joeconway··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
do yourself a favour and buy some zip mesh bag on amazon (often used for children's toy sorting; they're much more robust than zip-locks) and use them to group your cables. the big box(es) goes from a source of stress to an absolute delight.

joeconway··on Apple has not destroyed Steve Jobs' vision for iPad
It has essentially always been possible to split the iPad keyboard or have it be iPhone sized and floating. Both are a good experience
joeconway··on It's the end of observability as we know it (and I feel fine)

Excellent recommendation. Watching the videos of his 2yo’s progress is wonderful. I will be trying this, thank you.

I’ll take any opportunity I can to recommend this podcast, and this episode specifically. If this article resonates with you then it is absolutely worth the listen.

joeconway··on Discworld Rules
“As an extended allegory for society and technology it absolutely sucks and is also ludicrously wrong-headed”

> As for any inner meaning or ‘message’, it has in the intention of the author none. It is neither allegorical nor topical

This person needs to cool it with the pseudo intellectualism and let people enjoy things

NSHipster played such a pivotal role in me becoming the engineer I am today. It’s heartwarming and hugely nostalgic to see a mattt post
joeconway··on A eulogy for Dark Sky, a data visualization masterpiece (2023)
in my experience its more like: 0-5% - Sunny; 5-60% - Partly Cloudy; 60-100% - Cloudy;

I've not seen other descriptors, and to view it changing over time its just on the timeline as a sun, sun+cloud & cloud emoji's

It's not useful other than as a binary 'is it cloudy' which in Bay Area weather it is a meaningful difference between 30% and 60% coverage

joeconway··on He created Oculus headsets as a teenager, now he makes AI weapons for Ukraine
This guys PR team has been obviously working overtime in the last few months to make him the new musk. I’m taking note of all the organizations being paid to exhaustingly fawn over the cool new kid of death technology

Ocean carriers already optimize and it’s odd to have the article suggest they don’t. The company Sofar Ocean (https://www.sofarocean.com/products/wayfinder) does it in a particularly interesting way and actually has people using it, rather than a theoretical analysis of a small number of voyages
joeconway··on What's New in Neovim 0.10
This isn’t neovim specific but this was one of the more delightful and impactful discoveries https://shapeshed.com/vim-netrw/

Configuring netrw right and having my vimrc load a side pane with it on load, combined with configuring my tab key to cycle between windows... Perfect.

joeconway··on 400 license plate cameras coming to San Francisco
for this to be true and also for it to be legal to have all your windows tinted is sad and absurd.

I assume it’s legal as in east bay I see fully blacked out windows and windscreens every day

joeconway··on I made an app that runs Mistral 7B 0.2 LLM locally on iPhone Pros
This is really interesting, thank you.

What would be the downside to padding all inputs to have consistent input token size?
