johnnycab··on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
>So I am rolling with a cracked screen iPhone 6S+ until I can find the motivation to upgrade.

I recently fixed a iPhone 6S+ for a friend, primarily with an aim to retrieve the photos and contacts. It wouldn't switch on, and had a broken screen. I ended up replacing the screen, battery and the charger port+headphone jack flex. It cost less than £40 in parts and some elbow grease; a superb compromise for a phone, which supports iOS 14 albeit it might not receive any future OS updates.

johnnycab··on 5G Just Got Weird
Yes, the 3GPP or ITU standards can make for a dour read. Probably best to look for sources that you find engaging. You can start with something that gives you the basics, and/or just go straight to the vendors ─ who provide a plethora of white papers, case studies, industry insights etc.

johnnycab··on Data Runner Watch Prototype – Modded Casio F91W
It is possible to scavenge the NFC antenna/chip from an Oyster card or indeed any other card, which the author alludes to in their video. There are details floating around on how to do it, by dissolving the card in acetone.

However, the relevant authorities might take a dim view of repurposing the transit card in this manner and probably have certain restrictions in place, to deter people from defacing their property. On another note, the author is using a NTAG213 on the watches sold via the shop and Oyster is Mifare, from what I can remember. There might be issues with response times regarding the proximity to the reader, if you wanted to experiment.

johnnycab··on Headphones are collecting too much personal data (2019)
I felt cheated after falling for the mass hysteria, which lead me to acquire my first set of SR-60. It didn't take very long to realise how uncomfortable they are for longer listening periods, or when the cable turns into a tangled mess, and the special hell, when you have to replace the earpads.

Thanks. I am not looking to jailbreak yet, so I will have to forgo acquiring these stats for now. I have Lirium Lite, which also does not show the internal stats past iOS 10, due to restricted API.

I posted the solution below, which I found a few days ago. The script will work with greasemonkey and tampermonkey, it will provide you with results similar to the ones before the change. If you also use uMatrix, there will be no ads.

johnnycab··on Isabel dos Santos: president's daughter who became Africa's richest woman
>My take was that she seems to have a similar background to a typical Russian oligarch.

This is a fairly accurate assessment, based on the pillaging of resources, borne out of a privileged position. The usual pilfering of other assets such as telecoms, banks, apart from oil and diamonds, there is a litany of dodgy loans, stakes in foreign companies, expensive art collection, super yacht, a sprawling property portfolio and more, as is de-rigueur for anyone looting a country, is also mentioned in the article.

johnnycab··on A new obstacle to landing a job after college: getting approved by AI
It will be hard to predict what will be considered unusable post-brexit. Although, I don't know how an algorithm will be able to adhere to a mish-mash of job requirements laid down by Dom Cummings for running the government, which involves assorted wierdos juxtaposed with data scientists and Y-Combinator alumni. However, if people like Uri Geller keep applying, it will at least keep the HR bods in gravy.

johnnycab··on City Trees: London Has New Artificial Trees That Eat Pollution
It would be extremely hard not to agree with any effort that reduces pollution. However, the article appears to be a fluff/puff piece by lulling it's intended audience into a false sense of security and virtue signalling by putting air pollution on par with veganism. No amount of fake trees are going to make a difference, unless there is at least a discussion about diesel vehicles being one of the root causes. To tackle this problem requires concerted efforts, not least by holding the government to account on the, now failed, Clean Air Bill.

johnnycab··on Ask HN: Is it worth it to move to London as a SWE?
IR35 is being reformed in April 2020. It is not a new law, as I have pointed out to the previous poster. There are no radical changes to: a) either create a new law or b) morph it into creating another law, which is completely unrecognisable from it's current form. Your claim that it is currently ONLY being observed by 'government agencies' is not accurate. Furthermore, your reading of this reform being pushed as some form of incentive is incorrect.

In the interest of providing impartial advice to the author of this thread; it would be extremely wise to seek professional advice before embarking on this route, as the conditions of employment under IR35 are complex and subjective.

johnnycab··on AMD’s third shoe drops at CES 2020: 7nm Zen 2 mobile CPUs
>I don't even remember what CPU do I have. All the romance is gone!

I don't particularly remember feeling romantic about processor naming schemes; I do remember certain processors for being workhorses. However, I would agree that today, one needs to acquire an informed view to discern processor design and performance, variously across different architectures and manufacturers, over a period of time.

johnnycab··on Ask HN: Is it worth it to move to London as a SWE?
>If you plan to undertake any consulting / contracting opportunities have a look at IR35 - it's about to be introduced in April

You seem to have miscalculated the introduction of IR35 by two decades. It came into force in April 2000.

I thought this was a related or a supplementary story for the BBC programme shown across 6 episodes in March-April 2019, titled: Race Across The World. It featured a father-son team bonding over their experiences whilst travelling from London to Singapore on a budget of £2,000, without directly using modern technology or flights to reach their intended destination and competing with other teams.

johnnycab··on You can't just rename your IT Ops team and call it DevOps
The role of SRE was derived at Google. It has an obvious overlap with DevOps, especially where it concerns automation and scaling to reduce waste and eliminate toil. Regardless of the differences or similarities, in the eyes of the c-suite, those insisting upon using 'Sysadmin' as a role, displays intransigence; which will only embolden recruiters to either low ball potentially more experienced candidates or sideline them in favour of those who are more willing to tailor their attitude to fit the new paradigm.
