joe463369··on Sharing Your Netflix Account
Yes! You have a second home and it's a chalet. You can afford two Netflix subs.
joe463369··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
What's he saying though? That connotations of words change over time? Everyone should know that. 'Retarded' used to be a medical term, now it's a 4chan term, so it needs canning.
joe463369··on The golden age of streaming TV is over
These are interesting points, and worth making. But it's quite clear that the most pirated films/Tv programmes are the ones that have recently been released and are freely available if you're willing to pay.
joe463369··on The golden age of streaming TV is over
I highly recommend Cinema Paradiso.
joe463369··on Lionel Messi Is Impossible (2014)
Messi's great but he didn't have to deal with this:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andoni_Goikoetxea#:~:text=Mara...
joe463369··on Lionel Messi Is Impossible (2014)
I'd suggest listening to this More or Less podcast: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0dh54qb
joe463369··on Elizabeth Holmes is sentenced to more than 11 years for fraud
That's hard to determine and presumably why she wasn't prosecuted for it. It's certainly believable that people received false assurances about their health from Theranos that ultimately led to a preventable death.
joe463369··on Map showing birthplaces of "notable people" around the world
JC was actually born in Luton. He didn't move to London until he was 7.
joe463369··on Gamedevs not baking in monetization are “fucking idiots”, says Unity CEO
It's a bit of a non-sequitur, but a charitable reading is that he's saying Frank Stephenson can do this with cars, and maybe Lucas Pope and Jon Blow can do it with games, but most indie devs aren't generational talents, so they should spend some time thinking about how they might convince the public to buy their game.
joe463369··on DMV approves Cruise and Waymo for commercial service in parts of Bay Area
Open up your app. Hit 'Cancel ride', hit 'Unsanitary', wait for the replacement taxi. Really, it's the same problem Amazon had with delivering high value goods when people weren't in. If something goes wrong, assume the customer is telling the truth and try to make it right, but if they're at it, ban them from your service.
joe463369··on What would you pay for autonomous driving? Volkswagen hopes $8.50 per hour
With Volkswagen's "under consideration" plan for their - as yet unavailable - self-driving package, you don't have to pay them to use your own vehicle. You can drive it all you want. However, if you're feeling tired or you've had a drink with colleagues after work, you can pay 7 euro an hour to have your car take you home.

You already have the choice between buying a car outright or taking out a lease. If the unfortunate happens and you can't afford to keep up with the payments on your car, then at some point you're going to have your access to it removed. Maybe not as quickly or as sarcastically as in Ubik, but it will happen.

joe463369··on Stack Overflow sold to Prosus for $1.8B
As helpful as you no doubt would be, until you interact with SO in some way you're indistinguishable from a misleading moron.
joe463369··on 'Irresponsible' London Underground Bitcoin Advert Banned
None of this matters to ASA. All they care about is that the number of pounds you can swap for Bitcoin can go up or can go down, so Luno have to say that in their adverts. They'd be held to the same standard if they were flogging index funds.
joe463369··on 'Irresponsible' London Underground Bitcoin Advert Banned
Yes.

> Advertising must be clear that the value of investments, unless guaranteed, could go down as well as up, ASA rules stipulate.

joe463369··on Statement by UEFA, FA, Premier League, RFEF, LaLiga, FIGC and Lega Serie A
I have to disagree - the Patriots winning the Superbowl or Brazil winning the World Cup are not events that "gratify one's intellectual curiosity." A tussle between the Premier League and the leading football clubs in England is fascinating for a number of reasons.

People in this country love football and this proposal raises an important question - to what degree should governments intervene when the free market is working against the preferences of the electorate.

joe463369··on Statement by UEFA, FA, Premier League, RFEF, LaLiga, FIGC and Lega Serie A
I suspect most football fans are indifferent to the concept of Uefa/Fifa - they just want them to be less corrupt.

What really piqued my interest was your phrase "I think it is brilliant to introduce more competition into the mix" and I wondered if you could expand on that.

joe463369··on Statement by UEFA, FA, Premier League, RFEF, LaLiga, FIGC and Lega Serie A
I'm entirely against submissions along the lines of "Real Madrid win unprecedented 14th Champions League" but this proposal has some interesting facets that I think some HNers might find intellectually interesting.

There's a lot of broadly applicable questions here about the extent to which governments should interfere in the free market for the common good.

joe463369··on Statement by UEFA, FA, Premier League, RFEF, LaLiga, FIGC and Lega Serie A
Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding but isn't this the exact situation that the clubs are proposing?
joe463369··on Photographer Sues Kat Von D over Miles Davis Tattoo
Do we know this? He's not even got a Wikipedia page. My understanding is that photographers earn peanuts and I for one would be raging if some Instragammer was coining it in from copying the one piece of work that made me famous.
joe463369··on Photographer Sues Kat Von D over Miles Davis Tattoo
Jeff Sedlick appears to have created a photograph that is iconic over 30 years later, while the tattoo artist is just copying it. If the point of copyright law is to encourage creativity then don't we want Sedlick to win?
joe463369··on Billionaires Build
Capitalism unchecked tends towards monopolies and subsistence wage for those lucky enough to have a job. I agree this is a product of our human instincts, but the only thing stopping it - short of a revolution - are thoughtful laws designed to balance the entrepreneurial spirit with the need to treat everybody equitably.
joe463369··on Assange Hearing Day 15
"Suddenly, Baraitser repeated out loud the part quote that if prison conditions in the US were good and the sentence were short, then Kopelman’s clinical opinion would change, and ostentatiously typed it onto her laptop, as though it were very significant indeed."

This is not the work of a dispassionate observer.

joe463369··on They're deleting my channel, but they don't know why? [video]
Sounds like it's a factor but not necessarily a deciding one. Also, the phrase used is "nonprofit educational purposes" so if he's got ads enabled he may be out of luck.
joe463369··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
How do we decide the value of companies' externalities if not through a system of government?
joe463369··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
First they came for Jeff Bezos, and I did not speak out...
joe463369··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
If Americans are temporarily embarrassed millionaires, then many of the good people on HN are temporarily embarrassed tech billionaires.
joe463369··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
Cold comfort for anyone born after 1990
joe463369··on I Know What You Download on BitTorrent
How does that work? Do you watch programmes, then send off a cheque to HBO if it meets your standards?
joe463369··on I Know What You Download on BitTorrent
Can you explain why? I can understand why people want things for free, but thinking that you shouldn't contribute towards the production cost of the programme you enjoy seems strange to me.
joe463369··on Ask HN: Is UK government insane or genius?
These may be legitimate criticisms of the UK government's epidemiologists - I'm not in a position to judge - but I'm not sure it explains why we should be listening to Tomas Pueyo on the matter.
