It won’t work?
As simple as that.
The problem, for me at least, appears where some legal rights damage technological usage.
How many times my Netflix downloads will “expire”? Is this milk or something? Why do they need to expire? Sorry, but I refuse to understand…
The solution to me is simple: build service with more relevant and neutral results.
That is if people actually need it. I, for example, just subscribed to Endel (AI generated ambient music) which looks even worse from the standpoint of the author.
How are you solving this issue?
A. You start your life at this level based on what life your family can afford. You can't control it, you can just adapt. You get used to it and that is your base level. You have some "needs" that were not possible at this level and this is your ambition level.
B. Depending on a lot of factors you can go in any direction from level A. If you have a lot of motivation - you will work hard and if you are lucky - you will get to higher levels, if not - you can even degrade compared to the level your parents are in. Most of the things that you dreamed of as a child will not be at the billionaire level. Probably most things will be at the level C, which is slightly higher than what your parents had (depends on a lot of factors like your character etc.)
C. This is the level where you probably fulfilled all your child dreams and wants. You can afford everything your parents could + something on top of it. This is usually the easiest level to get to - you can get here by exploiting tools of level B given to you by your parents + smart work from your side. While you fulfil your child dreams you start become smarter as well and some of the crazy child dreams, which seemed genius (buy 100 Lego boxes and build the most epic Star Wars fleet among my friends) now seem irrelevant and is not worth the resources. If you haven't reached level C - additional resources will bring you happiness doesn't matter if this level is at 75000 or 1M. If you reached it you have a decision to make.
D. Next level after C. It is much more harder and riskier to reach it. You might need to sacrifice your family, time and life to reach it. But all your basic wants and needs are met. So now you face a few great options:
1. You can keep increasing your needs and now your level C becomes your level B and D becomes your new level C. This comes with the risk to lose your ground at the level C and get back to Level B or lower. You become unhappy again before you reach your new level C.
2. You can stop raising your needs, give it some time and/or hard work and cement your position at level C. Diversify, deleverage, lower risk profile etc. This works toward your feeling of security, which increases happiness, but not to the extent of new needs.
3. You can do #1+#2 and reach level #2 faster with higher risk.
As you can see at the level D you are looking for a mindset change. Before that you had a clear goal of "why do I need more money", but when you are at the level D you have to come up with new goals. This is the most exciting place to be in my mind.
See Anton Kreil's "Build and Own Your Own Infrastructure" - this talk changed my perspective on my personal financial goals.
I'm watching very closely at the issue, that with iTunes I was able to sync files to iphone/ipod/ipad and SEE THE PROGRESS BAR. Since iTunes was discontinued and we were forced to use Finder for the same task - you no longer see any progress bar when syncing files to one of the apps on your device.
From 0 to 10, what would HN rate this UX mistake?
Here is a thread on Apple forums: https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/130051
Here is Apple's official guidelines: https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guideline...
"Don’t make people sit around staring at a static screen waiting for your app to load content or perform lengthy data processing operations. Use progress indicators to let people know your app hasn't stalled and to give them some idea of how long they’ll be waiting."
Go figure.
20% daily retention? Daily usage?
If I have an app on my phone that I open once a quarter and it delivers me a ton of value => I will happily pay for it monthly.
The travel planning does not provide such value at least to me. I’m already spending a ton of money on hotels, planes and transport as well as I do my research before the trip. Somewhere along this journey and from this money I spend on hotels and stuff there should be this service to help you plan your trip.
Update: i remember maps.me had this in their model - they wanted to sell you guides on the platform that you can then go through with GPS. Nice idea, but it had to be subscription so that user could explore these options as he prefers, not after buying the guide…
This should be a lesson to all those corporate-like structures in public sector where they use common enterprise tactics of middle management to say things in the non-specific way so that later down the road they can cover their asses.
They had to be very specific, don’t lie, simply say about things they are not sure about “we don’t know” (hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin etc.) and do tests, never say “vaccines are safe”, but say they are 100000 times less dangerous than disease etc.
And then we could trust every word they just say as we know that they are very aware of what they are saying and they haven’t lied to us in a lot of situations before.
They should govern, but instead they play politics… wtf really.
But In my view it is unscientific and as a result I can’t trust that the rest of the program of passports is designed properly and based on facts.
You can still have nice features around it: separate list at the end of scroll with my old movies/shows (may be with number of times I watched it?). Once new seasons released send them all the way to to the top etc.
And I will be able to discover something new. At the moment it is cluttered with things I don't want to watch so lately I was not happy with Netflix at all.
You should see such patterns in your data.
If anything I can see confirmations that natural COVID-19 immunity is on par with COVID-19 vaccines with a lot of outside factors that can influence outcomes in either side.
However, it seems that immune system is very complex and does not work with only antibodies. Even though Natural ~ Pfizer on KPIs these studies usually measure, there are other mechanisms like T-Cell immunity, which are most definitely trained during actual disease, but which might not be activated by narrowly focused vaccines and are hard to measure so we don't know how they work on the wide scale.
For example here[0], blood plasma seems to be different between natural vs vaccinated.
At the same time this rhetoric undermines credibility of institutions and individuals that project such ideas. It seems that in one case the approach is strictly rational and in another we turn our eyes at facts and don't want to believe that our bodies are able to produce something better then scientist at Big Pharma.
People who got COVID-19 already lost in this global roulette game since they are the ones that already absorbed the highest risk in this game. The upper side of it is that if you got out the other way - you get better overall immunity for further reinfections. And now authorities want to push them even further, take even more risk(minimal, but still) which is not necessary based on what data says.

P.S. sorry for rant.
Human comes to work => docks/AirPlays their system to external monitor => does work in browsers/office apps. We are pretty close to this reality tbh. Mostly software is a limiting factor.
As for computer pros...we probably will be forced to use some other vendors(sad) or use remote systems for compute tasks while using our phone/tablet as thin client.
Thanks Apple for not jumping into that train just yet!
