joebob42··on Toyota owners have to pay $8/month to keep using their key fob for remote start
The cabbies take is bizarre to me. Surely choosing to leave is part of reality, not a rejection of it? Why should living in reality require acceding to circumstances at every opportunity?

Unless I misunderstand the context and this quote is meant to be ironic, which seems possible.

joebob42··on Carolina Gold was once the most popular rice grown in America (2019)
Well, no, we've already got rice. Maybe these people are making it better, but just the fact that rice is valuable doesn't justify anything on its own.
joebob42··on How to write idempotent Bash scripts (2019)
I found "Good software is always written in an idempotent way" sort of hilarious.

Obviously idempotency is a powerful tool, but the confidence with which tfa demands it of all software was silly.

joebob42··on Amazon is bypassing supply chain chaos with chartered ships and long-haul planes
Specifically, it's less (made 220, although did have what I think was a strong offer due to internship that went well)
joebob42··on Will World Government Rot?
Over a long enough time period, a small scale organization is kind of likely to just get blown up by a catastrophe because it isn't big enough to absorb it. At least that would be my guess.
joebob42··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?
The mx keys is amazing. It feels so sexy to type on, and I can type far faster and more accurately than anything else I've used.

I've also not charged the thing in months and it doesn't seem to care, which blows my mind.

joebob42··on Blacksmith – Rowhammer bit flips on all DRAM devices today despite mitigations
To my understanding it's still hard to exploit this to steal information / break access / etc just because you'd need to know where the right bits were. On the other hand, if all we want to do is break our adversary's process / crash it / make it perform arbitrary incorrect behavior, this seems substantially easier to accomplish even if we have no idea at all which bits we are flipping.
joebob42··on Blacksmith – Rowhammer bit flips on all DRAM devices today despite mitigations
It might be hard to do a targeted attack. On the other hand, flipping random bits is likely to just start crashing stuff and / or producing incorrect results pretty reliably.
joebob42··on What caused all the supply chain bottlenecks?
Well in an agrarian society property produce money though, right?
joebob42··on The tight-knit time zone data maintenance community
Holy cow was this unreadable. It kept pulling me in with something I was interested in, then never clearly explaining before jumping to the next thing. I oddly sort of enjoyed the whimsy of the writing, but I came away with essentially no new information.
joebob42··on High schoolers are training to drive 18-wheelers amid shortage of truck drivers
Probably at least a little: logistics has improved substantially since then. Also the value of the stuff in the truck is up, I'm not sure how that plays in.
joebob42··on What =delete means
And l3s and l8s write code that needs l7s to maintain.
joebob42··on FTC Puts Hundreds of Businesses on Notice about Fake Reviews
I think it existed before, controlled by larger parties (media etc, professional reviewers and critics). With the rise of the internet, there was a brief period where anyone could share their opinion with you, and sellers hadnt figured it out yet. Now they mostly have and we're back where we were or worse.
joebob42··on Fast character case conversion (or how to compress sparse arrays)
Although as with any "common case performance improvement" this can be risky if what the common case is for a given server changes. We learned that this was what our server did when we launched in a new country and our auth server started needing 1.5x the computer per query. There was an ASCII special case and then an especially bad / expensive Unicode lookup when that failed, which we started triggering way more often.
joebob42··on Gmail password first character is case insensitive on mobile device
Not for every function, just for exit.
joebob42··on Apple requires account deletion within apps in AppStore starting January 31
If you want to delete your account, and your primary goal is to prevent future data going to the owner of the app from your device, why not just delete the app?
joebob42··on Understanding how Facebook disappeared from the internet
Ironically, I read this and thought "I like this and these people are doing the sort of things I like doing, maybe I should think about working with them if and when I need another job."

Sample size of 1, but I imagine that's more or less the reaction they're hoping for.

joebob42··on Leaked Facebook Docs Depict Kids as 'Untapped' Wealth
This doesn't seem that crazy to me? I think Facebook is probably bad for these kids, but obviously that's not going to be facebooks perspective, and of course they are going to want to go after target demographics they don't have.
joebob42··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
This fried my laptop and I assumed it was the stupid machines fault, I can't believe I'm just now learning windows itself is to blame. How is this bug even possible?
joebob42··on Facebook paid billions to spare Zuckerberg in data suit, shareholders allege
I guess the point being more that 1.2 million seems really quite low to do it properly, 24/7.

Perhaps after all the steroids bezos doesn't need the help.

joebob42··on Apple threatened Facebook ban over slavery posts on Instagram
But Facebook is the fan-out link, which does seem special. everything on either other side is 1:1, and then Facebook fans it a million ways.
joebob42··on As a solo developer, I decided to offer phone support (2017)
I feel bad for them, and I try to be nice because it's really $COMPANY_NAME I'm mad at, but they're so completely useless and you have to talk to them anyways. It's hard sometimes with the person actively wasting your time, even if it isn't really their fault per se.

I think there's also a bit of a perverse incentive: making it clear that I'm mad / fed up / about to blow my top tends to get me escalated faster.

I've ultimately settled on being pretty clearly angry, without yelling or cursing or blaming them or anything, which is the best compromise I've found between not being too much of a dick, and not having to listen to their entire useless script.

joebob42··on Australia’s new mass surveillance mandate
Oh yeah of course in a heartbeat. I think the main objection I have to apple / google hoarding my data isn't actually apple / google having them, it's that the government can make them fork it over and so them having it means the government does by proxy.
joebob42··on Facebook apology as AI labels black men 'primates'
Why would that be true? I don't understand the argument that black people would have avoided this.

From what I can tell the only fix here is a hardcoded workaround outside the net, or a substantially more powerful architecture.

joebob42··on Facebook apology as AI labels black men 'primates'
It's not obvious to me what black people would have done to fix this specific problem. Would they have said "oh we should make sure to test the algorithm on blurry images of people in a forest and make sure it doesn't get confused"?
joebob42··on Larry Page: “I think we should look into acquiring YouTube” (2005)
Yeah but this is in 08 right? I was under the impression you can do whatever you want if you aren't already a monopoly in the market

Edit: 05

joebob42··on Use of artificial intelligence for image analysis in breast cancer screening
I see consistent mention of "2 radiologists review". Is there some feasible way to combine two of these models into some sort of metamodel and get a similar benefit? Like is two radiologist review a mechanical way of combining the opinions of two radiologists (in which case let's just do that with the models), or is it that two radiologists actually sit down together and look at the thing which you can't necessary replicate by just using two models.
joebob42··on China has forbidden under-18s from playing games for more than three hours/week
I'm very far against alcohol being restricted for consumption by minors. I think it's completely ridiculous and almost completely counterproductive.
joebob42··on Welcoming our first riders in San Francisco
But the bar to be better than a human in this case is also wickedly low.

I basically can't do this. If it was absolutely necessary I would go out there and drive like 5 mph and be terrified the whole time, but otherwise I would just treat whatever I needed to drive to in a snowstorm at night as temporarily inaccessible. I have lived in places where it snowed in winter before.

joebob42··on Complexity theory puts limits on performance of gradient descent
Yep. I notice mention of this additional constraint from another comment. As far as I can tell the article is just incorrect since it misses this constraint up to that point, unless I'm just a clown and somehow not seeing it.

The upside here is that it seems perhaps I wasn't missing the premise, and it was just mis-stated :)
