johncessna··on Clarification on the Notepad++ Trademark Issue
I'd call it Notepad#
johncessna··on Afroman found not liable in defamation case
I'm not saying what they did was correct, but they were allegedly told that he had a drug operation and a kidnapping dungeon.
johncessna··on We were right about Havana syndrome
As a reminder, they are likely subject to the lifetime prepublication review[1] which requires anything published to be reviewed by the agency prior to publishing.

johncessna··on 19th century silent film that first captured a robot attack
From the article

> (The word "robot" didn't appear until 1921, when Czech dramatist Karel Čapek coined it in his science fiction play R.U.R..)

johncessna··on Steam can't escape the fallout from its censorship controversy
Why shouldn't they have been on steam? There are plenty of movies we can all go buy/rent/watch on amazon right now that have that content.
johncessna··on Brave blocks Microsoft Recall by default
Don't forget that Recall was initially on by default. It wasn't until users were like, WTF, did they make it off by default.

That will last for as long as it takes for the value of privacy and ownership erodes further and then it'll get switched back to on by default.

johncessna··on Australian anti-porn group claims responsibility for Steams new censorship rules
Yeah, nearly 80 years ago, and he married in Germany. First cousin marriages in the US today will certainly warrant some side eye as Sharlin mentioned.

According to wikipedia 24 states have it banned and then 7 more apply restrictions such as a minimum age or infertility

johncessna··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
Morally Righteous? I think it's more they don't have to so they don't. It's like the DVR days where you'd just fast forward ads. It wasn't a moral high ground, it was just easy to do and was better than the alternative.
johncessna··on Women 3x More Likely to Lose Job to AI Than Men, UN Study Finds
> Don't be fooled by media bias & misinformation.

Don't be fooled indeed.

johncessna··on I had to take down my course-swapping site or be expelled
Tell them that. Alumni support is critical for a university and if they feel their donation base is upset, change will happen.
johncessna··on The Daily Scrum: Does It Have to Be Daily?
It's really important to know the history of agile and why it came about. I don't think it's the problem. The root problem, which is true for any other methodology is business's unwillingness to accept uncertainty and change.

Standups were co-opted from a people-working-the-sprint touch point to discuss A 24 hour window and address problem, and turned into a status meeting, a jira hygiene meeting, or an number of unrelated things.

The answer to management's question, 'when will you be done' is, "at the end of the sprint." Don't ask me to report a daily, or god forbid, hourly status.

johncessna··on Uber drivers in Kenya are ignoring the app and charging their own rates
This used to be very common in the US especially around airports where drivers wait for up to an hour to get a fare and want to make sure it's worth the wait. It may still be happening, but I just go straight for the cab to avoid the hassle.

johncessna··on NSA releases 1982 Grace Hopper lecture
She also talks about the first bug during this one as well as some general lore, history, lessons learned and brings up some good future problems - some of which got solved, some didn't. Def worth watching the whole thing.
johncessna··on Programmers Don't Read Books – But You Should (2008)
The Gof book should be on the list, but I agree that it suffers from similar problems that a lot of first-of-their-kinds do. There are iterations on it that are a much better read.
johncessna··on Room inspections at Resorts World confuse, annoy DEF CON attendees
It's been an issue in the past, and the articles mention it.
johncessna··on Cancer rates are rising in young people
or the ability to deal with stress declined
johncessna··on Why Americans aren't having babies
They, and anyone else, is welcome to have as much avocado toast as they'd like. Just don't say that XYZ is unaffordable because their money went to other financial choices.
johncessna··on Why Americans aren't having babies
I think the expense aspect doesn't dig deep enough. There are plenty of poor countries (and folks) having children. Additionally, being rich and having lots of kids don't usually go hand in hand (admittedly stereotypical)

Not wanting to be poor, or more likely, trading the yearly trip to $insertPlaceHere, eating out on the weekends, or the daily Starbucks, for a new kid, isn't a bad, but 'too expensive' doesn't really describe that situation accurately.

johncessna··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
In the context of the GP where they were actively treating a heart attack, the act of restarting the computer (let alone it never come back) in of itself seems like an issue.
johncessna··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
Why did they update everything all at once?

johncessna··on Group of 17 London secondary schools join up to go smartphone-free
Typical fear mongering that got phones all over the schools in the first place. Kids aren't getting abducted or even using their phones in an emergency capacity.
johncessna··on Kia Issues 'Park Outside' Recall for 2020-2024 Telluride Vehicles for Fire Risk
Relevant Recall: https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2020/KIA/TELLURIDE/SUV/AWD#rec...

NHTSA still gives that year make and model a 5 out of 5 on the safety rating, probably doesn't account for this latest recall.

I'd be curious to see these recalls in the context of other year, make, and models. Are 6 recalls, 2 of which can cause it to catch on fire, typical on a 4 year old car?

johncessna··on [dead]
Maybe it's my lack of being natively fluent in English, but the switching between sarcasm and genuine enthusiasm is confusing.

Of course, I'm assuming the author is being sarcastic about gaining the ability to use calculator on an ipad, which would be on me.

johncessna··on Rents are rising faster than wages across the country
Taxes, utilities, heating costs, construction costs, insurance cost, the cost of a new property (build or buy) are all going up. The title on this article could have easily been '$insertAnythingHere going up faster than wages'

I can speak to the 'mom and pop' landlords. The best you can hope for is that your properties are paid for. If they're leveraged, it's a razor thin margin where are one roof replacement, furnace replacement, or state/local government deciding failure to pay isn't grounds for eviction away from losing money.

johncessna··on Egypt's pyramids may have been built on a long-lost branch of the Nile
As someone who doesn't know much about archeology, I watched the netflix show and thought it was interesting and had a lot of questions. Knowing that it's one perspective and that there has been information has likely been left out and/or there were either answers, or at least commonly accepted explanations, I started looking around for what those were and what the academics had to say.

I found this channel and couldn't get more than 30 minutes. He starts off well saying that he didn't want to dismiss it all as nonsense but that doesn't last long. So yeah, If you want to watch someone ridicule an alternative theory that has been presented, or present commonly accepted theories as matter of fact, then sure, great channel.
