john61··on Kolab 3.1 alpha released with iRony
you do not lock your door at home because the police can open it?
john61··on Never Trust Facebook
Well for me, sharing my beliefs with friends makes me happy. If someone does not share or respects my beliefs, then there is no sharing and understanding each other which is the essence of a friendship.

No matter how strange your beliefs are, you will always find people that think similar. The world is very diverse.

It seems that FB even changes the fundamental meaning of a friend. Which is a shame and a lack of social culture.

john61··on Never Trust Facebook
If you are not going to be happy if you are not honest to your beliefs.
john61··on Never Trust Facebook
People that don't understand that I do not like FB are not my friends.
john61··on Mozilla and Partners Prepare to Launch First Firefox OS Smartphones
Freedom is not only the selling point to customers but also and more importantly to the telephone companies. It seems that they appreciate that freedom a lot. They have the marketing power to make the phones a success in the mass market.
john61··on Mozilla and Partners Prepare to Launch First Firefox OS Smartphones
Don't you think that the NSA debacle makes ordinary people more and more people sensitive about there freedom?

Trust is the baseground of any purchase.

john61··on Mozilla and Partners Prepare to Launch First Firefox OS Smartphones
I've played with the low power developer Firefox Geekphones and the UI was very responsive.

Also an iPhone is the opposite of a free phone, so this is no competition for Firefox OS.

john61··on Why Enterprise Software Sucks: 6 Years Later
Enterprise Software is hard because the modeled enterprises are complex and very different to each other.

This is a completely different beast than your toy App on your phone.

In medicine excess growth is called cancer
john61··on Cognitive Overhead, Or Why Your Product Isn’t As Simple As You Think
I have 3.2 dioptres and have no problem at all with the hasselblad manual focus.
john61··on The W3C's plan for DRM in HTML5 is a betrayal for all web users
The type of content that would be siloed behind DRM does not fit in a free peer to peer network of equitable peers anyway. TV is probably a better medium for that.

The Web is not a one way irrigation medium. It is about freedom. DRM is the opposite of that. Freedom is more important than money.

john61··on The W3C's plan for DRM in HTML5 is a betrayal for all web users
One should never deal with the bad guys.
john61··on Cognitive Overhead, Or Why Your Product Isn’t As Simple As You Think
A interface that makes things easy is comfortable and probably profitable, since most people are lazy. But convenience does not correlate with quality.
john61··on Cognitive Overhead, Or Why Your Product Isn’t As Simple As You Think
I make better photos with my old manual Hasselblad from the 1970ies. Because the interface has massive cognitive overhead. No automatic at all, all manual, clunky, complicated. It forces me to think slowly. Therefore it gives my head and heart the time and deep concentration about the picture I want to make. This leads to much better photos.
john61··on Top Reasons I like Postgres Over SQL Server
Yes, because the great value of freedom is independent of the company size.
john61··on Top Reasons I like Postgres Over SQL Server
freedom is more valuable than features
john61··on Top Reasons I like Postgres Over SQL Server
Well he missed the main point:

Posgresql is free software.

And therefore for example no company can force you into their lock in for their profit and your loss.

No targeting does not work in my case. Not at all. The targeting does not get better. But I surf with JS disabled when possible (you'd be surprised how many sites actually work _better_ with JS turned off) and ghostery. I use duckduckgo and do not use any Google Service or Facebook, Twitter. And yes I still enjoy a rich online live and have a lot of friends online and offline.
john61··on My divorce from Google - One year later
No Linux is not a trap, because it is Free Software. Freedom is the contrary to a trap.
john61··on My divorce from Google - One year later
I did not say that it is possible to escape all of them. But if you limit the leaked data, their profile is useless. I do not get very well targeted ads. That is a good sign that they do not have a good profile of me. But I never used gmail or g+ for example.
john61··on My divorce from Google - One year later
It is called a trap.
john61··on My divorce from Google - One year later
The power comes from combination. Even very small bits of information in your email, photo tags, searches can build a very precise picture of your personality if there are a lot of them. You can not control the small information bits that go to Google if you are using their tools. This is a dangerous illusion. The solution is to limit the overall amount of information leaking and diversity. Therefore not using Google or other well known data mining companies at all. And yes it is possible.
john61··on My divorce from Google - One year later
It is not about ads. It's about personal private data. For ads, anonymous targeting would suffice. No one can garantee that this personal private data is used for ads only. It is usefull for a lot of ugly things. And therefore it will (is?) used for them.
john61··on Living Alone May Be Hazardous to Your Health
That is why todays homo egoisticus will die out in the end.
john61··on Of Lisp Macros and Washing Machines (2011)
Since some inhabitants of one country think their country is the world I can imagine which one of the 194 countries you think of.

The answer therefore is yes.

john61··on Of Lisp Macros and Washing Machines (2011)
Another example: The advent of the car or plane did not reduce the live time spent on traveling but expanded the ways. People and their priorities and motivations for giving a slice of their live time to a particular kind of activity do not change greatly because of technology.
john61··on Of Lisp Macros and Washing Machines (2011)
no this is a fact
john61··on Of Lisp Macros and Washing Machines (2011)
It depends. There are rumors that allegies of our days are caused by exaggerated hygiene.

You have to wait of few hundred years to see all the consequences of technology in retrospect.

john61··on Of Lisp Macros and Washing Machines (2011)
Washing Machines did not save time!

This is because with the advent of these machines also our hygiene habits changed. We wash a lot more than before, and therefore there is no time saving but cleaner clothes.

The same is true for computers. They did not save time, they changed the way we treat information. We have a lot more than before to process.

john61··on Introduction to Guitar
One difference is that each musical instrument has its own personality like each person/player. Classical, acoustic and electrical guitar are totally different. It is important that _you_ like the instrument. That is a matter of personal taste. Important is the joy to play. Therefore pick that up that you like most, whatever this is.
