joeframbach··on Show HN: Footnote – a modern take on Goodreads
Searching/filtering is lost when clicking a result then going "back" to the previous page. Perhaps use a History API to push state?
joeframbach··on Show HN: I'm trying to guess your personality by your comments with an NLP model
This is fake as hell and you should all be ashamed of yourselves for treating it with any sincerity. It's an ad placement for Amazon clicks. That's all. Flag and move on.
joeframbach··on New Jersey legislators aim to ban most in-car subscriptions
I think the next step is to spin off a separate company for FSD. Take media for example. Your Toyota may be compatible with SiriusXM, Pandora, Spotify, etc, but none of these are "built in". The solution to FSD is to "commoditize" the FSD service in the same way. Your new Tesla is "compatible" with the "third" party FSD service that just so happens to only be "compatible" with your Tesla. Nobody would reasonably expect a SiriusXM subscription to come for free for the lifetime of their vehicle, and if FSD is split off into a commoditized third party, it have the same expectation.

Was it Personal Capital? I always thought it was silly that the demo screenshots in the marketing were some absurd amount in the multi millions. Like, who do you think you are marketing to?
joeframbach··on Looped Square Or ⌘
Somewhat tangential, the Command+Q shortcut to immediately, irrevocably, infuriatingly QUIT WHATEVER YOU HAVE OPEN is absolutely diabolical. Considering all day I type Command+Tab to switch applications, and Command+W to close browser tabs. There's no way to remap it to "do nothing", so you have to remap it to do "something else". The best I could figure out is make it show and hide my app bar.
joeframbach··on Looped Square Or ⌘
Sure, but I wish they would at least be consistent. My 2015 external keyboard has keys for "control", "alt/option", and "command ⌘". I'll find documentation online that says "press the ⌥ key" and I'm like, what the hell is that?

joeframbach··on Impact of programming on primary mathematics learning
This studied fourth and fifth graders. However I might add my one irrelevant anecdotal data point from when I was in 10th grade 20 years ago. In an attempt to "cheat" at Chemistry class I wrote a stoichiometry equation balancer with step by step answers on a TI-83. I wrote various solvers for Physics class and Stats class. Working through all the edge cases of these problems helped immensely. Fourth and fifth graders just don't have as many opportunities to apply programming to the real world.

joeframbach··on Show HN: I made a web-based notepad with a built in unit calculator
I'm trying to figure out how many "miles per hour" I get while charging my vehicle. I have a 3.3KW charger and I average 3.1 miles per KWh while driving. I expect that I am charging at a rate of 10.23 miles per hour.

So

    3.3 KW * 3.1 miles per KWh
Says "3.3". The math is wrong and the units are gone.

Actually, it doesn't seem to understand the concept of a KW. I'll try "kilowatt" and "kilowatt-hour" respectively.

    3.3 kilowatt * 3.1 miles per kilowatt-hour
Says "Incompatible units".

The closest I got was

    3.3 kilowatt * 3.1 miles per kiloWh
Says "10.23 kW mi".

insect.sh is able to do that last one.

    3.3 kilowatt * 3.1 miles per kiloWh
    3.3 kW × (3.1 mi / kW·h)
    = 10.23 mi/h

There aren't really any details there either. Still no idea why the bank claims Firefox can't be supported.

joeframbach··on Guest WiFi using a QR code
What's your workflow for this?
joeframbach··on Guest WiFi using a QR code
That is likely the issue. The alternative is to use Lambda to render pdfs on the server side, but I wanted to keep this fully on the client side as a static site (to avoid any trust issues with sending your wifi credentials to strangers). I may have to pay up real $$ if I want to do this "right".
joeframbach··on Guest WiFi using a QR code
I once had an idea to generate "hidden" qr codes in art and photos. Initially I wanted to take a photo of a giraffe and replace one of its spots with a QR code, and hang it in my living room for guests to scan. It turned into this (broken) website: https://www.qraffe.com/. I don't have a lot of time right now to fix it. The pdf rendering is broken. If anyone likes this idea and wants to help with a PR, I'll be mighty appreciative. https://github.com/joeframbach/qraffe
joeframbach··on Amazon EC2 M1 Mac Instances Are Now Generally Available
I wonder about the feasibility of a Mac mini as an AWS Outpost, and furthermore the concept BYOHardware Outposts. In a few years if I snag a used Mac mini for cheap, I envision being able to provision it as an Outpost and have it interop with the rest of the AWS ecosystem. That would be neat.
joeframbach··on Ask HN: Where are all the senior front end engineers?
We're in agreement. It reflects my experience. I had to question the recruiter about it, "How does Google hire FE specialists in Accessibility for example?" and I didn't get a good answer. I assume they throw some fungible engineer at the problem and hope for the best?
joeframbach··on Ask HN: Where are all the senior front end engineers?
I think as you grow in your career you'll tend to specialize rather than generalize. You get really good at a few things, rather than somewhat good at lots of things. The "Senior FE" roles are fewer but more specific. Now and then I see listings for "Performance Engineer", "Accessibility Engineer", and "Infrastructure Engineer", but on further inspection these are actually Senior Front End roles, but not in title.

Recently I went through a generic Sr FE interview at Google (still waiting to find out if I've been ghosted after). There were 5 or 6 rounds, and I feel I totally bombed one of them, excelled at one, and did okay at the others. I think that's acceptable at this level. I went through a "Performance Engineer" interview loop at another company, and the rounds were all specific to the role. I had a much better experience in that interview.

joeframbach··on Leetcode Considered Harmful
I just had this unfortunate experience with Google. The interviewer presented some badly-defined vague problem statement, and started asking probing questions about implementation details right away. I'm trying to ask exactly what the problem is, and he's there asking me for the runtime complexity of the solution I'm proposing. Was this dude entirely checked out? It felt like I was talking to a wall.

Thanks. This is a good case where HN's rule about mirroring the article's title is a disservice.
joeframbach··on Western Digital announces 26TB hard drives and 15TB server SSDs
I'm trying to build a low cost NAS for my paltry needs, but the price per _drive_ doesn't seem to be moving. Every time a larger size is introduced, I scoff at the price for something I don't need, but the price of a 4TB doesn't go anywhere. I bought four drives on eBay, they were 80% of retail price, and all four were dead. It's pretty frustrating but I don't want to spend so much money that I don't have.
