joeframbach··on I ordered a box of boxes from The Packaging Wholesalers via Amazon.ca
If someone reuses one of these boxes to sell their items back to Amazon, Amazon will now have two Amazon barcodes on the box. We're back to square one here.
joeframbach··on “This is why I use ad blockers and a pi-hole server”
Without actually digging into it, I would assume that nytimes loads js assets from a third party, that's the direct nodes from the center. The size of the more is the size of the js asset. That third party then injects yet another script onto the page. The next connected nodes represent these scripts and their size. And so on and so forth. These scripts ensure to the advertiser that their ad is actually being shown. The advertiser doesn't trust the hosting page to correctly display their ad, so the ad injects their own tracking script. That tracking script injects their dependencies. Thus this madness.
joeframbach··on Show HN: I combined Milligram, Skeleton, and Normalize into a single CSS project
I can barely read that low-contrast thin font, and I have average vision.
joeframbach··on Apocalyptic Claims About Climate Change Are Wrong
We can't even figure this out in dry landlocked areas. Like Jackson Hole, where people live in their cars while Harrison Ford privately owns half the land, and the other half is protected preserves.
joeframbach··on Ask HN: What will become possible by 2025 in your field of expertise?
Looking at a 10 year window. There's a low probability, but non-zero, that I'll be able to correctly align and distribute DOM elements both horizontally and vertically. I might accomplish this by dropping support for the Internet Explorer family of browsers.
joeframbach··on Working from Home a Guide to Successfully Working from Home as a Engineer
Add a point about your company culture and team communication. This may not apply if you are working by yourself as a contractor or sole developer. But if there's a "home office" (poor choice of words sorry) where all of your other coworkers are face to face, then you need to develop a culture of writing everything down. Build internal documentation of decisions and meetings. If your company is mostly remote or has several locations then it should have this culture anyway (if they're any good).
joeframbach··on I'm Resigning as a Stack Overflow Community Elected Moderator
> Employee Sara Chipps, with the approval of the CTO, fired her and then lied to the press about an observant jew right before Shabbat.

Then wrote a lengthly sob story blog post about what a bad day it was for Sara, with the word "I" appearing 38 times and really nothing at all about how bad of a day it was for everyone else.

> preferred gender pronouns versus gender-neutral pronouns like "they"

Not even. The issue is with the need to care about one's gender whatsoever on a tech q&a site. Your compiler surely doesn't care. What place does a pronoun have on SO at all?

joeframbach··on Sites with dumb password rules
A human has to do the work to turn the password string into a hash and store the hash. At some point in time (or now, even), it's probable that they ... didn't hash the password.
joeframbach··on Japanese anime studio Khara moving to Blender
Well, the commentor specifically wanted to make it about themselves regardless of what the context originally was.
joeframbach··on Kuo: Apple to include new scissor switch keyboard in MacBook
Sounds like you want a hackintosh thinkpad
joeframbach··on Google removed my ads-free app for “deceptive ads”
> And there would probably be better privacy in the world where Mozilla won instead of Google.

In that world Mozilla wouldn't sell your data to Pocket or Stranger Things or whoever knows a bizdev at Mozilla?

joeframbach··on Found hooked up to my router
You type in http://yourbank.com, your bank respomds with a 301 to https, but this helpful router instead takes you to its phishing site. Lots of people wouldn't notice.
joeframbach··on Lambda lifting
Every "FP 101 for JavaScripters" tutorial on the web starts with this same example:

    function adder (x) {
      return function (y) {
        return x + y;
      }
    }
Is this somehow a bad thing to do now, and how would I "lift" it? I don't quite understand.

Pretty much every modern KS library has tons of functions whose definitions look like `const foo = a => b => c => junk(a,b,c)`, and is that really better than just writing a normal foo method like it was 1996?

joeframbach··on WeWork Backs Down on Employee Noncompete Requirements
The irony being that your weak immune system is making you more susceptible to the nasties...
joeframbach··on FWD:Everyone
This also applies to the case where JS fails. What if the browser supports js, but the request failed, or there was a syntax error, or some other fatal that halts js? Your users will be left on a lark without anything to look at.
joeframbach··on PEP 572: Python assignment expressions has been accepted
[found_node.get("value") for node in tree if (found_node := node.find(SOME_XPATH)) is not None]

tree.map(node => node.find(SOME_XPATH)).filter(Boolean).map(node => node.get("value"))

I can deal with either language at this level of complexity. Anything more complicated needs more LoC in either language.

joeframbach··on Microsoft Employees Pressure Leadership to Cancel ICE Contract
By all means they should keep typing the "$" so I can more quickly skip over their post as someone who hasn't changed their worldview since the 90s, and someone who is susceptible to memetic bandwagonning.
joeframbach··on Microsoft and GitHub have held acquisition talks
Apple would charge $100/yr and require Safari for access to Github. Updates will come once per year.
joeframbach··on Fridge 0.1
He has made the fridge "smaller" by putting 17 gallons of water in it (per the scuttlebot link). This is even better than a smaller fridge, because the cold water itself keeps the fridge cool when it is off.
joeframbach··on Conversations with a six-year-old on functional programming
The original is correct, it says "apples" not "apple(s)".
joeframbach··on Never Solved, Cornell University's Dorm Fire Has Become One Man’s Obsession
This must be one of those "digests of digests" Bradbury warned us about. While we're on the topic of arson.

Links to github already get tracking for free from github. Check out https://github.com/montanaflynn/codehn/graphs/traffic. It'll look like this: https://i.imgur.com/NQOjGbO.png (example from one of my projects)
joeframbach··on Show HN: Code on Hacker News
Are you blocking trackers with something like ublock?
joeframbach··on Show HN: Code on Hacker News
Fyi, your links at the bottom don't work.

    <a href="https://github.com/montanaflynn/codehn" onclick="trackOutboundLink(this); return false;">(source code)</a>
Either the tracking thing or the `return false` is causing the click to not actually click. Let's be real: everyone on this site is blocking your tracking whatchamajig.
joeframbach··on Common combinators in JavaScript
Ah, that does make sense. I think this happens in the React world sometimes, where a single state holds the source of truth for everything, and we end up passing parts of it around to other methods to make decisions.

   const data = getDataFromState(state);
   const transformer = getTransformersForState(state);
   const sanitizedData = transformer(data);
joeframbach··on Common combinators in JavaScript
const S = f => g => x => f(x)(g(x));

I'm more likely to write

    const geed = g(x);
    const effed = f(x);
    const S = effed(geed);
I have no idea when I would actually write a structure like this though. Can someone please fill those names in with something like `buildComparator` or `Math.max.apply` or something, anything, that remotely makes sense?
joeframbach··on Utility poles
I'm not an expert, but I can guess it depends on the pole and how it's been treated. The company I called gave me a list of disclosures and guidelines for re-use. Maybe the poles you see haven't been treated with such-and-such chemicals.
joeframbach··on Utility poles
Old utility poles can be reused in many ways too, but they must be outdoors, and not where it can have direct contact with people. Back in 2003 I called a local electric company if they could donate a few used poles to be used as beams for a bridge I was constructing for a local park. They we're happy to oblige. You can sometimes see these poles used in retaining walls and buried alongside hiking trails, used as water bars. I keep an eye out whenever I'm on a trail and am sometimes surprised to see an electric pole miles from a trailhead.
