joebob42··on Relearning to Learn
Absolutely. When I was younger I was pretty competitive and tried to be good at everything. These days I'm an expert engineer, and I try to let myself do the rest of the stuff I do just for enjoyment.
joebob42··on Relearning to Learn
Having a goal, and creating an environment where you can frictionlessly work towards it for a little bit of time most days, is such an unreasonably effective tool. You'll never become a true, deep expert in something with 10 or 15 minutes a day, but in my experience that's all it takes to become perfectly capable at a lot of things.

A few years ago I started having an hour most days that I devote to learning and trying new hobbies / habits / whatever, and when I find something interesting I start giving it a 20 minutes slot in that hour until I stop liking it or I feel I've gotten what I want to out of it. I'm nowhere near a professional at any of this stuff but I have a fulfilling level of competence in a ton of interesting things now, and it's brought me a lot of pleasure.

joebob42··on The most satisfying checkbox
I'm kind of surprised by all the negative responses. This is obviously a bad idea for a normal ui, but for the use case of "my app is literally just a checkbox and I want it to feel like an event to check it" this seems cool. And that use case really does feel appropriate for a habit tracker app.
joebob42··on The most satisfying checkbox
Hearthstone is such a catastrophe on this. There are multiple fun strategies that are literally rendered unviable because the animations slow you down too much and it's not possible to execute them well within the turn timer (for e.g. infinite pirates or brann in battlegrounds).

It's infuriating.

joebob42··on Hinge and Its Implementation of the Gale–Shapley algorithm
meh i don't know. I have some races I tend to find more attractive on average. There is only one gender I have ever personally had a non-zero sexual attraction to. I don't think this is that rare.

joebob42··on MIT researchers uncover ‘unpatchable’ flaw in Apple M1 chips
Unit testing isn't really the issue here, spectre / meltdown / rowhammer are pretty fundamental design problems.
joebob42··on Dropbox deletes Rick and Morty creators account for secret TOS violation
This whole long thread makes me sad. Not least because I kind of find myself agreeing that tone tags do take something away from the joke. Not to say the commenter is flawed somehow for not getting the context, I didn't either right away.

I dunno, communication is hard I guess :(

joebob42··on Many researchers were not compliant with their published data sharing statement
Why do researchers add these statements in the first place if they are pretty broadly not complying with them? Does it somehow help them get published just to have the statement there?
joebob42··on Behind the Ferrari and Lamborghini rivalry
I'm surprised how few cars this is in total. It's kind of cool the brand has such a big impact with only low thousands of cars.
joebob42··on An insight into live video streaming infrastructure at Twitch
I think that might actually be the issue I have with it too now that I think about it.
joebob42··on An insight into live video streaming infrastructure at Twitch
I remember when amazon acquired twitch. The fact that aws would offer twitch's video delivery platform never occurred to me, but that strikes me as supremely cool for whatever reason.

One random thing I've noticed which jumps into my mind every time I see twitch metioned is that I find youtube's player much better than Twitch's. I'm not even sure exactly what it is I object to about the twitch one, but whenever there is a choice between the two services I prefer the youtube one. Even stranger is that the best player I've personally ever experienced is the one from dood.watch which randomly shows up embedded on shady sites every once in a while. Its weird because I've never seen it used in a non-shady context, and yet it seems to get everything perfectly right: buffering is great, it always perfectly remembers where you are in the video, scrubbing / pausing / etc never randomly breaks it, etc. I'm not sure why it would be the case that this random player is so good, unless there's some weird incentives at play preventing other ones from being as good as they could be.

joebob42··on Cuba about to adopt the most progressive family law in the world
"About to adopt" sounds pretty far from accurate to my reading of the two sources? It sounds like this is still under substantial debate.
joebob42··on Axon Ditches Plan for Weaponized Taser Drones (Majority of Ethics Board Resigns)
I'm glad, but unfortunately I'm sure if the police / government decide they want this sort of technology someone else will build it for them.
joebob42··on Show HN: Pidove, an Alternative to the Java Streams API
I've never liked the streams API. We have a little tool at work that will suggest ways to replace things with stream-api equivalents, and every once in a while I'll get code review suggestions to do it, but it always reads worse to me compared to just using some for loops and if statements. and maybe a helper function if something gets really complex.

This does seem a bit better, would be curious to see in practice if it tends towards the same hard-to-readness or if it holds up.

joebob42··on Data Source Concordance for Infectious Disease Epidemiology
It seems intuitively unsurprising that health insurance claims are not a reasonable source of information for epidemiology, but it's still interesting to see an attempt to examine that scientifically.

Even the government and etc sources probably have some level of outside biases in reporting, although looking at diseases other than covid which are less in the public eye probably helps with this some.

joebob42··on Scientists Discover Ways of Making Old Blood New Again
Sounds interesting, although it's one of those which really probably ought to include "in mice" in the title.

Still, there's so much progress being made in health stuff generally. Makes me optimistic about my older years.

joebob42··on Complex systems collapse faster
Even the fall of the republic to "tyranny" / dictatorship took a pretty long time. You could pick a number of different starting points I guess but I think it'd be hard to argue it wasn't in progress post Sulla, which is like 30 or 40 years before Caesars whole thing. I guess on the scale of history that's pretty short but that's still multiple lifetimes for most people back then.
joebob42··on Complex systems collapse faster
The roman empire seems like an especially terrible example of complex systems failing quickly given it existed in a partially collapsed state for longer than most major empires existed period.
joebob42··on Vectorized and performance-portable Quicksort
Sorting is one of a few things that computers spend so much time doing, even a relatively small improvement over that state of the art can have a big impact.

On the one hand this means if you can come up with a better way to do it in some case that's awesome and could be very valuable. On the other hand it means a lot of people have thought pretty hard about it and the next improvement may be hard to come up with unless you pick a tight enough subset of the problem.

Definitely go for it though :)

joebob42··on Confess your love with zero-knowledge
I mean, you would want to handle this correctly for a "real" thing, but this is just a cute demo and that's gonna be a close enough approximation to work for this I think.
joebob42··on Confess your love with zero-knowledge
I dunno. I'm reasonably well adjusted and apparently even decently attractive, and I still have a super hard time with the whole asking people out thing. I've been lucky enough to have people ask me out but otherwise I'm not sure I'd have had much luck dating at all.

This tool doesn't do what I'd want, but a tool that did would be kinda neat :)

He "discovered" this? This has been my understanding of how this all worked for years, unless there's some subtlety I'm missing here.

joebob42··on Bicycles Have Evolved. Have We?
The pedal bit seems unimportant, I feel like the only relevant distinction is the actual top speed.
joebob42··on Bicycles Have Evolved. Have We?

joebob42··on Top stablecoins shed $7B in May as traders redeem tokens en masse
It's not nobody, but I think it's a lot less than 1% of people that are going to need to send a meaningful amount of money to places like that.

Obviously providing some service to even .01% of people or whatever is valuable. But at this point Bitcoin is valued like Google which is used by tens of percents of all people.
