joeevans··on OhLife is shutting down
Oct 4th, and they're deleting everything?

Can you imagine getting back from a trip to discover everything had been deleted.

It seems like they should give more time than this.

joeevans··on The Oculus Rift Made Me Believe I Could Fly
Correction:

Virtual reality goggles and the Birdly apparatus made them think they could fly.

The copious references to Oculus make me think the Facebook PR team have swung into action, to try to bolster waning interest in Oculus after the disastrous sellout to Facebook.

I'm eagerly awaiting an Oculus alternative, having canceled the DK2 plans. I don't really want to be tying my code into the horrendous Facebook codebase and agenda.

joeevans··on Transit – A format for conveying values between different languages
Can anyone explain what this would mean for the day-to-day programmer?
joeevans··on Ask HN: Why is W3Schools.com a Rock that won't Roll?
W3Schools is the site programming hipsters love to hate... after they've discretely used it to get going in their programming.

A lot of people also use it to get going in their design careers.

It was the original widely used instant evaluation site (you can type some code into an evaluator and see the result).

Hilariously, the main W3Schools hate site, W3fools.com, is one of the truly most horrendous looking sites I've ever seen. That site would have been considered horrendous in 1996, much less now. It shows that the detractors of W3Schools are just insecure hair splitting code nuance boffins totally out of touch with what a lot of people need to do in their day to day work.

I'm not affiliated with W3Schools in any way, other than having been a happy user for quite some time, along with MDN and all the other good resources.

The people who spend their time hating W3Schools are most likely the conceited bastards at work who inject two second pauses into their expressionless answers for questions from the new programmers.

The people who haven't decided hating W3Schools is worth a lot of time are probably those nice people at work who deduce what a new programmer is needing, and happily line you out with enthusiasm.

joeevans··on Chef has shifted away from the open source community model
While I'm still chewing on the general premise... I have to say I really like the way the author quantified the involvement of the various parties involved in chef. That took some work and is useful, so I'm impressed.
joeevans··on Chef has shifted away from the open source community model
Thanks... that's helpful to know where Ansible is coming from in all this. You seem to be following the management pattern of the organizations behind the majority of the tools and frameworks I use.
joeevans··on Aerofex's Aero-X Hoverbike
insects aren't going to be happy about this.
joeevans··on Chef has shifted away from the open source community model
> Additionally having the code on GitHub gives a nice warm and fuzzy feeling that there is no vendor-lock-in, even though there is no other game in town.

What about puppet and/or ansible? Is there something chef does they don't? I haven't been keeping up with their relative capabilities, but last I checked they were somewhat comparable. I don't know how open source puppet and ansible are, either.

joeevans··on Facebook is building an enterprise product dubbed "FBWork"
Oh crap. First google+, now facebook? I hate employers making me use these horrible things. I'm now going to avoid working for companies that do.

> Facebook only knows what you tell it.

Facebook collects lots of information on you if you're a member or not, and much more than you tell it. Don't believe me? Search on those keywords.

joeevans··on Oculus to Acquire Carbon Design Team
I think characterizing discussion of the effects of facebook on oculus as 'Facebook hating' is a pretty cheap dodge of a significant event. A lot of the strategy changes people are making around the facebook purchase are legitimate ones based on reasonable observations of facebook. It's a terrible thing for those of us who were really excited about oculus for so long, but things changed and a reasonable discussion is going to happen.

I think that the argument that facebook adding "tacky social media" components to oculus would be bad for business is incorrect. Facebook has done quite well with the model, as their company shows.

For many of us, we realize that facebook will likely succeed with oculus in some way. It will just be a different kind of party than we want to go to, is all.

joeevans··on Oculus to Acquire Carbon Design Team
That must suck so bad for these designers... one day you're a hot industrial designer, and the next you're working for facebook.

You can make the best designs ever, but if there is just suck inside, your design sucks in a way too.

joeevans··on A SWAT team blew a hole in my 2-year-old son
Then there's the case where the police found drugs in the mail, but let it be delivered anyway. When the homeowner (the mayor of the town, incidentally) came home and brought the package in, they attacked, killing his two labradors (one while it was trying to run away).

After, even though the police had the drugs in their hands when they found it in the mail, the chief said, "We′ve apologized for the incident, but we will never apologize for taking drugs off our streets....Quite frankly, we′d do it again."

Makes you wonder if we really should be militarizing them.

joeevans··on Babel – Nimrod's package manager
With all the options, it's too bad the authors had to choose the name of a popular emacs mode.

Just makes it harder to find either.

joeevans··on The Feature Google Killed The + Command For Is Now Dead
Lol... I never knew the + stopped working... I've been using it all along. I guess I always assumed the search term I was prepending a + to was always in there, somewhere. No doubt I was getting less relevant results.

Without a doubt, the '+' operator is the most important one, followed only by being able to search for a phrase surrounded by quotations.

joeevans··on Wayland 3D Compositor with Oculus Rift and Razer Hydra [video]
Actually... I don't!
joeevans··on Wayland 3D Compositor with Oculus Rift and Razer Hydra [video]
Thanks... you put it better than I did. That was poorly worded on my part. More 'averse' than emotionally detached, though.
joeevans··on Wayland 3D Compositor with Oculus Rift and Razer Hydra [video]
I hope the author ports this to something else than Oculus, since I bailed on it when it sold out.
joeevans··on Ask HN: What is the difference between a junior and senior developer?
Nice dream.

The new crop of developers can push up a full stack app in 3 days, play with it, and iterate the whole process in the following day.

It's a whole new world.

joeevans··on How the Most Expensive Game Jam Crashed And Burned in a Single Day
The article would lead one to conclude the people behind the show will clean up their act and come back with a more sensitive approach.

An alternative possibility is that they will simply keep the format, but find another less discerning group of developers.

I think the latter possibility is the more likely one, and all developers would suffer as a result of the ensuing portrayal.

joeevans··on Ask HN: What is the difference between a junior and senior developer?
Let's be honest.

The qualifications for being a Junior developer are (1) familiarity with new frameworks (2) nimbleness with polyglot approaches (3) ability to code considerably more than sit in meetings (4) an approach towards getting things done, rather than spend time considering getting things done.

Not every developer has the chops to be a Junior developer, but if a Senior developer has the interest and is willing to work hard at it, they can make it.

joeevans··on Facebook acquires Oculus VR
I am so very glad I didn't buy the dev kit, which I was just about to do last month.

The kit would have gone from being a shiny cool thing on my desk to a shiny turd in my room.

joeevans··on Minecraft creator says he’s canceled talks for Oculus Rift version
Yay! Now I can have a unit for $70... so long as I finally sign up to Facebook to be able to use it!

Uh. I think I'd rather pay $1000 than do that.

joeevans··on Minecraft creator says he’s canceled talks for Oculus Rift version
Wha?

Why couldn't Oculus have been it's own company?

Facebook made it without a partner.

joeevans··on Why does anyone still use Eclipse?
If you're a polyglot/polyplatform developer then eclipse based IDE's are awesome. You can drop an eclipse into a directory, untar it, and run it... and toss it away later if you want. Titanium Studio, SpringSource Tool Suite, and, of course, basic Eclipse are all versions of Eclipse. I don't pay a cent, and can make my way through several projects with the same IDE skill set as they all use variations of the same commands. I don't have to deal with annoying and expensive licensing issues. The IDE is free, and the plugins I choose are also usually free. By free, I mean free in all senses. If I want to get someone going on my project, they can download an Eclipse based IDE and get rolling without paying a cent. As a final bonus, most tutorials reference Eclipsed based IDE's... not a paid IDE.
