johndoe0815··on Acorn in the f'n WWDC 2025 Keynote
Not the company that developed the ARM processor, only some app...
johndoe0815··on Is there some way to better understand TAOCP Vol 1 by Knuth?
MIX is a strange 1960s-style architecture, Knuth designed a followup 64-bit RISC-like theoretical architecture, the MMIX, with contributions from the designers of the MIPS and DEC Alpha architecture:

johndoe0815··on Ask HN: Any MacBook Alternative?
If you are concerned about spyware, don't think about buying an x86-based machine that uses Intel ME (management engine) technology – so, any system produced in the last ~15 years:

So a company trying to sell vibe coding is not viable? Call me surprised…
johndoe0815··on How to Learn Chip Design with Open-Source EDA Tools
Spam, the promised content is behind a paywall.
johndoe0815··on Muse Pi Pro is a Raspberry Pi-sized RISC-V PC with M.2 and mPCIe sockets
The OrangePi RV2 is a less expensive RISC-V SBC option if you don't need 16 GB RAM: http://www.orangepi.org/html/hardWare/computerAndMicrocontro...

It also has two Ethernet interfaces and a full-size (2280) M2 PCIe slot for SSDs in addition to a 2230 slot.

johndoe0815··on A Remarkable Newly Deciphered Hittite Tablet Sheds New Light on the Trojan War
I was wondering about the "Keilfischurkunden" mentioned in the article. Cuneiform is "Keilschrift" (wedge writing) in German, whereas "Keilfisch" would translate to a wedge fish, whatever that might be.
johndoe0815··on Why is there a “small house” in IBM's Code page 437?
One more theory - it could be a tabulator or cursor symbol (for word processing applications).
johndoe0815··on Dijkstra would've (incorrectly) HATED vibe-coding
From TFA: "...the apps we’re building today do not have a clear notion of correctness". Enough read. Leave poor EJD in piece.
johndoe0815··on Germany creates 'super–high-tech ministry' for research, technology, aerospace
German only, sorry. Both are reputable news outlets (though the Spiegel has gone down quite a bit in recent years IMHO).

https://www.zeit.de/politik/deutschland/2013-04/baer-csu-geh... https://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/csu-politikerin-d...

She hired her future husband as an employee until immediately before their wedding. This position was paid by the federal German parliament, i.e. the taxpayer. It's illegal to hire a relative in such a position.

johndoe0815··on Germany creates 'super–high-tech ministry' for research, technology, aerospace
And it will probably be headed by one of the most incompetent and corrupt politicians they were able to find. Disgusting.
johndoe0815··on Apple’s Darwin OS and XNU Kernel Deep Dive
Apple was firstly involved in porting Linux to PPC, albeit running on top of Mach 3 in MkLinux, since early 1996:

johndoe0815··on Things Microsoft has ever made
At least Teams and Outlook are not on that list...

The only Microsoft thing I enjoy to "use" is Raymond Chen's blog. Highly recommended if you are interested in computer architecture, operating systems, compilers and related topics:

johndoe0815··on Hi
Spammer.
johndoe0815··on Bill Gates on first OS he wrote: 'Code remains the coolest I've ever written'
...of course, that was a BASIC interpreter and not an OS. I don't think Gates ever wrote OS code?
johndoe0815··on Watts Should Replace MAh as Essential Spec for Mobile Devices
"With watts, you can tell how much literal power is under the hood — how much energy is provided by your battery [...]".

Ouch.

johndoe0815··on The Rise of Vibe Coding
From TFA: "Creativity trumps syntax as 40M+ users hack apps without coding know-how".

So I assume semantics are no longer relevant and we don't really care what the generated software will actually do?

What a piece of bull...

johndoe0815··on Volkswagen seeks to counter rivals with budget EV model

johndoe0815··on The Worst Neighborhood in Japan
Whow, the articles of this person about Japan are extremely obnoxious and arrogant. Don't waste your time...
johndoe0815··on AI-generated JIT compilers from interpreters: Are we there yet?
I see no reason for any sort of AI to be applied here.

There's an interesting guide on converting an interpreter into a static binary translator: https://gtoal.com/sbt/

It would be great to see this expanded into a JIT compiler (using a generic translated code management/caching and optimization framework).

johndoe0815··on ACCESS.bus: The Forgotten USB Competitor
The article mentions the MIPS/Ultrix-based DECstation 5000 series as systems that provide an ACCESS.bus interface. However, only systems from the Personal DECstation 5000 range (R3000-based models 5000/20,25,33 and the R4000-based 5000/50, codename "Maxine") provided an ACCESS.bus interface and the related peripherals (LK501 keyboard and VSXXX-BB mouse). I wrote the first Linux drivers for these in the 1990s and still have a number of Personal DECstations sitting in my basement...

If you want to experiment with ACCESS.bus, there's an app note from Philips (AN445, https://www.elenota.pl/datasheet-pdf/150926/Philips/APPLICAT...) and example code for an 8051-based ACCESS.bus mouse (http://www.microshadow.com/files/files8051/abmouse.zip).

The official ACCESS.bus specification can be found at https://archive.org/download/DECAlphaDocs (file names A.bus_spec_sec_[0-5]_v2_0.ps)

johndoe0815··on The Unix Operating System Is an IDE (2021)
They should have included Plan 9's acme, which is also part of plan9ports (Plan 9 running in Unix userspace).
johndoe0815··on RISC-V Mainboard for Framework Laptop 13 is now available
It was available for some days last year from http://arace.tech - but it was not explicitly listed IIRC and the product page you found using the search function showed it as pre-order only as you mention.

Nevertheless, I got lucky and was able to order one last year. It's a nice device, but software support outside of the provided Bianbu Linux (a Chinese Ubuntu derivative) is nonexistent and the future of the SpacemiT SoCs is not exactly clear. I can run Ubuntu for the BananaPi F3 (same SoC) from an SD card with working drivers and power management but did not yet succeed in installing Ubuntu on an internal PCIe/NVME SSD I added.

johndoe0815··on RISC-V Mainboard for Framework Laptop 13 is now available
You can also buy a Framework Laptop 13 chassis without Intel or AMD board now for 445€, so the complete RISC-V Framework 13 is 644€.

This is more than twice the price of the Musebook (using a SpaceMIT M1 8-core SoC and also a PCIe slot for an SSD), which has unfortunately not been available for several months now...
