johnla··on Exceeding 1.5°C global warming could trigger multiple climate tipping points
So are there any parts of the world that will benefit from global warming? Canadian and Russian wilderness?
johnla··on Who owns Tesla’s data?
Well, if I can't rob banks in my Tesla then I don't think it's even worth getting one anymore.

Also via email still.

This is so funny. I started mountain biking last year and it's been fun but I wanted to do something with my wife as a hobby. I'll look into Kayaking. LOL.

Do you do a 2 person kayak or 2 separate 1 person kayaks?

johnla··on No Refrigerant Left Behind
Feels like the perfect thing for a Bill Gates, Elon Musk or other rich guy to bankroll. I know it's not the job of billionaires to do but it should be a government thing. But the Southeast Asian countries probably wouldn't do it and neither would the US do it for another country. The amount they're trying to raise seems like it would be tiny for a billionaire type.
johnla··on What hacking AOL taught a generation of programmers
I don't have a source but in my Technology specialized HS a classmate came in with a THICK looseleaf ringbound book filled with Names, address, phone and credit card info. Each sheet was in tiny print and absolutely filled to the brim. I'd have to guess there were easily over 500 pages print front and back. He said it was from AOL hacking. I was just noob playing with the AOHell prog and didn't really utilize the app for anything more than "busting" into Lobbies that were full.
johnla··on Elon Musk to join Twitter’s board of directors
Can't argue that he puts his money where his mouth is. He's just not just a passive critic.

johnla··on Wordle-solving state of the art: all optimality results so far
You jinxed it. Tomorrow's word will be HONDA
johnla··on No Way to Grow Up
My kids are in NYC public schools too. My 3rd grader opted into the state assessment tests. They release the scores with breakdowns how the kids do by grade and school. This time they didn't. I'm pretty sure it's because of how terrible the results were that it'd be a scandal.
johnla··on Can “Distraction-Free” Devices Change the Way We Write?
This might sound dumb and too obvious but why not just turn off wifi and go fullscreen on your editor?
johnla··on El Salvador's Bitcoin use grows but headaches persist
And coin exchanges are becoming mainstream. There are lots of transactional coins that can be converted into. Although there are still some usability hurdles, it's getting better all the time.
johnla··on Tesla Announces a Humanoid Robot “Tesla Bot”
I feel like with Tesla navigational brain technology, they can easily put together a bot that can mow lawns, sweep and mop floors. Pull out the garbage/bring cans back in. Security Sentry observe. Get mail. Walk dog. Deliver packages. I would pay for a bot that takes those chores off my hands.

> No matter SpaceX is universally accepted as the globally dominate space company

You missed the opportunity to say "globally accepted as the universally dominate space company"

johnla··on Hash collision in Apple NeuralHash model
I don't think this can be used to harm an innocent person. It can raise a red flag but it would be quickly unraised and perhaps an investigation into the source of the fakeout images because THAT person had to have had the real images in possession.

If anything, this gives weapons to people against the scanner as we can now bomb the system with false positives rendering it impossible to use. I don't know enough about cryptography but I wonder if there is any ramifications of the hash being broken.

johnla··on EFF: ICANN Expands Role with Speech Regulation
Is this why we need a decentralized Certificate Authority like Handshake.org so ICANN doesn't have too much power to censor the Internet?

johnla··on Did Draw Something by Omgpop really cost $140,000?
I like these series of product breakdowns that you do! It's sort of like the teardowns that some sites do to show the total cost of the product like when a new iPhone comes out and they see that it has like $200 worth of parts or something.

Really interesting. I do feel there are a lot more intangible costs that are not taken into account. It is more like the cost to recreate an existing product. Building a product is like looking for gold in the woods. It will require a lot of blind walking until finding the gold. And then others can just take shortcuts to follow. The original cost is much higher.

So I guess the question is that since Zynga could've recreated Draw Something for about $140,000, should they have just done that instead of buying OMGPOP. :-)

johnla··on Did Draw Something by Omgpop really cost $140,000?
The amount Zynga bought them for is not so much for the game, but for their users and also to eliminate a competitor. It is possible that OMGPOP could've grown and become the eventual company that would overtake Zynga. It's good defense by Zynga!
johnla··on Did Draw Something by Omgpop really cost $140,000?
They definitely did NOT overpay. Zynga bought them for $200 MILLION US Dollars.

The cost of building that game are also the lessons they learned along the way. Also, for a team of developers, server administrators, project managers, I'd imagine their salaries for their services alone not including office space , computers and services would've cost way more than that.

I think this is a great article. OMGPOP didn't have the advantage of hindsight in building their product. I really doubt they knew what they were doing. Their advantage was being agile and adjusting their game and business model to how the crowd was playing the game.

johnla··on It would cost $175k to clone Instagram
True. I watched an interview of one of the founders and he revealed that Instagram is just a offshoot feature of their original product. So the cost of mistakes are not taken into account.

It's like someone proving out that E=MC^2 AFTER Einstein already figured out the problem.

It's still a cool exercise to do! I wish he would do that for more sites and apps! I bet the Draw Something app isn't that expensive to reproduce.

Thanks. I was just looking into this.
