jmvoodoo··on DC Taxi Commission Proposes New Rules to Shut Down Uber
Isn't that what a disruptive business is all about? You can't replace an old business model with entrenched interests by asking "please" as far as I know...
jmvoodoo··on Ask PG: What Is The Most Frighteningly Ambitious Idea You Have Been Pitched On?

jmvoodoo··on Girls Need Math
I think C and low level networking are great things for beginners to learn. I started learning C at age 9 and networking around age 12. C is great because it teaches a ton about how computers actually work, and practically forces you to learn CS concepts, without having to go as far as program counters, etc. in assembly. Low level networking is great because it teaches how properly architected systems are built in layers that each serve a particular purpose. It also helps tremendously when building systems later on in your career. You have no idea how many "programmers" I have interviewed that can't even write a bubble sort because all they learned was Array.sort(). Starting with C fixes this problem, and sets the stage for proper learning (and appreciation) of high level languages. The other thing that I would really focus on at a young age is troubleshooting. It teaches you how to think in a way that not many other things can.

jmvoodoo··on Why the U.S. Wants To End the Link Between Time and Sun
I'm definitely looking forward to this debate when/if we ever have a permanent mars colony. Will they still use earth/solar time? Use mars/solar time? Some compromise between the two? I imagine someone living on mars could give two shits if the earth/solar time was off by a few seconds, and I definitely don't want to be responsible for handling two entire time systems in my code.
jmvoodoo··on Coding Horror: The PHP Singularity
I have to ask, because it's really been getting at me for a while honestly. How do your developers react to that? I mean, you guys are known for going after the best and the brightest. People who have worked hard to perfect their craft. These people tend to have strong opinions when it comes to language design. How do you get them from that point to "ok, now write some php code" ?
jmvoodoo··on SwipeGood (YC W11) Is Now Elastic, A Sales-As-A-Service Platform For Startups
I'm in the enterprise software business and there are already a lot of available options for enterprise resellers. The typical reason they fail is essentially dilution (lack of product knowledge or lack of incentive to sell your product vs another). It will be interesting to see how (or if) they manage to solve that. Does anyone from the company want to chime in (to a potential customer if you have a good answer?)
jmvoodoo··on Google launches Compute Engine
I see a lot of comparison on CPU speed and RAM, which is fine, but it seems to me that EC2's biggest weakness is the miserable IO performance of EBS.

If Google has solved the EBS problem, then this could be amazing.

jmvoodoo··on Crush the Castle developer's response to IGN's "In Defense of Game Clones"
Well, there now seems to be case law on the topic: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-06/20/tetris-clone-...

This could be interesting given the sheer number of clones on the app store. I wonder how many game developers actually have trade dress protection on their game?

jmvoodoo··on Data.gov is open source
Yep. They open sourced the equivalent of their marketing site, not an actual data platform. Very disappointing. As another poster mentioned, CKAN is open source, and does include the data hosting platform (based on elasticsearch). Max Ogden has also published two projects that seem relevant: datacouch and (I think) the pdx API for Portland, which are both couchdb based. All three are worth checking out.
jmvoodoo··on Socialcam #1
I mark them as spam whenever I see their stuff posted on facebook. They might not consider it spam, but it pretty clearly meets the definition in my mind. It's unsolicited, and masquerading as an action taken by one of my friends. Total bs.
jmvoodoo··on How the medical supply industry blocks device startups from selling to hospitals
Someone needs to bring BYOD to the medical industry ;)
jmvoodoo··on [dead]
Got it that makes sense. It seems like a link would be a real problem to solve and keep the web usable. The form approach seems easy enough to solve with a dialog. The others that can be solved via tighter cookie restrictions probably should be.. Too many permission dialogs and you end up annoying the user, or worse, train them to accept without reading.
jmvoodoo··on [dead]
Can you explain? My understanding was that cookies will not be sent in these attacks (I validated this only testing some approaches, namely doubleclick and other ad embeds). Without cookies, how would the CSRF attack access my account? Or have I missed something obvious?
jmvoodoo··on [dead]
Isn't this problem also solved by disabling 3rd party cookies? This is a feature already in the browser. I've used it for months and the only thing that I've noticed not working (i.e. the only impact on me as a user) is that integrated disqus forums on some blogs don't work.
jmvoodoo··on Microsoft’s Biggest Miss
Are you sure your lawyer is even using Word? Many still use word perfect. I was just at the office of a state legislature yesterday and they are 100% a word perfect shop.
jmvoodoo··on Megaupload down, FBI Charges Seven With Online Piracy
Regardless of how this turns out, doesn't the fact that the DoJ already has the tools to take out sites like megaupload mean that we don't need things like SOPA/PIPA?
jmvoodoo··on SOPA Opponents May Go Nuclear
"an attempted takeover of the democratic process by industry"

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but the attempt happened a long time ago, and it was completely successful.

There is also precedent for something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_World_Wide_Web_protest

jmvoodoo··on 3.3 million e-mails between the most powerful men are about to be released.
You're wrong. You can foia request any communication between government employees and anyone if it was done in their official role or on government equipment. There are some exceptions of course, but generally speaking correspondence is anything but confidential (at least in the USA)
jmvoodoo··on Even as Zynga slides, bankers reap big fees
The bankers work for Zynga in this case, and it seems like they did a good job for their client by selling a large # of shares at above market.

The fund managers, on the other hand, did a horrible job for their clients here.

jmvoodoo··on Opening *.txt file is dangerous on Windows
So basically send someone a zip file with a DLL + readme.txt. Most people would avoid the DLL but not think twice about opening the readme. Sounds nasty.
jmvoodoo··on Google Buys Motorola For $12.5 Billion
I wonder if Motorola's patent portfolio will be enough to keep the lawyers at bay?
jmvoodoo··on Warren Buffett: Stop coddling the super rich
You have so completely missed the point I'm not sure it's worth arguing with you, but imagine for a moment that the additional revenue from closing loopholes on the rich was used to lower payroll taxes on the average working man, lowering the cost of employment...
jmvoodoo··on Ask HN: Client wrote returned check for over $10,000. How to report him?
It sounds like what he is doing with his wife/girlfriend is probably tax evasion. If you don't care about never seeing the money again then I'd just hand it over to the IRS and explain the whole scam he has going. Unlike the DA, the IRS will probably take action on it and the whole wife/girlfriend thing won't be an issue for them.
jmvoodoo··on The Ballmer Days Are Over
Microsoft has an execution problem. Plain and simple. Their competitive advantage for Windows and Office are huge, I'm not arguing that. However, if you look at the numbers you'll see that they are in decline.

Having an execution problem, long term, kills companies. No matter how great their advantage may be.

jmvoodoo··on The Ballmer Days Are Over
Microsoft is entering what Jim Collins would call the 4th stage of decline: Grasping for salvation. Unless something changes dramatically very soon, I wouldn't be placing my bets on Redmond.
