johnboiles··on PCB is brought to you by Fable 5
Such a bummer that PCBAs are 2-3x more expensive than they were before 2025.
johnboiles··on PCB is brought to you by Fable 5
What PCB software did you give it? I'm having great success with Fusion (formerly known as Eagle) and others seem to be doing great with KiCad.
johnboiles··on PCB is brought to you by Fable 5
Yes! I have made and ordered 3 PCBs with Astra and Autodesk Fusion since the Astra release. First one has arrived and worked great. I especially love how the model can wrangle all the JLC stuff. What a time we live in
johnboiles··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
Yes. I just made one with Fusion and Codex.
johnboiles··on Claude writing a macOS driver for my obscure HP printer built only for Windows
I've been having great success with the robots reverse engineering things too. https://github.com/johnboiles/ble-label-printers https://github.com/eastbaymakersclub/pixcut-s1 I've been using Codex in the ChatGPT app for this and it's been really neat to watch it download the vendor's app, decompile it, and make the hardware work.

Also, these CO2 canaries are neat. We got one for our office https://a.co/d/02EKUci9

Yes in one way or another
johnboiles··on I spent a year on Linux and forgot to miss Windows
Y'all it's been a couple decades but is it _actually_ the year of the Linux desktop now??
johnboiles··on My Home Fibre Network Disintegrated
That seems incredibly fast for plastic to degrade like that. I wonder if you could have something generating ozone in there.
johnboiles··on Workday project at Washington University hits $266M
How organizations would pay for Workday baffles me. It is the worst company software I've ever used. It would regularly lose data that managers would input so the best practice amongst EMs was to never put data directly into Workday but instead keep copies elsewhere and only input it into Workday at the last moment. Then if Workday decided to drop your performance feedback you could just paste it again.

It must be really really really good for the HR decision makers though?

johnboiles··on Workday project at Washington University hits $266M
Can confirm. It's like they actively try to make it terrible.
johnboiles··on Maestro Technology Sells Used SSD Drives as New
I got bit by this exact seller on Amazon earlier this year. "New" drive had SMART power-on time of 25371 hours.

* I reported it to Amazon's fraud team (with evidence): No response

* I wrote the seller a bad review (also with evidence!): Taken down by Amazon

johnboiles··on Asahi Linux Still Working on Apple M3 Support, M1n1 Bootloader Going Rust
> there's for example Linux-specific software which puts the WiFi card in promiscuous mode and does useful stuff with that

In the past, I've made this specific thing work with USB passthrough, Virtualbox, and external USB WiFi adapters with monitor mode support.

GPUs back in the day were only for gamers. Now they are for increasing your ai b2b saas arr.
johnboiles··on Ask HN: What's a good 3D Printer for sub $1000?
I have a Bambu X1C and a Prusa MK3.9S (mostly upgraded MK3S).

The Bambu is incredible at PLA. It is so fast and consistently perfect. The 0.2mm nozzle makes unreal detail small parts. But I struggle to do other materials with it like TPU, PETG, ABS.

The Prusa takes generally whatever material I throw at it and does a great job just using the PrusaSlicer built in profiles. It's also the minimum viable printer -- it's 80% as good as the Bambu but a fraction of the complexity. I am 100% confident I could keep it running indefinitely where the Bambu is mostly proprietary parts and software.

johnboiles··on Backblaze Drive Stats for Q2 2025
Be warned, there are fraudulent sellers on Amazon that sell used drives from this list as new. For example, I ordered two of these drives https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KPL474H. They were both sold as new and arrived in sealed anti-static bags. First one was DOA and the second one's SMART data showed power-on hours of ~3 years!

I reported to Amazon and wrote a review but they took my review down for calling it fraud.

Totally fine to give citations to driverless cars, but can we also start issuing citations to human drivers again too? Its pretty wild out there
johnboiles··on Show HN: Sonatino – small audio dev board based on ESP32-S3
Purchased! I've recently been poking around with two audio-related esp32 things I might use this for: Home Assistant Assist via ESPHome, and audio streaming with esp-adf (Espressif's official audio development framework). Excited to try out your board! With the high quality DAC I'll probably end up making this into an audio streamer board for our office.
johnboiles··on Number of Pedestrians Killed by Drivers Remains Vexingly High
> While SFPD has recently met its Vision Zero target of issuing half of the traffic citations for the top five causes of collisions, it appears that this is largely a result of fewer citations overall — not an increased commitment to Focus on the Five enforcement, Mandelman’s office said.

Ugh incentives y'all.

johnboiles··on Number of Pedestrians Killed by Drivers Remains Vexingly High
I bike commute in SF and haven't seen any traffic enforcement at all since before COVID. I see a moving violation of some sort nearly every single day I bike (usually running red lights or right turn on red where prohibited by big glowing signs).

Apparently SF is issuing 10x fewer tickets than before COVID and 100x fewer tickets than 10 years ago: https://web.archive.org/web/20240518142347/https://www.sfchr...

johnboiles··on 8GB RAM on M3 MacBook Pro 'Analogous to 16GB' on PCs, Claims Apple
This was my experience. Before the M1 Pro/Max I needed to do some Apple Silicon porting for a project, so I bought the low end M1 MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM. It was amazing how well it kept up, and was generally much more snappy than my older Intel Mac with 16GB RAM. I hadn't had <16GB of RAM in years. I didn't expect it to, but it became my daily driver for several months until the Max came out.
