johnsmith21006··on Google is paying Apple billions per year to remain on the iPhone
Google is the dominate search because it is just a lot better. That was true over Altavista and true today. Saying anything otherwise is ridiculous.

Heck MS owns PC and down to tiny share with Bing. Look at browsers in 2016 we had 300 million leave and mostly go to Google.

Not true in Mobile. Bing is not very good in comparison to Google. Then with MS down to 6.5% share in the US for all devices it will just get worse.

I suspect Google wants to keep it away from MS more than anything. With Bing down to 2.5% market share they do not have the revs to invest. That is why Bing is so bad compared to Google on mobile.

This is not true and easy to see with Internet usage. See how iOS is flat and Android keeps growing.

Look at what happened when Firefox switched default search. The default search on Firefox is now worth far less than it was before as they lost huge amounts of browser market share.

Bing is down to 2.5% market share , global and all platforms.

Down to 6.5% in the US for all platforms. But is also declining.

Plus Bing having so little share and revs to invest it has really fallen behind Google in particular in Mobile.

johnsmith21006··on Steve Bannon Wants to Change How the Law Treats Google
A guy that is part of a group that drove a car into innocent people and hates anyone that is not a white, hetro male wants to break up Google and FB and it is something actually discussed on HN?

Really?

johnsmith21006··on Why AI and machine learning researchers are beginning to embrace PyTorch
Agree. Everyone I interact with it is all TF. Even my son at University they are using TensorFlow. Hype or simply better at this point does not really matter as it is simply self fulfilling at this point.

Think of it like k8s and Docker as the same.

johnsmith21006··on “Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 will both ditch the headphone jack.”
Do not believe it.
johnsmith21006··on Ask HN: What is your content discovery daily routine?
Google alerts every morning works well for me. Then Reddit and then HN.
johnsmith21006··on Docker vs. Kubernetes vs. Mesos
K8 already won the orchestration battle.
johnsmith21006··on The war between Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple
Actually Chromebooks have already passed the Mac in the US and growing at 38% YoY versus the Mac is flat.

Great contrast to Google deciding to leave China.
johnsmith21006··on Apple’s Silence in China Sets a Dangerous Precedent
Interesting contrast to Google deciding to leave China. Apple has also chosen to use a China gov controlled cloud provider.

johnsmith21006··on How Chrome OS, Termux, YubiKey and Duo Mobile make for great usable security
Yes it is using Crouton.
johnsmith21006··on How Chrome OS, Termux, YubiKey and Duo Mobile make for great usable security
You can get a Acer 14 refurb for under $200 which is a good dev machine using Crouton with ChromeOS. Nothing else is going to be able to touch this. Sounds like you are just not up to date what is now possible with Chromebooks.
johnsmith21006··on Ask HN: Should a solo developer use AWS for his public side project?
Personally would use the Google cloud instead. Faster, cheaper and love working in containers.
johnsmith21006··on How Google Wants to Rewire the Internet
You really do no understand what Google is doing or how it works. The article does a poor job explaining. It is more like a virtual circuit switch network. It enables far less cost in equipment as no need to over provision. But a key feature is it makes latency far more determinate. This was necessary to make Spanner work.
johnsmith21006··on Apple Machine Learning Journal
I would argue the Bitcoin author being secret has created more intrigue and possibly more noterriery. It is believed to be Nick Szabo, btw.

There is also a security issue as thought that he has a lot of bitcoins hidden away.

johnsmith21006··on How Google Wants to Rewire the Internet
YouTube doubled in hours of video watched last year going from 500m to 1 billion hours daily. FB total video is 100m hours. So Google added 5x FB total. Netflix was about 128 million hours daily.

So Google should get to 1 out of 3 pretty quickly.

johnsmith21006··on Apple and Google embody two alternative models of capitalism
But Google is also 22 years younger? Google passed $100b market cap at age 7 and Apple at 29. Google other as in non ad revenues in 2016 at age 18 is greater than all of Apple revenues when they were the same age. Plus Google grew income by 29% last quarter and Apple earnings have declined over the last two years.
johnsmith21006··on Apple and Google embody two alternative models of capitalism
Google broke $100B market cap at seven years old. Apple mail did it at 29 years old. Google never has declined for a single quarter YoY since day 1. Not a single time.

Apple had $2.33 EPS for Q2 2015 and for Q2 2017 reported $1.90 EPS. So declined over the last 2 years.

Google other revenues (non ad) were over $10B for 2016 and growing at 50%. Apple total revenues in 2004 when it was 28 years old were less than just Google other. Just sayin.

Btw, Google holds the record of getting to $100B cap faster than any other. Even accounting for inflation.

johnsmith21006··on I ask 100 information questions to four digital assistants
Google Home with YouTube is amazing. I say play Gwen Bottle and get Gwen Stefanni sing Message in a bottle. Or say play One Love Peas and get Blach Eye Peas ad One Love concert. What are you talking about?
johnsmith21006··on Is it possible to host Facebook on AWS?
What I have heard about Facebook infrastructure it would better with Google cloud than Amazon.
johnsmith21006··on Goodbye Mozilla
Chrome won not because of pure marketing. Chrome is a very good browser is why.
johnsmith21006··on Google’s Flutter = React and Java Swing
Also have a R11 Chromebook and love it. I do use Crouton but been also using GNUroot as does not require developer.

What I love is being able to do cloud development (Linux) on a commercial laptop.

I wish Google would push this harder as a great dev solution. My biggest gripe is small storage on most CBs. Plus no sdcard access from containers on the R11. Also all Android runs in same container.

johnsmith21006··on Sorry, Amazon, but Microsoft Is the World's #1 Cloud Vendor
Microsoft is really getting desperate. Saw similar propaganda recently with Chromebooks. Guess going back to their old MO.
johnsmith21006··on Pros and cons of Amazon acquiring Slack
Seems like a steal for $9B. Would have thought more. This is pretty big. But what does it say Whole Foods and then Slack?

Crazy world and incredible compression in business. The Internet did exact opposite of what thought would happen.

johnsmith21006··on Ask HN: Why TensorFlow instead of Theano for deep learning?
Over 60k stars on github for TF. It won.
