The article is not so compelling for me. I've used my coffee grinder going on 5 years now (almost every single day/multiple times a day). What is true, I find, is that you really get what you pay for (99% of the time).

Ja, the tracks are quite average - but like I just commented in the thread above - maybe one day using art from AI would be like shopping from Amazon (instead of the local store down the road). Crazy times to say the least - impressive tech though.

I totally agree with you actually - but the tooling here is for producing content, not for composing music (like your synth example). It's exactly the same as MidJourney - the target user is not the artist, but the regular user. I wouldn't be surprised in a couple of years we have terms similar to "buy local", but for content generated by AI - like "buy human".

Then you got to explain to me how you define "instrument"? Because what you're describing is kind of the equivalent to comparing a cake to an "ingredient".

Music is a such a human thing, that getting an AI to create it, really kind of bastardises it.

See you're the author - hope I didn't come off as too combative or dismissive. I think my wording could have been a bit lighter (this being the internet and all).

For me I think the definitions were quite "high level" & broad? Stuff like:

That isn't really true or accurate - design systems aren't abstract things. They're a set of aesthetic relationships/rules that govern appearance.

I think maybe a small gripe was the inclusion of component libraries - those are always lumped into the same bucket as design systems by folk who don't really understand design systems. Saying that though, happy to admit I may be wrong.

Let me be the first to object to the "rote" classification. Design systems are hard in a way that good design is hard. For the folks in the comments (and in the article) comparing UI libs to design systems, they are completely different.

EDIT: Evidently, the person writing the article seems to have a very cursory understanding of design systems & component libraries. Maybe better left as a tweet than a full article IMO.

For me, the entire AGI conversation is hyperbolic / hype. How can we infer intelligence to something when we, ourselves, have such a poor (none) grasp of what makes us conscience? I'm associating intelligence with consciousness - because it seems correlated. Are we really ready to associate "AGI" with solving math problems ("new Q algo.")? That seems incredibly naive & reinforces my opinion that LLM's are much more like crypto, than actual progress.

There is so much vagueness around this whole OpenAI thing that it's difficult taking anything seriously anymore - it's almost hearsay at this point. Yesterday it was Altman's personal interests, now it's a breakthrough model, tomorrow it's something else. At the very least it's fantastic marketing (albeit at the expense of their customers).

This is actually something I can relate to. Over the years, I've opted to shorten my name to something more "english" (I'm Afrikaans), simply because it's easier for the people around me - and also because hearing the same jokes & mispronunciations a thousand times becomes tiring. Ironically, living in Germany for a bit quickly taught me it's not always the case.

Because it just doesn't work that way with relational networks. A user is on FB because their friends are - same with Insta & X. You're not building the next best fridge, you're building a community - and that takes time, effort & appeal. It is exactly why social is so hard & takes so long.

Copying a very popular product.... that doesn't depend on a social aspect. Copying social products is way different to copying Excel, etc.

Threads was a dumb idea, clearly pushed by non-product executives. If there were any product people, then wtf were you thinking? You can't expect to waltz in to that arena, zero plan and expect your "Meta" backing to carry you. Especially given that FB has become an absolute mess of a product.

Addendum: I recently re-signed-up for FB in 2020 & 3 years later killed my account because of the sheer amount of irrelevant content. Felt like I was watching bad TV.

Twitter? Try going out to dinner without your phone. It goes way deeper than any single social platform. The way we relate to technology has become so weird.

They focus on the tooling and not pushing a "paradigm" like SRR. Maybe not the best examples I would admit.

I'm not disagreeing with this actually - but I've also never been a massive fan on SSR for React. In addition - NextJS goes further in inhibiting React functionality - for instance: useLayoutEffect doesn't work at all.

I think for me the saving grace is the pervasiveness of the React paradigm. Porting code from React to Preact (obvs), Vue3, Stencil or Solid is easy peasy because the patterns are the same. And thanks god for that.

EDIT: Honestly a web components framework with 1-to-1 likeness in API would be first class. I'd jump immediately.

The general direction React (+ Next) is going worries me a bit at times. I might be too conservative, but I want my JS on the frontend and not hot loaded from the server. For this reason I'm much more excited about Vite/Bun/Dino/etc. Also thank god for shit like Preact.
