matter what.

johnsmith21006··on Mary Meeker’s 2017 internet trends report [pdf]
Would say the exact opposite. This deck is great and like how they focus on how things are changing. One of the most interesting slides was which tech company most trusted with health data.
johnsmith21006··on Is China Outsmarting America in A.I.?
Go is an Asian game. US company, Google, created AI to best player in world. Kind of sounds like the US or Google ahead in the AI space?
johnsmith21006··on AlphaGo's next move
I am constantly amazed what Google shares. They are a company with shareholders to be fair.
johnsmith21006··on Docker on OpenBSD 6.1
Exactly. I read the article more than once as thought i was missing something. This is really not Docker on BSD.
johnsmith21006··on A Year of Google and Apple Maps
Google maps has the lane to use and Apple maps does not and i have a terrible sense of direction so Google maps is really my only viable choice.
johnsmith21006··on Browse Against the Machine
Would stay away from Edge until matures. There has been significant Edge security issues way more frequently than I would be comfortable.
johnsmith21006··on Browse Against the Machine
You must have a different Safari than the one I have. Apple has the resources to make Safari competitive with Chrome but does not even try. For whatever reason Apple is not interested.

The problem is everything today is mobile which means Apple and Google and one is not really trying. This is causing the imbalance, imo.

johnsmith21006··on Chrome Won
Google corporate culture is vastly different than MS during their heyday.
johnsmith21006··on Chrome Won
Disagree on Google doing same as MS. They already could have on multiple fronts and have not. Vastly different corporate cultures.
johnsmith21006··on Chrome Won
Actually people are not taking the default on Windows but instead using MS browser to download and install Chrome.

"Microsoft has lost over 300 million browser users in 2016, mostly to Chrome, tracking site shows"

johnsmith21006··on Chrome Won
> I think a "Chrome only" world like the IE-only world we had years ago is a long way away.

"Microsoft has lost over 300 million browser users in 2016, mostly to Chrome, tracking site shows"

Not going to take very long at this rate. Appears to be accelerating. Personally just use Chrome as for me extremely stable and when tried Edge it was not stable. I do a lot of surfing and often times have a lot of tabs open and can not remember the last time a tab crashed.

johnsmith21006··on Google is transforming public education with low-cost laptops and free apps
Classroom is NOT free for schools.
