joeframbach··on Wikipedia-grounded chatbot “outperforms all baselines” on factual accuracy
You'll end up with a corpus consisting entirely of paywall text and 404 pages.
joeframbach··on How to register a Kei truck in Pennsylvania
Home Depot rents a big truck for $20-$40 for the 2 hours I'd need it. I could rent this truck every weekend for 30 years for the same price as a giant truck. And I wouldn't have to worry about its maintenance either.
joeframbach··on How to register a Kei truck in Pennsylvania
Well maybe if the giant truck driver was able to see over their hood, they wouldn't be in a collision.
joeframbach··on How to register a Kei truck in Pennsylvania
Here I thought the childmashers were best selling because there is literally no alternative, as is the topic of this entire thread we are in.
joeframbach··on Now Apollo faces the cliff
> Now imagine that the way it worked when you get fired or laid off is that you’re also suddenly on the hook to pay back the last, say, 6 months of your income.

It would be analogous if I were paid my annual salary upfront at the beginning of the year. But it's not.

joeframbach··on Tell HN: 5+ Year Twilio Account suspended without Warning
This conspicuously missing detail tells me that this is the main reason, and they know it too.
joeframbach··on Where in the USA is this?
Agreed. I grew up in Pittsburgh, but even after 10 years after moving away, I immediately recognized the first picture as "somewhere in West Virginia" as if instinctually.
joeframbach··on Ask HN: Are people in tech inside an AI echo chamber?
Genuinely curious - what religions are being described here? It doesn't match my limited understanding of any religions I'm familiar with.
joeframbach··on Twitter now requires an account to view tweets
Every keypress is a history navigation!!! What madness is this?
joeframbach··on Legacy and Athlete Preferences at Harvard (2020) [pdf]
My cynical take is that modern billionaires are billionaires on paper only; not even paper, just rows in some bank database. Utilizing even a fraction of the wealth would lay bare that the wealth doesn't exist in real terms.
joeframbach··on The .meta directory: let's tidy things up
Why not `.config`?
joeframbach··on ELO Everything
When you search for something on Yelp and you get 10 results, to places you've never been to before, and despite not visiting any of them beforehand, you choose one. That's what's happening here, and that's what's happening in Google search results. No difference.
joeframbach··on Show HN: I made an open-source Notion-style WYSYWIG editor
Do you mind defining what "WYSYWIG" means?

I tried using your tool for it.

"WYSYWIG is an acronym that means++"

...

"What You See Is What You Get."

:thinking:

joeframbach··on Show HN: Horizontal News, a column-based Hacker News reader
The columns scroll independently on my device.
joeframbach··on Reddit Strike Has Started
Years ago during the maxwellhill r/technology debacle, many users did that, and we're all banned. My first primary account, which today would have been 13 years old, was banned.
joeframbach··on Ask HN: Any examples of product redesigns that worked?
The Amazon checkout process used to be a series of full page navigations. Changing shipping address - full page navigation. Adding gift card - full page navigation. Pretty painful. Sometime in the past year or two they quietly changed it to a single page app thing. It's like a big accordion where the sections expand and collapse as you go, and that also shows your checkout progress. Normally I prefer full page navigations and I hate the SPAification of the web, except for this.
joeframbach··on Show HN: A simple echo server for testing HTTP clients
Based on this user's post history, I doubt you'll get a response. And seeing that the post was obviously written by chatgpt, I doubt they'll even be back to read your post.
joeframbach··on There’s more than one way to write an IP address (2019)
Javascript seems to normalize these automatically:

    const a = document.createElement('a');

    a.href = 'http://032166163360';
    console.log(a.href);
    // "http://209.216.230.240/"

    a.href = 'http://127.1'
    console.log(a.href);
    // "http://127.0.0.1/"

    a.href = 'http://10.50.1'
    console.log(a.href);
    // "http://10.50.0.1/"

    a.href = 'http://10.0.513'
    console.log(a.href);
    // "http://10.0.2.1/"

    a.href = 'http://0xA000201'
    console.log(a.href);
    // "http://10.0.2.1/"

    a.href = 'http://10.0.2.010'
    console.log(a.href);
    // "http://10.0.2.8/"

and also:

    console.log(new URL('http://10.0.513').host)
    // "10.0.2.1"
joeframbach··on Tell HN: MailChimp blacklists your IP if you open the browser's dev tools
Theoretically you could also write a bookmarklet that could inspect or modify globals. Or a greasemonkey script.
joeframbach··on No Lodash
What does this provide that https://youmightnotneed.com/lodash/ doesn't?
joeframbach··on Seattle could become the first city to ban caste discrimination
Maybe, "self-perpetuating".
joeframbach··on Windows 11: a spyware machine out of users' control
Which actor in your analogy is scorecardresearch.com?
joeframbach··on Show HN: Sudoku with 0 Bells or Whistles
It's tricky for sure to do it without complicating the interface. You'd need separate concepts of allowed notes and denied notes. If I say a not can _not_ appear somewhere, then it should purge that note forever. But how to portray that concept to the user?
joeframbach··on Show HN: Sudoku with 0 Bells or Whistles
I'm not able to auto-generate notes, then delete some of them.

e.g., a row contains the auto-generated notes:

    [1,2,3,4,5] [1,2,3] [1,2,3] [1,2,3]
I can't remove 1,2,3 from the first cell.
joeframbach··on Wait, Are We Supposed to Tip 25% Everywhere Now?
The question is making a pretty big assumption. Allow me to challenge the framing.

"Wait, are we supposed to eat at restaurants now?" - No.

joeframbach··on Ain't it funny how the knight moves?
The text changed since my comment was posted.
joeframbach··on Ain't it funny how the knight moves?
Except, it's not accurate. It says "move the knight to every square" but the game is actually "move the knight to the next square specified".
joeframbach··on Tell HN: It is impossible to disable Google 2FA using backup codes
Anecdotally, my wife works for a pharmaceutical company and is mandated to report possible impacts that people report about a drug, even in casual conversation. People working under this mandate simply avoid these areas entirely. We avoid watching certain Instagram and Youtube personalities with certain conditions in the chance they might say something she has to report.
joeframbach··on A fake job offer gone wrong
No "Marc Cannon" would begin any sentence with "Kindly" either.
joeframbach··on Ask HN: Developer abused “sign in with GitHub”?
> i logged in, clicked through a bunch of pages because its the same drill everytime.

Nah, the list of permissions you were granting were right there. This is on you.
