johnmarcus··on LastPass appears to be holding users' passwords hostage
LastPass has become garbage since it was purchased by LogMeIn (or whatever parent garbage company owns them these days). I can't comprehend why anyone would use them.

I can only personally recommend Bitwarden instead - it's open source and can never decrypt your passwords on prem. Browser plugin, mobile app, enterprise versions, etc. It has it all, and hasn't been a cunt to it's users from day 1.

Also, unlike LastPass, they haven't been hacked multiple times. I can not comprehend why anyone trusts them with their passwords - the company I work for included I'm afraid.

johnmarcus··on Ask HN: Been writing code for 40 years and can't get hired
find what companies still use the languages your most proficient in and apply there directly, whether they have a job posted or not.
johnmarcus··on 37% of the world’s population have still never used the internet
no.
johnmarcus··on 37% of the world’s population have still never used the internet
the lucky ones.
johnmarcus··on Ask HN: How do you manage or avoid meltdowns?
And let's not forget, it also applies to patients as well.
johnmarcus··on Ask HN: I've lost faith in myself as a developer, how do I get it back?
Out of curiosity, why are you still coding as the Chief Technology Officer?

I knew some CTO's that wrote the initial code (ergo, code quality totally sucked), or would write a 1-off extension (where the code quality didn't matter much). Once the company achieved some size (>5 developers) they just didn't do it anymore / it wasn't a quality use of their time.

As they matured, they tended to focus on the data schema and the soa architecture, and less on the bits and bytes of functions and frameworks.

What drives you to keep being the primary coder?

johnmarcus··on Roblox has been down for over 24 hours
I interviewed with their ops team there and turned it down. Just had a bad smell. I think they hire 'SRE' that can write good leet code. The problem with those folks for ops is that they over engineer complex solutions, and then completely forget the simple but very important stuff. I wish them luck in getting it back together.
johnmarcus··on Ask HN: Google removed my site from search results, what can I do?
I think for your software product, you may have underestimated the value of GitHub.io domain. Your post makde it sound like it went from one custom self owned domain to another, that's not the case at all. I would move it back to github.io, and build your other domain over time until they are 1&2 in results (or there abouts)
johnmarcus··on Etcd, or, why modern software makes me sad
I stopped reading at "Kubernetes (or, as the "cool kids" say, k8s) is the worst thing to happen to system administration since systemd.". These are the best tools to happen for system administration in 20 years. Also, etcd is a terrible db. You cant back it up and can easily lose quorum (and all your data) with a network outage.
johnmarcus··on The Future of Online Identity Is Decentralized
Yes, I suppose if we moved to becoming a lawless society fuelled by drug lords....then yes, I can see how the hoops could be worth it.
johnmarcus··on The Future of Online Identity Is Decentralized
Keybase kludge's it together, and yet still, no one seems to care or use it.
johnmarcus··on How Police Secretly Took over a Global Phone Network for Organized Crime
> "You can succeed with a crew of violent, drug addicted idiots whose only reliable characteristic is short term thinking, and who spend half their time in prison if you have product market fit"

My comment stands. And further, drugs don't sell themselves, a lot of good hard work and smarts goes into it. It's unfortunately the only easy avenue for those without an education and steady home life.

johnmarcus··on Craig Federighi confirms Apple Silicon Macs will not support booting other OS
Yes to the first two. Quality decline has been an ongoing issue. With regards to lost sales, there are many professional genres which use software that simply won't run on Macs, architecture is one of them which also has a high crossover with designers. Many use dualboot so they can run the cad software which only runs on windows when the need to.
johnmarcus··on Craig Federighi confirms Apple Silicon Macs will not support booting other OS
Lol, it's not just about data privacy. Right to repair, right to deliver apps without a 30% fee to my business, right to payment method I prefer, like cryptocurrencies. Right to run whatever software/os on hardware I purchased. These rights have already been eroded on iOS apps, you will see it erode further when these platforms are merged.
johnmarcus··on Craig Federighi confirms Apple Silicon Macs will not support booting other OS
This feels like all the same mistakes Apple made the first time they kicked Jobs out. They just don't know how to manage success.
johnmarcus··on Craig Federighi confirms Apple Silicon Macs will not support booting other OS
This is awesome news. Every architect I know uses Macs with dual boot since cad software isn't supported by Macs. Now they won't bother with the MacBook at all. Given how Orwellian Apple has become, I'm excited for their downfall.
johnmarcus··on ‘BlueLeaks’ Exposes Files from Hundreds of Police Departments
If only we funded the police with trillions of dollars, then they could use that funding to update their computer systems. Awe well, guess it comes down to the old saying "you can't have your assault vehicles and system security too"
johnmarcus··on Interview: Apple’s Schiller says position on Hey app is unchanged
Hey should just offer to subscribe, and just make clear there is a 30% Apple tax for paying through Apple, and is cheaper if signed up through the web. Consumers whom want to pay the Apple tax will, those whom would sign up online would still do so. I dont see the big deal here.
johnmarcus··on Ask HN: How do you develop internal motivation?
This, 1000%. Bad sleep hygiene is behind almost every bad mood or behavior I have ever experienced.

Well, I guess I got the first cache bug, it doesn't pick up the comments after the first audio is generated. Still super cool.
johnmarcus··on Show HN: To Listen to Any Page Prefix the URL with Playthis.link
Wowzers, I was literally wanting this just earlier today, for all the reasons you built it. I bet it would be useful for blind people as well, although I know they have other tools. Here's a link to this article itself. Very cool. httpss://playthis.link/84170ea641f64ccc4e25fcc3ecaec030.mp3
johnmarcus··on Tell HN: Interviewed with Triplebyte? Your profile is about to become public
Ooohh, I got lucky. After I evaluated the platform a few months ago I asked for my account to be deleted, something about the whole platform felt off. They don't measure so many of the most important success factors for good engineers.
johnmarcus··on Show HN: Hacker Feud
Worth noting that the demo questions and answers are jokes based on common online arguments, not facts. This is not Jepordy. Think online flame war kinda answers.

The answers to the demo are here: https://github.com/lettier/hacker-feud/blob/master/src/main....

I think the project is neat and the code is clean. It's funny how something so good can frustrate its own audience with a tiny over site.

johnmarcus··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
Repeter. Forward traffic from a custom DNS domain to my localhost via an ssh tunnel.

Pulumi (like Terraform) stands up the t2.micro ec2 instance, configures nginx, and assigns the dns in Route53, and enable letsencrypt for https. Then tear it down when your down with it. I find it's much faster than the sass alternates, like ngrok.

johnmarcus··on Show HN: Lynk – Securely expose local TCP and HTTP services to the web
Interesting. But I hate getting random endpoints, that means I need to keep updating configs. I'd rather use a self hosted solution, there are some easy ones out there.
johnmarcus··on Amazon scooped up data from its own sellers to launch competing products
The cheapest pack comes FROM competition. You, as the consumer, want the cheapest pack. You want competition. It's the most basic of economic principles.

P.S. making comments without a basic education of a topic is equally boring to read. I would rather you say it and have the chance to learn than silence you though.
