Yup, these mirrors can only point directly up (zenith telescope). Any adjustment off horizontally to the earth deforms the curve of the mirror. Some liquid mirror telescopes exist today to track space debris. Cheap and useful.
Given the hexagonal layout of JWST's beryllium mirrors, future telescopes could 'just' increase the size of the mirror by launching multiple payloads of these mirrors and aligning them in space to form one giant layout. It doesn't seem much of a stretch beyond the complexity and single points of failure NASA managed to hurdle with JWST. How hard can it be? ;-)
JWST is a taxpayer funded science mission, and the science run on the observatory isn't a pay-per-use model. I don't think a second JWST available for hire would see anywhere near the demand JWST currently fields.
And decommissioning promises to be more manageable and less expensive with microreactors. Individual microreactors can be swapped as they age out and decommissioned/refurbished elsewhere.
This happened to me yesterday although I was able to quickly unlock my account on my MacBook pro. I spent a while making sure it wasn't an attempt by a backdoor to access my password. Felt very suspicious!
A strange star is still matter so that matter would just fall into the black hole as any other matter would. Tidal forces prior to the merger could result in some of the stranglet material being spewed out into space. AFAIK strange stars are an unconfirmed theory at present and the 'super stable' nature of strange matter, I'm unsure of what would happen. It'd be interesting to know this for sure.
The cynic in me says it was probably lobby groups that kept the favorable status quo going for the incumbents. Do people in the US have any decent choices when choosing cable operators?
Not a US person here, but I'd be interested in knowing if there are any 'customer-friendly' alternatives available. For example, I'm in the UK and specifically chose Zen internet as my broadband provider for its more customer-centric terms over the many other broadband providers available to the UK market.
That’s kind of misanthropic, talking in absolute terms. I could agree in terms of low possibilities but certainly not absolutes. I feel it does a disservice to the few who actually come up with genius solutions to problems humanity faces and the many who dedicate their lives to solving them too.
My wife and I landed in NRT a couple months ago and had a taxi leave us high and dry. We had to book a taxi there and then and it cost $450 to Tokyo in a standard taxi. The pre booked taxi that left us H&M was $200.
The punitive US Justice System doesn't seem to be as effective at deterring crime as Norway. There are other factors contributing to crime, such as equality of opportunity and income etc.
At a glance, major crime in the US is much more common than in Norway. Although the total crimes committed per 1000 population is higher in Norway... I'll go down a rabbit hole detailing how that number was derived.
Would the real Satoshi, please stand up... I used to ponder who the real Bitcoin creator really could be. You can go down a rabbit hole if you're inclined. They could be a group of people, but the consensus ;) seems to be that from his original participation in forums while creating the protocol, it was a single person. There's a huge amount of coin tied up in the original wallets he/she/they must have minted still that hasn't moved... Billion's of dollars worth of coin too.
I think asking the question "Can OpenAI create superintelligence" telegraphs a lack of understanding of where the intelligence, in AI, comes from. Mimicking intelligence based on patterns identified in LLMs isn't a bedrock for creating "superintelligence." I expect something like self-learning neural networks to be the basis for that.
Actually, I do this when making a banana split. Cut a piece off the top and then slowly press the banana into thirds. Then, lower the banana, with the bottom part of the banana still intact, into a tall glass. Smoother with cream, ice cream and/or syrup. Makes for a solid banana split.
Gas pressure is the atoms/molecules bouncing off something else. If the atoms have more energy, then they impart more energy into whatever they bounce off (inside of the balloon), which essentially means higher pressure i.e. the balloon appears inflated again. Until the sun goes away and the OP's party dies for a time. :)
Completely agree. I’m looking for a new car and I’ve dry runned some long road trips I commonly do between Yorkshire and Dublin, and in a pure ev car, it’s a very different prospect to petrol only.
Plus, hybrid has lots of regenerative energy recovery that can be done to extend the mpg on the same fuel.
A key detail is that the Post Office specifically had a method for secretly and remotely editing accounts of post masters and lied about its existence. Along with experts lying under oath that the software had no known issues that could result in the account errors they were seeing, when in fact the ‘expert’ was well aware at the point that horizon was rife with such bugs.
That’s the crux of the scandal. The Post Office had experts claim under oath that ‘horizon is faultless and fit for purpose’. Mounting evidence shows that these experts were evidently aware that they were lying and so the scandal is taking on a new turn. Police are investigating the perjury that might have contributed to the prosecution’s by the PO. I want to see key people at the PO sent the jail in the same manner any one else who perjured themselves would be. It appears that some power politics went on in the background that either covered up the scandal, or could have ended it early, but turned a blind eye.
Hopefully, everyone is safe. But what of the homes? I'm interested to know what generally occurs, in terms of insurance, when homes and property are destroyed by lava flow? Is there insurance coverage for such events? Are the homeowners covered to rebuild/buy new homes elsewhere?
Sounds promising. I'll wait till other people have been using them a while though ;-).
And maybe I'm becoming cynical in my old age but when I hear the inventor of an atomic battery say "it is absolutely safe", I ponder, "how well do you know your battery".
This Post Office scandal is currently ongoing in the UK. The Fujitsu developer in question confirmed what the Post Office was denying, that the Horizon software at the center of the scandal, had implemented methods for secretly editing accounts. Approx 700 postmasters (self-employed managers of Post Office branches) were held responsible when large amounts of cash appeared to have vanished from tills, resulting in prosecutions for fraud and theft.
I know someone who was affected by this, who managed a now-closed Post Office branch here in Wakefield, UK and it was a life ruining ordeal for her. She was accused of stealing £1,000's in cash. I'm not sure if it was a bug or someone remotely changed the account records for her branch, but the campaign the Post Office ran to smear any accusations of wrongfulness on the part of the Horizon software is shocking.
This is very interesting. It looks like most of the London train stations have a regional focus. I often travel to London from Leeds, so Kingscross is the terminating station (true for Scotland and the North East), Euston seems to be mostly North West, St Pancras is the midlands and South East, Paddington is South West and Victoria is South/South East. Fascinating to see this illustrated in Graph form. Nice!
2 days a month isn't a big deal at all. I'm in the UK, and regularly travel anything from 2 to 8 days a month to a role in Germany and the Netherlands.
I think the movie suffers from overly liberal use of creative license. Sure, I t’s science fiction but there needs to be some sense in most of a movie’s events. For example, why did a hulking huge space based invasion force need to show up to a ground village of a few, basically, organic farmers? I figure Zack thought it’d look cool. And it does, but the story becomes less believable. I can’t help be feel that a ‘high quality’ team of creative writers should have been able to make that particular event work and make sense. I think this is a common problem in a lot of movies that try to be bigger than they are.
