The main idea of Emacs is unlike other ide's it can be customized greatly to specific users, but Doom Emacs seems to be a ready made configuration. It seems to be opposite of the main idea behind Emacs, yet Doom Emacs seems to be getting popular. Is there anything i am missing.

john4532452··on Ask HN: What tech companies allow all employees to be remote?
I guess in few months the question will be "What tech companies does not allow fully remote ?
john4532452··on Atlassian tells employees they can work from home forever
I don't get how WFH is related to not caring(or caring) about blue collar employees. If anything the demand for housing reduces and the rent goes down.
john4532452··on Remote work is not necessarily a good thing for the worker
For middle manager's WFH is terrible. They can't account their time for what they did. For everyone else its great.

For parents its great. Parents get to spend commute time with childrens.

For developers its just amazing. I can't stress this enough. You get uninterrupted time to design or coding in the zone

For hardware startups it might not work, but software its already proven by wordpress, gitlab and many others.

Budding engineers can always think before asking senior devs and learn how to ask questions.

Most importantly WFH is great to fight against age bias. For any one over 30 this is huge win.

john4532452··on Remote work is not necessarily a good thing for the worker
Considering ageism in the software industry Remote work feels like a boon. Not to mention the uninterrupted productive work you can do. Remote work is bad only for the middle managers who don't know how to account for their time.

john4532452··on Ex-Googler's startup comes out of stealth with simple, clever robot design

On YouTube at least the user has the option to search and subscribe the videos, there by controlling what is shown, it is not the same with TikTok

> killed thousands, mostly fellow blacks

Freedom is not free, that's a given.

Based on past experience in understanding other cultures as an outsider, i am pretty sure there is something else for disliking Mandela which can only be explained by a person from within who understands the different sections of the South Africa. Can someone shed light on this ? The above argument is very weak.

I don't know why this should not be opposed, stalinist may be.

"Nelson Mandela" in the same line as "Genghis Khan". I am puzzled. That doesn't seem right. Citation Needed.

> Ah yes, let's pretend you can't tell someone is from south Asia or Caucasian.

Its not about the way people look, its about their belief, Islam prohibits very seriously about blasphemy and that's why even the intelligent people can not help but comply. The same is not true about other religions.

john4532452··on Ask HN: How do you read long PDFs?
I was a polar bookshelf user until i discovered emacs pdf-tools mode https://github.com/politza/pdf-tools .
john4532452··on Ask HN: How do you read long PDFs?
Anyone spending a lot of time on pdf's should definitely checkout emacs pdf-tools mode https://github.com/politza/pdf-tools . In the past i was recommending polar app, but emacs pdf-tools trumps in comparison. Emacs pdf-tools mode has lesser memory footprint is much faster and above all does not have restrict any features.
