john_minsk··on In internal memo, Apple addresses concerns around new Photo scanning features
Question to tech savvy population of HN:

If I browse internet and accidentally load a page with all images from this CSAM database => are these images automatically saved somewhere on my filesystem on iOS? So if this software was scanning not only iCloud but all images on my phone I would be reported automatically?

Hypothetical question.

john_minsk··on In internal memo, Apple addresses concerns around new Photo scanning features
Why wouldn't they show a pop-up on the phone highlighting which images may be problematic and that report is being sent to the government? I might change my mind on uploading these things to my iCloud. Can't wait for all examples of false positives that will surface.

Why wouldn't they delete them directly, but rather send report to the government?

Why wouldn't they go even further and if image detected on the webpage that is problematic => It doesn't allow it to get to my filesystem either, so that I don't get into trouble if for some reason police decides to search my laptop.

All relevant questions. Answer is the only one: so that when police knocks on your door you were blissfully unaware.

Quite honestly this is all too sad. Again this argument about CP that everyone will buy, but which doesn't work in the wild. There are some bad people out there, but if these people are into buying or creating CP => they will rarely upload it into iCloud. Especially now, when everyone knows Apple is looking for it. So they will go even deeper into hiding, while everyone else will have to live with devices that are spying on them...

john_minsk··on On Apple’s “Expanded Protections for Children” – A Personal Story
Hmmm. So after past 5 years posing as best privacy-focused company out there we get this? Major red flag.

I want my home server to work as my personal cloud: music, photos, movies, files collections. And everything should be end-to-end encrypted so that no one has any way to look inside it. With 5G and broadband this might even work without much optimization. Someone knows about such solution?

john_minsk··on On Time, Money and Health
What about children? This can turn your 20s-30s priorities around. Childfree is an option, but I'm super not sure about it.
john_minsk··on On Time, Money and Health
I kind of agree. When I was young and could not afford anything - I was dreaming about all luxury things I saw in the movies and travelling the globe.

Now I tried it and don't see the reason to. I mean there is no rush. Regular house/flat will give you 80% of value of multimillion dollar mansion will give. Cars are all +- the same given that you can drive only so fast. Travel when you need to work is too hectic but if you are retired it can be very inexpensive. In order to push past this middle level it is not clear what to do i.e. difference between 1M and 10M is not that big in terms of your lifestyle but ability to accumulate so much is completely different beast.

The true happiness comes from other things: friends, family, free time, the business you love, curiosity etc.

UPD: This is all of course if you were able to get into good career/small business path. If you are stuck with some low-pay job you still have some work to do to jump to another industry.

john_minsk··on The Well-Tempered Traveler
Is this in California? Never occurred to me that this is the case there:)

I’ve spent a fair bit of time in Middle East and it is sunset at 6-7pm pretty much throughout the year. And I must say when I traveled north to Netherlands/Germany in the summer - the experience was almost psychedelic.

My dream is to be able one day to travel between north and south to follow longer day time(and summer) throughout the year.

Interesting. So you think they are not even working on making this thing faster? Shame. Windows needs some performance boost.
john_minsk··on What would you pay for autonomous driving? Volkswagen hopes $8.50 per hour
That's totally different scenario in my view. This is like comparing robot-vacuum and fully fledged android housekeeper. If it can do 100 and 1 thing - sure you can pay 10k for extra value.

TBH it is hard to believe that it is required to have 8 $/h to have autonomous vehicle. Once we have the technology Google will build efficient data center with custom chips and the price will go down to X $/month. On top of it - I think the model will have to run locally, so it would make sense to pay upfront for extra hardware they put in your car and not that much for maintenance.

We are just not there yet, we don't have autonomous driving - we have better driver assistants.

john_minsk··on EU bans Belarusian airlines from European skies
It is the only one.

The problem is that EU itself is closed due to COVID(we can't get visas renewed) + we have internal ban on transit through ground borders due to COVID(but most likely to prevent people from moving out permanently)

So essentially, with this ban it is hard to escape if situation goes south.

john_minsk··on Crazy New Ideas
So during their onboarding process they have a survey about your usage patterns. One of the questions is about speed of switching between tabs and one of the answers is "Tabs are switched very fast (<1 sec)"

I'm sorry, but 1 sec is not fast...

What is this space used for? Generally curious
john_minsk··on What is Chia cryptocurrency and why is it bad news for hard drives?
The way I understand bitcoin is the following:

1. Main advantage of it is that it can't be stopped.

2. Since it can't be stopped - it allows to evade any regulation from the government or the bank. If it replaces banking system - you can move around the globe with your capital and spend it the way you like. This is not the case at the moment

3. Bitcoin could become a currency if it was fast enough and fees were low enough. Which was quickly discovered to be not true since the complexity increased, transactions slowed down and no one agreed to upgrade block size since this is additional costs to mining.

4. Since bitcoin now is slow and expensive industry found another way to use it - store long term value without risk of government to inflate currency and steal your money. point#2 is still valid. Recent surge in prices is caused by this reasoning in my mind.

5. Since everyone earned enormous amount of money in past months people will keep hodling expecting the growth to continue, but it will slow down. Once it slows down - people will start selling to get their profits and there will be huge correction.

6. In the very long run bitcoin can go through multiple cycles of such growth and decline and either will become more predictable (community will come up with some rules on how bitcoin fees and speeds are regulated etc.) or will stay this a bit more dangerous but a but more free way to transfer value geographically and also over time.

It probably could be more dangerous to world governments if point #3 realized

john_minsk··on Facebook slow to address political manipulation outside wealthy, western nations
Facebook shouldn't moderate anything;

Facebook content should drop in value to where it belongs: personal updates from friends and funny videos;

People need to start voting on actual policies each politician/party proposes, not based on Facebook information from unknown accounts.

Will that be enough?

john_minsk··on Epic Games Began Planning 'Project Liberty' Lawsuit Against Apple Two Years Ago

john_minsk··on How I cut GTA Online loading times by 70%
I heard that Chrome team had this KPI from very early on - how much time it takes for Chrome to load and it stayed the same to date. i.e. they can't make any changes that will increase this parameter. Very clever if you ask me

john_minsk··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea
one more thing 5 minutes later: I was travelling a lot past 4 years and would be great:

Buy international insurance within an app and have a list of local hospitals I can go to

Be able to "download" integration with local pharmacies like it was with maps.me These can be sold. If I'm in India and got Delhi Belly I would pay 2-5 USD to find nearest pharmacy/hospital or order drugs to my hotel

john_minsk··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea
I didn't get it. He starts as if this is b2c kind of business, but then shows screenshots with service aimed at drug researchers.

If it is b2c: make an app for the phone.

Screen1: human body, where you can choose places where you feel unrest.

Screen2: describe what is wrong

Screen3: "based on your answers and your geolocation you can get these 3 remedies which are safe" or if something extreme is going on "please see the doctor, in the mean time you can use aspirin to relieve your pain"

*I usually call mom when I have headache, temperature or diarrhea cause I constantly forget which one should I take. I'm 30:-( I would use such app for these hints. For anything more serious I would go to doctor and wouldn't self medicate.

Monetization(Hard): Subscription for extra features like tracking of drug dosages and keeping track of your home stock. Would probably be beneficial to someone who takes a lot of drugs all the time.

Monetization2(Medium hard): deals with local pharmacies to be able to provide recommendations where to buy a specific drug advised by the app.

Based on screenshots what he built is b2b app for doctors?

john_minsk··on New superconductor microprocessor yields a substantial boost in efficiency
Since it can't go forever - it is time to update its definition to reflect what we are doing with computing now - adding cores and improving energy efficiency. No?
john_minsk··on New superconductor microprocessor yields a substantial boost in efficiency
Both are important and 1 can be even more useful. Use 1 to easier build very complex systems. Once they are working and you are selling them - optimize. Without#1 you can't get #2

john_minsk··on Scammers siphoned $36B in fraudulent unemployment payments from US
It can be anonymous and you will have to present an evidence that certain transaction belongs to you only when the situation requires it. Government can ensure information split at the time of registration and then dictate that only warrant can allow to link the 2.

Anyway, the ability of governments to identify their citizens is technological problem. Overall during our history we agreed to potential of being identified by governments. Tech brings new tools to them. I wish they could adopt them quicker.

Overall we shouldn't be afraid of new tech and more reliability. But what we need is the system that will be future proof in terms of balance between individual and big entities even if their technological ability to identify you is near perfect.

john_minsk··on CD Projekt Conference Call with the Management Board [pdf] (Dec 14)
History shows that great games will be successful no matter what. Something like World of Warcraft is successful simply because product is great, not because it was released at the right moment. May be CDP had reasons to do what they did - I'm not questioning that. But what it shows - CDP is just another game studio. I would like to see some company to go Apple-way, price their games accordingly, take their time and earn some reputation, but release games that are great time after time. CDP gave this hope after Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk PR but failed to deliver. The game is still good, so they might be still on the path. We will see in the next iteration. May be Blizzard makes comeback and releases something epic again. It takes someone like Steve Jobs to pull this off and may be in game industry it is tricky.

Anyway, this is how I think about it.

john_minsk··on CD Projekt Conference Call with the Management Board [pdf] (Dec 14)

john_minsk··on Goodreads plans to retire API access, disables existing API keys
And who is going be able to provide for all this shit? I'll tell you who - FAANG. Good luck starting your company when all of the above is a law! I've had enough clicks on GDPR's "OK" buttons. What did it change?

All this crying about tracking - how else the owner of the place can make product better? If I own a store - I can see where people go, how they shop, how they walk around, which basket size they prefer, what they buy. If I don't collect data on my website - I can't THINK about how to make my service better. I can only GUESS. What about data collections for simple functionality - like, when you come back to the half-filled form and I remember the values you already submitted by matching your cookies. Are you against this as well?

Sorry, but if this is the alternative - I would rather have Google know everything I do online and hope that they honestly don't store data on my Incognito browsing. If they do - worse for them.

john_minsk··on Falling Out of Love with Apple, Part 3: Content and Censorship
I just paid for 12 months worth of Skype subscription which I have used for just 2 calls back in January.

I want ALL my subscriptions to go through Apple Pay and App store.

Once I subscribed to New York times. The newspaper that was advertised to me for years in all Hollywood movies as a place where honesty and freedom are of highest priority. I had to spend an hour on a phone with their representatives to cancel it refusing to accept discount or a free subscription.

I don't trust many other companies. Especially if all my interactions with them are virtual and they are not specialized in information technology. At least big tech is quite rich to afford to think about users.

Each bank got their app and added some obvious features there: pay for utilities, for your phone etc. I want more progress here. I want to be able to see all my fees upfront in a clear format. I want to know my credit score. I want to be able to take this credit score to different organizations. etc. etc.

Big hope that fin tech will blow it up, but unfortunately start ups didn't deliver. There are some successful ones, but I think finance is too regulated for them to have a shot at a serious scale. Apple and Google have a shot at that and they will create a road for smaller companies.

The situation in Belarus is bad. And believe me I know. I was concerned as well about my device security. But to be honest at the end of the day it can't be Apple's problem. Belarussian government must be replaced by Belarussian people and Apple has nothing to do with that. And on top of that - what choice do I have. Android devices in Russia are preinstalled with Russian software while Apple's aren't. That's more important sign for me.

I would guess that there is some legal problem with even referencing original app as an inspiration. Paying bounty for it would be even worse.

If Apple were able to copy some app and in return mention your name as a co-author of some sort/tip you - that would probably be a life changing experience for most developers out there.
