joebob42··on Department of Justice announces new policy for charging cases under the CFAA
Absolutely they should. Fix the speed limits so they are not more or less universally wrong / too low, and then enforce them. Discretion on them is ridiculous, it just means a cop can pull you over and ticket you whenever they want because driving safely, the same speed everyone drives on a given road, is technically illegal.
joebob42··on A new career in software development: advice for non-youngsters
The "fair" and probably also reasonable imo thing to do is just pick randomly if you have a bunch of equally good people and can't interview them all.

Or make them do leetcode stuff, I think this situation is basically what that whole part of the process is for.

joebob42··on Riot Games: Artificial Latency for Remote Competitors
There's no consensus involved in the bug.
joebob42··on Riot Games: Artificial Latency for Remote Competitors
I think in practice this issue doubles the added latency, which would only be noticable if the actual ping is "significantly" lower.

Because realized ping is over by as much as original ping was under, so if original wasn't significantly under...

joebob42··on Riot Games: Artificial Latency for Remote Competitors
I suck at lol, the amount of ping it takes for me to be able to tell it's different is only like 30-40 ms. Pro players being able to tell and care at half that seems pretty likely.
joebob42··on Musk Says Twitter Must Prove Bot Claims for $44B Deal to Proceed
Apparently Twitter claims only 5% of users are bots. It seems impossible to me that this claim is remotely true, and I imagine Musk knows this. This kind of sounds to me like he's decided he doesn't want to buy and is creating a reason not to.
joebob42··on Bad government policy is fueling the infant formula shortage
No, it makes the stuff cheaper.
joebob42··on The other kind of staff software engineer
It may not even be that remarkable. A decent fraction of things I can accomplish for $1 I could also do for free.
joebob42··on Tech bubbles are bursting all over the place
I think by the time you're saying "my system depends on the people in it being honest and competent" you've kind of already lost. Some people are competent, most aren't. Many people are honest, but some aren't. You aren't going to change that so you have to be resilient to it.
joebob42··on UST “Stablecoin” at $.43
does this explosion impact the broader crypto marker particularly? I know some of these platforms are interconnected in weird ways but don't know much about it.

And is there any sensible world where it stabilizes at some value other than 0 or 1?

joebob42··on One of Norway's biggest CS players tries playing under a female alias [video]
I know biggest basically makes sense and means most popular here, but I can't get the image of all the cs players lining up to compare heights out of my head.
joebob42··on You shouldn't invest in the crypto currency?
I think one issue here is that there do appear to be people with a mathematical edge similar to the casinos in gambling: the people who create individual coins and who manipulate the market directly.

This may be less of a concern in stabler, larger coins like btc and eth. I'm still not sure I get why staying longer yields any sort of edge, though. If my expected return over some small period is 0, adding a bunch of those small periods together does not yield a positive expected return.

joebob42··on Chat control: EU Commission presents mass surveillance plan on May 11
I don't understand who wants this. does any of their actual constituency want it? Or is it literally just the actual elected officials getting power hungry?

Stuff like abortion, etc where I don't really understand the other side. I've at least met real people who are pro life.

I've never met the people who want these clownish surveillance things but they keep coming up anyways.

joebob42··on UST Stablecoin Loses Dollar Peg
yeah my assumption is you would need to be a platform like coinbase or something where the added convenience for people trading on your platform was the benefit you got from it and it just not costing much was sufficient
joebob42··on UST Stablecoin Loses Dollar Peg
Yeah agree, at least in the case of a crypto which is literally just $ in -> coin out, no caveats, hold the $ and do nothing with it till withdrawal.

My impression is that many pegs don't work this way, but to the extent one did I kind of don't see how it could fail?

joebob42··on Feeling uncomfortable when leaving phone at home shouldn't be normal
The set of celiacs is much smaller than the set of people who think eating gluten free food is a good idea.
joebob42··on Distributed Systems Shibboleths
Am I missing why a distributed lock is an impossibility? The problem stated is that a partitioned node can't know it has lost the lock, but this is only an issue if there is a way to lose the lock short of returning it.

Which I guess is to say: what difference is there between a lease with an infinite timeout unless manually returned, and a "lock"?

Certainly the system deadlocks under partition but I'm not sure why that makes this "impossible".

joebob42··on 3,200-year-old Egyptian tablet records excuses for why people missed work
Well, maybe, except that months are sometimes prime numbers and we subdivide them anyways, right?

I guess weeks don't exactly subdivide months, they're sort of separate systems?

joebob42··on An update on the campaign to defend serious math education in California
I think we could pay more, but only if we could actually get better teachers. So many teachers are bad and not worth even what they get paid (personal experience from a nominally quite good school district). My concern with paying more before figuring out how to weed out bad ones is that it would just be a waste.
joebob42··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
Strangely my reaction was the opposite. I didn't really have tv, and I LOVED commercials, I would even put on the paid programming channels if left alone.
joebob42··on California grid set record of 97% renewable power on April 3
My interpretation is that this was a low demand moment where that 27gw was more or less equal to the demand (e.g. a demand trough not a renewable output spike).
joebob42··on Code Is LOL
I think the comparison to asbestos is off base. Asbestos has very obvious good (it's evidently fantastic at insulating stuff), but also kills you. With crypto the benefit is (at least to me) a bit more obscure, and at least from proponents point of view the harm is avoidable if it's just used properly.
joebob42··on Why I quit this battle
The guy comes off as kind of childish and the people on the site he links appear to know what they're talking about which makes me a bit skeptical.
joebob42··on Top Mac app store dev abuses free with in-app purchase for bait-and-switch apps
I think also that it's often desirable to run multiple steps. Losing 30% from a whole pipeline is one thing, but losing 30% from one transaction out of a couple seems like a fairly big hit.
joebob42··on Are film critics losing sync with audiences?
I could imagine the answer being:

People went to see these movies not because they wanted to per se but because critics said they were amazing. And because they went mostly due to critical reviews, anyone who didn't like it was even more likely than normal to be like "wait I feel tricked this was bad"

This might be a bit of a stretch, but it seems almost plausible.

joebob42··on “This shouldn’t happen”: Inside the virus-hunting nonprofit EcoHealth Alliance
I'm not personally in favor of sizing punishment based on the outcome as opposed to based on the action. I'm not sure how it serves society other than some sort of sense of vindication to kill all these people.
joebob42··on Waymo Sues California DMV to Keep Crash Data Private
It seems reasonable to me. They need to share it with the DMV but it's not obvious to me they should have to share what exactly their vehicle would do in crash situations with the public.
joebob42··on Have economists led the world’s environmental policies astray?
I think the hope is that we bootstrap the renewable capable complex society on top of fossil fuels and then it can continue to function with the renewables it builds.
joebob42··on Ukraine Changes the Face of War Forever
I think it may also not really be fair to call Russia a superpower.

Its hard to imagine the same thing happening between, say, the us and Mexico, but if it somehow impossibly did I think it's possible things would unfold differently.

joebob42··on Please stop writing shell scripts
I totally agree with not writing shell scripts.

As far as I can tell this person is trying to sell me python scripts. My personal take is that I don't want that either, for almost exactly the same set of reasons. Just write the darn thing in whatever your real, main project language is (java, go, c++, whatever). I wouldn't use python just for scripts unless all my stuff was in python, I think code interop and working with all the tooling you've already set up is too valuable.
