joeskyyy··on Another GitHub outage in the same day
Long time GitLab fan myself. The platform itself is quite solid, and GitLab CI is extremely straightforward but allows for a lot of complexity if you need it. They have registries as well, though admittedly the permission stuff around them is a bit wonky. But it definitely works and integrates nicely when you use everything all in one!
joeskyyy··on Kubernetes is deprecating Docker runtime support
Kubernetes manages many types of containers, Docker containers just happen to be the most popular (or at least I'd venture to guess). But Kubernetes for a while has supported a few container runtimes (: Here's some k8s docs on a few: https://kubernetes.io/docs/setup/production-environment/cont...
joeskyyy··on Running a full desktop environment on a Kindle (2019)
Yeah but can it run kubernetes? /s
joeskyyy··on Dockerfile Security Best Practices
Soooo... docker? haha

edit: I joke, I love what containers accomplish, and working with Docker has been a joy (:

joeskyyy··on Say goodbye to hold music
I used LucyPhone back in the day and it was great, but sadly it looks like it's no longer around, would love to have something like this as well. FastCustomer still exists but hasn't been updated in over 5 years...
joeskyyy··on Kubectl – Configuration Guide
Agreed. With autocomplete I find myself being able to make those long commands painless while making sure I'm being explicit. Only took me one time running the wrong command against the wrong cluster to drill that one into my brain forever haha
joeskyyy··on Oculus: Hand Tracking Updates
Small update for you: I did this on my AmpliFi HD mesh network and it worked pretty flawlessly! I tried it in multiple places around my house and didn't experience lag, exposure of apps I tried was super limited cause I got distracted by other things, but it's really nice! I also tried the Oculus Link method, and honestly the Virtual Desktop experience was surprisingly better? Maybe it's all in my head because it's all wireless and feels like magic haha

Loading up the SideQuest APK was super easy and has now led me down the awesome rabbit hole of poking at Oculus dev :D

joeskyyy··on Oculus: Hand Tracking Updates
Wait really?! I was wondering why I would want to fork over so much money for the app, but having this as a possibility changes everything. Thanks for the heads up :D
joeskyyy··on Show HN: Dashboard for tracking insider trading at S&P 500 companies
Ahahaha, I thought you were merely joking... apparently not!
joeskyyy··on Apple Pay on pace to account for 10% of global card transactions
Apply Pay in stores is amazing and all, but holy cow the integration when you're using it to pay on your phone while using Safari or something (add in Sign in with Apple) is astounding. It's so smooth, no crazy pages or anything to go through, just click, scan, done. I'd love to see more places adopt it on the Mac store fronts as well.
joeskyyy··on Dynamic Route53 records for AWS auto scaling groups with Terraform
You can also use SSM and session manager to get a similar experience for those instances: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/systems-manager/latest/userguide...

I haven't had to manage SSH keys in a long time ;)

With this I just have a bash function for my various environments (e.g. dev = dssm) where I provide in the instance ID giving me issues if I really need to log into the server.

e.g.

function dssm { aws --region us-west-2 --profile my-dev-profile-name ssm start-session --target $1 }

Then:

dssm i-abcdef123456

And I'm dropped into a shell. SSM Session manager is far from perfect, but it gets the job done, and is fully auditable, gets logged (including commands ran), and best of all works with SAML IAM profiles right out the gate. No more sharing keys, no more managing keys, it's great!

joeskyyy··on The Weight I Carry
> Exercise to get healthy, treat the metabolism boost as a bonus. Exercise does not cancel out foods

Thank you! Exercise should be completely supplemental to overall health, not to lose weight. The amount of times I've seen people eat an awful meal while trying to lose weight because they "worked out extra hard" is astonishing.

Losing weight is almost completely related to what you put in your body. While you can certainly lose weight from exercise, it's by far not the most profound way to do so.

Congrats on your weight loss by the way, former fat kid myself, I know it's not an easy process and keeping it off is just as hard!

joeskyyy··on Neo4j nabs $80M Series E as graph database tech flourishes
All of this. It's impossible to run Neo4j out of the box in HA in a sane way. Not to mention, you can't even run a reliable backup of the datastore without shutting down the database entirely... unless you pay for their archaic pricing model for enterprise.
joeskyyy··on Rancher 2.0 GA
Heavy rancher user here for managing Kubernetes clusters, the Rancher team has been an absolute dream to work with, fast to fix issues, and have created a super solid product. Very excited for the migration to 2.x from 1.x (:
joeskyyy··on Improved Docker Container Integration with Java 10
A container is not a VM (at least in the traditional sense). The advantages of running java inside of a container is that you can ship all of your things as one artifact, and run it on a bunch of different infrastructures, with all it's dependencies packaged together. So rather than needing to use something to ensure your properties are configured correctly, and all your passwords are where they need to be, and all your other bits and such are in place, you can pack it all in a container and run it anywhere (Well... "anywhere" being a bit of a stretch, but you get the idea haha)
joeskyyy··on Intermediate Vim tips
Right there with you. While the power of vim is to be able to customize it, I hate getting used to something and then not being able to use it everywhere. I've managed to get by with no extra .vimrc things whatsoever for quite some time :D Does it take me longer to do some things compared to using what's in this article? Yup. Does it prevent me from doing good, and still relatively quick, work? Nope.

When I want the power of formatting and and all the goods, I use visual editors with no shame or remorse (VS Code is my current poison of choice).

joeskyyy··on DNS for Service Discovery in HAProxy
Easy there, tiger. Not doing well for the brand of your team.
joeskyyy··on Postmates laid off all its city managers yesterday
Funny enough, I did this with Postmates once.

I ordered a meal which Postmates estimated to be ~$16. When they finally billed me it was charged at $32.

When I contacted them they told me that the prices reflected aren't always accurate, but I'd say a price going up double is a bit of a goof on their part. They were unwilling to refund the payment, and so I called my bank and explained the situation. The bank associate on the phone took care of the charge back as a measure against them.

After that, I've never ordered from postmates again. I get that prices can vary, I'd forgive it to a certain degree. But double the price? Nope.

joeskyyy··on Blue Apron Tumbles After Losing Customers in Second Quarter
Platejoy[1] does this. I did their trial a while back and they've got some great meal ideas. One thing I like about this, is that there's no potential waste compared to Blue Apron and the like. Also being able to specify dietary restrictions and stuff while getting a nice grocery list was pretty great (:

While yes, I can spend time researching things, picking things out, etc. all for free, sometimes I do just want the experience to be catered. Add on top of that an automated, weekly/bi-weekly grocery list was pretty damn cool. Otherwise, I typically end up making the same boring meals I already know.

I didn't continue with them because my boyfriend is a pretty amazing cook, so I just leave cooking to him instead haha

joeskyyy··on Summer Reading List
I'm in the same camp. It's hard for me to focus on an audiobook, even though I listen to plenty of podcasts and am able to focus quite easily on those. I really do want to read more, it's just finding the time ):
joeskyyy··on AWS is having widespread issues
Thank you for a good laugh to start my day haha
joeskyyy··on How AWS Cloud is demolishing the cult of youth
> When you sit down with one of the AWS engineering teams you’re sitting down with grownups. At a guess median age would be 40-45, someone like Andi Gutmans, now 41, one of the original creators of PHP, who now runs Search and New NoSQL for the firm.

Ha... All the senior managers, directors, and VPs at Amazon may be in their 40+ years, but everyone who's actually building the day-to-day code isn't. On any of the teams I worked for, the average age was probably ~24, and that was without interns.

This isn't me dismissing the wisdom, skills, and benefits of having seasoned tech talent, but it's definitely not that way at AWS.

joeskyyy··on Why I Stopped Using Multiple Monitors
I'm definitely on the one monitor train. For the longest time, I didn't even use an external monitor, just the one on my laptop. I like having a consistent experience when working from the office, or working remote. In this way, my flow is always the same, no matter where I'm working at :D
joeskyyy··on Tech Interview Torture Chamber
> Purge the room of erasers. This forces the candidate to erase with their hands, reminding them that mistakes will be smeared all over them.

I actually had to laugh out loud at my desk at this. My office is absolutely guilty of terrible markers and lack of erasers.

All in good fun folks. All in good fun.

joeskyyy··on Anagram Scoring
Kind of related: The anagrams problem is probably my favourite interview question to dole out. Always shows completely different ways of thinking and normalising things.
joeskyyy··on A Hacker News clone built with NX
Project wise: it's neat that something like this was built. I always think it's cool that people transform something they may use every day to represent something/learn about something.

Usability wise: After using HN for so long, this just hurts to use and wait for the JS to render ):

joeskyyy··on Female shark learns to reproduce without males after years alone
Probably stupid question, but I'll ask since others may have the same question: Would all the offspring in this case be female?

I'm blanking on my old biology knowledge that's stored somewhere in the cold storage of my brain haha

joeskyyy··on San Antonio: Google Fiber on Hold
50x30?! hahahaha I used to live in San Antonio. San Antonio is MASSIVE land wise, and very sprawling. There's absolutely no density problems what-so-ever.

Ridiculous.

joeskyyy··on MongoDB Apocalypse Is Here as Ransom Attacks Hit 10,000 Servers
> The attacks don't target all MongoDB databases, but only those left accessible via the Internet and without a password on the administrator account

Well now I don't feel sorry for these people :|

joeskyyy··on Dear Jeff Bezos: Is a suicide attempt enough, or do you still need more data?
Amazon benefits provide counseling services like most large companies do.
