joemaller1··on Homebrew 2.0.0 released
I didn't know Windows support was on the roadmap. Homebrew has been a critical piece of my macOS toolkit for nearly a decade but I've been working cross-platform more lately so this could be great for me. But what about Chocolatey?
joemaller1··on Self-driving cars will "cruise" to avoid paying to park
This is a fist stage solution. The second stage is that the vehicles wander off to find something useful to do. The entire idea of parking and parking lots can be eliminated with some clever pooling of resources and predictive modeling.

The environmental benefits of replacing fields of asphalt and cement with greenery and open space will be huge.

joemaller1··on Verizon Suffers Cloud Data Leak Exposing Data on Millions of Customers (2017)
That kind of matters
joemaller1··on Google Assistant iOS update lets you say ‘Hey Siri, OK Google’
I was hoping for this, it's the first thing I thought to try after Shortcuts was released. Now we just need to get Alexa and Cortana onboard too. Hello, Amazon and Microsoft?

"Hey Siri, ask (Google|Alexa|Cortana)..."

Put them all behind the same interface, on the same device. Let us figure out which one actually works best -- though I'd rather have a "team" of digital assistants.

joemaller1··on Netflix to let viewers pick how TV episodes and movies will end
lol. I clicked through hoping this would be a way to disable autoplay and just end a show with the credits then dump back to the menus. The current "here's what's next" feels like force-feeding and I always dive for the remote to disable the post-show stuff.
joemaller1··on Prepare for changes to macOS Server 5.7.1
Our SMB design office is media-heavy, with lots of very large raw photo shoots and source video files. We've been using Apple Server for file sharing for a long time (running on Mac minis). All other services have been migrated or abandoned. At some point we need to switch to a Windows or Linux SMB server, cloud storage is still cost-prohibitive with the file sizes we're throwing around.

edit: File sharing was on Server.app, now it's just plain macOS-flavored SMB

joemaller1··on [dead]
I think the point is that in this purge of unpleasant or caustic geniuses, we're trading a meritocracy for mediocrity.
joemaller1··on An open governance model for the AMP Project
This doesn't change the bad smell. AMP feels like it's being forced on us to appease Google so sites will appear in search rankings.

The kerfuffle over React's licensing was different. React was a tool the community loved that was hamstrung by a license and opaque ties to Facebook. React's licensing switch was a liberation, this feels like appeasement.

One possible upside, this should provide some long-term stability -- something Google is generally not good at.

joemaller1··on Show HN: A decentralized index of banned users and where to find their content
Take sides or reveal bias?

If this gets traction it will be fascinating to see whose claims of systematic oppression are validated.

joemaller1··on Amazon’s Face Recognition Falsely Matched 28 Members of Congress with Mugshots
Things I want to know:

- Show us the side-by-side images of the false-positives. Are the matches plausible?

- What is the demographic distribution of the mugshot database? If the data is disproportionately biased, then that bias would be reflected in the false-positives. A casual skimming of some mughot websites shows a potentially significant racial bias.

joemaller1··on Microsoft announces Surface Go
Keyboard sold separately.

I wish they'd been more clear about that, almost all the promotional materials show the new Surface with the Type Cover (keyboard) and pen. It feels deceptive.

I was more interested when I thought $400 would get me a complete Windows tablet/ultrabook. At $650-700, it's nice but not nearly as compelling.

joemaller1··on Analysis of USB fan given to journalists at North Korea-Singapore Summit [pdf]
Just for the sake of curiosity, wouldn't it be possible to embed some sort of self-contained microdevice inside the motor? A USB "rubber-ducky" type device is kind of expected, piggybacking something else off the USB would be kind of interesting. Cheap throwaways like this wouldn't make sense target-wise, but it's fun to think about.
joemaller1··on Plastic recycling is a problem consumers can't solve
Whoever's first to figure out garbage mining will be phenomenally wealthy.
joemaller1··on FBI Recovers WhatsApp, Signal Data Stored on Michael Cohen’s BlackBerry
Most likely scenario.
joemaller1··on What, why and how of PHP Composer
The Composer project and Packagist are the catalysts which made it possible to drag PHP development out of the dark ages, but it's still got some rough edges that will eat a afternoon.

Recent example: Re-organizing namespaces and classes in an internal library. Losing my mind (doing everything right) until finally realizing Composer wasn't updating the autoloader to reflect changes to the lib's composer.json.

For something that works really well when it’s working, I have blown a lot of hours fighting with this stuff.

joemaller1··on Black: An uncompromising Python code formatter
Sometimes that sloppy code is your own code from yesterday or last week or last month. Tighten that feedback loop and sooner or later you're formatting on save and really happy about it.
joemaller1··on 12-year study will look at effects of universal basic income
Yes, you did read that:

Though there was an attempt to walkback or reframe that article:

joemaller1··on VS Code can do that?
You earned it
joemaller1··on Ajit Pai faces heat over proposal to take away poor people’s broadband plans
Uselessly partisan title.
joemaller1··on GitHub tweaks organization and project permissions
Organizations can now have outside collaborators. No mention of billing, but the cost of freelancers and other outside contributors was likely preventing many groups from switching to GitHub's per-seat pricing.

Seems like a move in the right direction. My company would love to move to per-seat pricing, but we work with a lot of freelance contractors and our costs would have been significantly higher.

joemaller1··on Ask HN: What foods do you eat to optimise brain function/problem solving skills?
Oats are mostly starch, starch is how plants store sugar. A bowl of oats has a fairly high GI score.
joemaller1··on Microsoft disables Spectre mitigations as Intel’s patches cause instability
Even more accurate: Microsoft joins HP, Dell, Lenovo, VMware and Red Hat in disabling Intel's buggy Spectre patch.

> HP, Dell, Lenovo, VMware, Red Hat and others had paused the patches and now Microsoft has done the same.

joemaller1··on Dr. Seuss’ arms race allegory
Not only was the Voom the "sub-atomic" power in the littlest cat's hat, it's eventual purpose was to cleanse the Red (pink) from the snow. The book was published in 1958, the cold war between the US and USSR was ramping up with over 100 combined nuclear tests in 1957 alone. Geisel was a vocal proponent of the US in WWII and eventually served in the US Army (as an animator).
joemaller1··on Union Is Formed at Los Angeles Times and Publisher Put on Leave

joemaller1··on Whole Foods employees reveal why stores are facing a crisis of food shortages
How much food was allowed to rot too keep the shelves stocked? I’m fine with a few empty shelves if it means less wasted food.
joemaller1··on About the security content of macOS High Sierra 10.13.2

joemaller1··on Show HN: Serverless logging to S3
Don’t assume the author made an informed but poor choice, they likely made something work with the tools they know or found. It’s really difficult to keep up with all the various AWS offerings if your not part of a team that’s immersed in it. Constructively suggesting alternates is welcome, I’ve got some new tools to read up on this morning.
joemaller1··on The Media Has Neglected Puerto Rico
The Media is very lazy, they'll cover anything they can drive to. Houston and Florida got tons of coverage because they were already there. Covering PR would mean significant personal discomfort for the reporters and crews, with no guarantee of being able to leave on their own schedule. There just don't seem to be many reporters of that ilk anymore.
joemaller1··on Sublime Text 3.0
Just buy another license.
joemaller1··on Future Pricing for Atlassian Cloud
If you've got 250 users, you've probably got someone to manage these costs too. If you've got 12-40 users and much tighter operating budgets, read-only users get kind of costly.
