Pretty sure that's the exception. She actually has a Masters degree as well, so I think that line is pretty misleading. $130k is still high for an entry level product manager though I think.
And this is from the iBooks Author homepage: "Available free on the Mac App store, iBooks Author is an amazing new app that allows anyone to create beautiful Multi-Touch textbooks — and just about any other kind of book — for iPad. With galleries, video, interactive diagrams, 3D objects, and more, these books bring content to life in ways the printed page never could."
From iBooks Author, you can export in iBooks, PDF, or text format. The iBooks format is pretty much a well organized version of the epub format. I just exported one, changed the extension to .epub, and loaded it into an ebook reader.
iBooks Author gives teachers the opportunity to create and update their own textbooks, which has been a common desire for teachers. They'll finally be able have their textbooks match the curriculum they have in mind. It might not fix America's education problem, but it's a step in the right direction.
I sympathize with you, but this has less to do with Kobo and more to do with the book publishers. Kobo, Amazon, B&N, and all the other retailers only do what is required from the publishers, and DRM is at the top of the list.
Build something!!! Maybe just a static site or a make your own Posterous or Tumblr theme. This will be a helpful way to apply what you have read. Reading is fine but the best way to learn is to start coding.
I didn't downvote you but I personally never worry about users with JavaScript disabled, and the companies I have worked for don't care either. The number of people without JavaScript is most likely way to low to spend time on an HTML fallback.
This is awesome man. The wife and I just spent 30 minutes scrolling around and added quite a few items to my Favorites. You need to find a way to get an affiliate fee as soon as possible!
The Pinterest-influenced UI is such a great way to explore. I'd much rather browse around on your site than the actual Etsy site anyday. The new items flying in from the left does catch me off guard sometimes and I think the search input and browse dropdown need to be a bit larger but other that, very well done.
I think Pinterest is a game changer because of the physical social interactions it creates outside of the site. My wife has been to multiple Pinterest "parties", where they pick a craft or recipe and make it together. If someone comes over and sees something she created from a Pinterest finding, a conversation starts and all of a sudden, Pinterest has a new user. This physical interaction to me is what makes Pinterest stand out.
IMO, the only way for physical books to exists alongside ebooks is by bundling the ebook with the physical book, similar to movies. It baffles me why publishers haven't already done this, but then again...publishers aren't the brightest people.
100% agreed. My wife is a labor and delivery nurse. I ask her many questions about her job but I have no interest in learning to how give an IV or check for effacement.
If someone you're dating is not interested in learning your programming language, don't hold it against them. Most likely, there are other reasons why they are dating you in the first place.
Have you launched yet? Being in different timezones post-launch can be extremely difficult in my experience. Bugs and new code gets really hard to manage when the co-worker you need to talk to is asleep while you are working.
You have to understand the publishing industry to understand why eBooks fail so terribly in design and typography. Most publishers could care less about the eBook format. They still have this idealistic vision that eBooks will die off. Publishers are truly idiots. I work for a startup in the digital book space and we get so many ePubs that do not meet standards and are formatted incorrectly. We end up having to hack our code to cater to each publisher. Some publishers are better than others but most of them honestly do not care about eBooks.
This would actually be great if I could rent a puppy for an hour for my kids or something. Maybe you should turn this into an AirBnB for pets. I'm sort of kidding, but sort of serious. I bet PETA would love you ;)
That's okay Tam. Like you said, parenthood is not for everyone and I agree with that. And yes, Jeff's chart would imply only a 2% difference. But that 2% doesn't include the child's happiness and well being. When you have a child, you are doing it for you, but more importantly, you are doing it for them. You are giving them the greatest gift -- life. Almost everyone -- children of flawed parents included -- is glad to be alive.
Great post Chad. I work for an SF startup and have been trying to sell my house in Texas for 6 months. It's ridiculously frustrating and stressful. Best of luck on your house selling!
Totally agree here. I prefer startups to ask for projects instead of a resume. For my job (YC startup), I believe my resume design caught their attention, and my side-projects got me an interview.
Great list. I would add that if a resume is required, a well designed resume is important especially if it's a front-end or generalist engineering role. Kick ass startups look through hundreds of resumes, and first impressions are a big deal.
