johneth··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
And not all EU members have ratified CETA either, so I'm not sure why everyone's getting their hopes up about "associate membership", whatever that is (it's not defined in the EU treaties). They can't even fully ratify a trade deal after almost a decade.
johneth··on US diesel hits record $6 a gallon on Iran supply shock
> they don't want cheap gas

You don't strengthen an enemy (Russia) by buying their products. Defence is more important.

> as well as shutting down reactors

A German problem, not a wider European one.

The solution is to accelerate the transition into electric vehicles (including HGVs etc.), renewable energy, and nuclear. Oil is obviously still needed for materials production, air fuel, and so on, but extricating ourselves from situations where oil is becoming optional as fast as possible is the best course, not continuing to buy cheap gas from an aggressive neighbour that's fucking your elections and invading its neighbour.

johneth··on Understanding the recent DDoS attack against Read the Docs
There's also the JA4+ suite (https://github.com/FoxIO-LLC/ja4), in addition to standard JA4.
johneth··on “Tweet” and the bird logo apparently enter the public domain
> My point is that this term has been used so loosely, it has lost its meaning.

Have you taken a look at X/Twitter lately? There is a lot of out and out racism. Don't give the benefit of the doubt that it's just people who want "border control".

johneth··on UN to vote on adopting new world map that shows Africa's true scale
You've got to start somewhere with these things, where better than the UN?
johneth··on Creepy Crawlies
There's JA4 fingerprinting (and the JA4+ suite), but still not a surefire way of detecting. Plus the metadata for the signatures has to be constantly maintained and updated.

johneth··on Creepy Crawlies
Just look at another tab while you're waiting if you're that bothered.

If there was a way of detecting the proxy SDKs, it would be a simple matter of banning the device. Or at least naming and shaming the apps that use them.
johneth··on You Know GDPR Is Good Based on Who Hates It
> She had to go to Berlin data authority periodically and report status.

That seems more of a German bureaucracy thing rather than GDPR specifically.

The UK, which does still implement GDPR from its time as a member state, does not require this level of officiousness.

johneth··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
I'd have to agree, given the past alerts (https://www.gov.uk/alerts/past-alerts) seem to be reasonable and localised.

Hopefully they take heed.

johneth··on Young People Hate AI CEOs So Passionately That It's Almost Hard to Believe
They "believe" that for the sake of their stock options and IPOs, not out of any actual belief.
johneth··on Tell HN: Cloudflare silently injects its analytics when you switch nameservers
The benefit of not being MITM'd by Cloudflare is probably worth it in many cases.
johneth··on A year of fighting scrapers on my 1.5 million-page website
LLMs are not unbiased. Nothing is unbiased.
johneth··on EU will mandate labels on authentic-looking AI content starting August 2
> Those who are attempting to mislead won't.

Sure, but this mandate means that if they're caught (which isn't unlikely), they can be fined up to 3% of revenue (not profit). Many will be outside the EU's jurisdiction, but not all. Taken together, this will have a chilling effect, not stopping it entirely, but likely reducing it.

johneth··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
From their style guide:

"Where you would normally pronounce the abbreviation as a string of letters - an initialism - use all capitals with no full stops or spaces (eg FA, UNHCR). However, our style is to use lower case with an initial cap for acronyms where you would normally pronounce the set of letters as a word (eg Maga, Sars, Aids, Nasa, Opec, Apec)."

(Under "acronym": https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsstyleguide/a )

johneth··on Who does Anubis actually stop?
Yes, they have no obligations to you, just as you have no obligations to them (beyond whatever licenses apply to their content).
johneth··on Short sellers notch $8.7B profit as SpaceX shares dip to IPO price
What makes you think Paul Graham knows what he's talking about re: space, data centers, and the logistics of lifting data centers into space and the ongoing maintenance of them. I don't understand the deification his thoughts receive around here.
johneth··on Count Binface
The other parties aren't standing in this particular byelection because they (correctly) realise that it's just a media stunt by Farage, who is attempting to paint himself as a victim of establishment harassment (while being the epitome of 'the establishment' himself). By not standing, and forcing Farage to run against joke candidates, they've made a fool of him (which generally harms populists more than anything else you can throw at them).

The other parties have all said that they will run candidates against Farage in the almost inevitable second byelection that will by triggered later when parliament finishes its investigation into his corruption and punishes him for it.

johneth··on US residents angry datacenters 'shoved down our throats' are recalling officials
> If you go in with the assumption that democracy does not work, then there is also no point in protesting

You mean peaceful protesting. There are other kinds of protesting that may have better success.

johneth··on Spain Orders Blacklist of Palantir from Public and Private Companies
> i’m convinced we’re going to find out at some point they’re all on some kind of modern meth type drug that entirely breaks their reality

It's called being out-of-touch obscenely wealthy coupled with a massive ego.

johneth··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
It is extremely difficult for me to care about the fate of private schools. In my opinion, they shouldn't exist. If the rich are forced to send their children to the same schools as everyone else, maybe they'll pressure the government to improve said schools.
johneth··on Identity verification on Claude
Out of pure curiosity, which UK bank was it?
johneth··on From Australia to Europe, countries move to curb children's social media access
I think "over-18" posts on X within the feed are hidden behind a "please verify your age" button if you've not verified your age (in UK and parts of EU, probably Australia too). They're intermixed with non-hidden posts.

X lets post authors mark their content as NSFW, and I'd assume they're doing some sort of algorithmic checking or making use of user reports of content to classify content too, to varying degrees of success. It's definitely subject to the whims of the platform owner, given the sheer amount of racism, sexism, and porn that isn't marked.

My account is >18 years old so it never showed up for me (it just used the account age to determine I'm old enough), so I'm going by what others have said.

johneth··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Completely ignoring all the ways in which space data centers are fucking infeasible for a moment.

Just because there are no laws in space, you still need to launch your rockets from a place that has laws.

johneth··on IPv6 zones in URLs are a mistake
I've just been implementing a bunch of URL-related utility functions in Go. Decided the most pragmatic solution of handling IPv6 addresses in URL hosts is to outright reject zone identifiers because of the ambiguity in how to parse / serialize them, and the inconsistent ways others have done it (or most of the time, not done it).

RFC 3986 says "This syntax does not support IPv6 scoped addressing zone identifiers." Makes sense because '%' is a reserved character for percent encoding (hence the %25 that Go's net/url expects).

The URL Standard explicitly states "Support for <zone_id> is intentionally omitted."

johneth··on Morningstar values SpaceX at $780B, half its IPO target
The stock market is not about future results, it's about gambling, especially over the last decade.
johneth··on Danish pension fund excludes SpaceX citing governance and valuation
If you buy the "AI DCs in space" pitch, you deserve to be parted from your money.
johneth··on Danish Pension Blacklists SpaceX over 'Catastrophic Governance'
All good points, but I think their main point of poor governance is still the pure motivation.
johneth··on YouTube to automatically label AI-generated videos
You can change the audio track back to the original.

Not sure if it remembers your preference, though, so if it doesn't that probably grates.
