johnjhayes··on Judge orders tech company to release Web user data from anti-Trump website
>>There used to be a due process before someone was fired, I wonder where that went and who took it away?

johnjhayes··on Chrome Enterprise
So they are assholes if they don't want to spend company resources allowing you to check your personal email while at work? Yeah, you've worked for a "different sort", the kind that waste money it seems.

Many places I've worked don't allow use of personal cell phones while at work, much less allowing access to personal accounts on enterprise equipment. Security is hard, adding complexity is a bad idea.

johnjhayes··on Chrome Enterprise
I get what you're saying, but Google's history here is atrocious, which is why business' are skittish, people aren't just going to take their word for it. You go first, if you and 100 others have a good experience maybe that attitude will change. Until then, hard pass.
johnjhayes··on Bezos should put his billions in public libraries
Consider extreme rural areas. I've lived most of my life in rural Alabama and libraries provide an essential resource for many. Giving these people a laptop and a subscription doesn't help much if they don't have a decent internet connection (or one at all).
johnjhayes··on Bezos should put his billions in public libraries
>>I'm wondering why we've never heard of anyone making a good career move by setting up tech at a library

Because they are underfunded, Bezos seems to be addressing that.

>>kind of my point, no?

No, the provided example seems to be counter to your point.

johnjhayes··on Carlsbad, CA to photograph every car entering city
my initial reaction is to be against this, and then I think but I'm for driverless cars and that cat is pretty much born outside of the bag.
johnjhayes··on Julian Assange Press Conference on CIA Vault
>>I don't understand the hatred of Russia

the USA and Russia (USSR) have been at odds far longer than I've been alive.

>>Wouldn't we want to be allies with the second most powerful country?

maybe, but we aren't talking about China here (I have no idea how you would rank Russia as the 2nd most powerful country, but please enlighten me).

>>any evidence of the hacking?

No, but (at least from my perspective) the razor appears to be leaning heavily in one direction.

johnjhayes··on White House proposes steep budget cut to NOAA
>Certainly they believe that weather exists?

Exists? Sure. What it actually is? Not really.

"Trump also misrepresented what happened to the weather during his swearing in. He said he felt a few drops of rain as he started delivering his address, but then, “God looked down and, and he said we’re not going to let it rain on your speech.. . .The truth is it stopped immediately.”

Light rain continued to fall through the first few minutes of the speech — and VIP’s at the dais took out ponchos, including former president George W. Bush — and then quit. Trump said there was a downpour right after he finished, which did not occur." - https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-in-cia-visit-a...

johnjhayes··on Adding a phone number to your Google account can make it less secure
>Bob didn’t have multi-factor authentication enabled

even if enabled, if it was set to send the code as sms it would go to ... the phone :-\

johnjhayes··on Woman of 24 found to have no cerebellum in her brain
The article indicates it's the actual scan and says the space "was filled with cerebrospinal fluid, which cushions the brain and provides defence against disease."
johnjhayes··on How to turn into a tree after you die
>>As I understood it, the "ashes" you receive post-cremation are actually the ground remains of bones from all cremations that took place that day

While that is, unfortunately, pretty common for pet cremations it not supposed to be that way for humans.

johnjhayes··on Can I Be Trusted?
Trust is not boolean. I have a reasonable amount of trust in Bruce Schneier based on the information I have available.
johnjhayes··on How to succeed with your IT department
I get where you are coming from, however, if being nice gets you better service from IT then, yes, you work at a dysfunctional company. Maybe changing the culture of the company would be a good idea. From my perspective what you are doing is a workaround to the dysfunction, not something that will solve the problem long term.
johnjhayes··on How to succeed with your IT department
Yes, a few. They do it by being competent and aware. The point I'm trying to make is that if you don't understand what you need an IT person isn't going to be able to solve your problems by just throwing technology against a wall. You don't need to understand the technology, but you have to have a very clear understanding of what you need to accomplish and then communicate that clearly.

Everyone should try to be friendly and professional, and clearly being rude won't win you any favors, but you shouldn't get moved to the front of the line because you stopped by to talk about last nights game or how my kids are doing. That's not a solution that can scale.

johnjhayes··on Fuck Off As A Service (FOAAS)
My time! It's been wasted! Oh noes!
johnjhayes··on How to succeed with your IT department
I already have too many people coming by and trying to talk and be my friend. That just prevents me from getting work done. Of course being nice to people is always a good thing to do, but it's not going to solve IT problems.

Here is what you can do: understand your needs, communicate them clearly and have realistic goals. That's it.

johnjhayes··on The Send to Kindle Button
That's what I was thinking, I've been using that in Chrome for a long, long time. But this is talking about a 'share' button directly on the web site, as in it's in the list of 'share' buttons like fb, g+, email and all the rest.

I'm not really following why anyone would want to do it that way, if you have a kindle and read web sites like that you likely already have the sendtokindle extension. This seems to just be adding clutter to something I already consider clutter. Guess I'm not the target market, as usual.

johnjhayes··on Mythbusters experiment goes awry, sends cannonball through two houses
"That stunt should never have happened where it did"

yep, they really should have picked a better location, like a military firing range ....

johnjhayes··on LSD: The Geek's Wonder Drug
LSD is steroids for meditation. A cheat and a shortcut to the hard work. But it certainly seems to work ;-)
johnjhayes··on Why is Google so hysterically hypocritical about Bing using its public data?
The only thing I haven't seen is this. Ok, using the clickstream data is an established practice, but does Google use clickstream data from users making searches on OTHER search engines, or just their own?

This is the crux for me, Bing is using data from Google, does Google use data from Bing or only themselves?

Even if all true, I don't see it as unethical business practice. Definitely a marketing black eye, but not much else.

johnjhayes··on Is it ok to use warez software at a startup?
If a company is willing to do something unethical in the beginning, why would they stop later when much more money is involved?

I'm going with no, it's never ok.
