jmkd··on The importance of handwriting is now better understood
It was the first time a system was developed that took note of how the hand moved ergonomically in order to create a natural way of writing (drawing) unnatural letters, and linking them together.

This system allows you to write cursive with exceptional flow and - if you wish - flair, rather than simply copying complicated shapes and then having that body memory inevitably degrade over the years.

jmkd··on The importance of handwriting is now better understood
If your handwriting looks good and gives satisfaction you will do it more. It truly helps embodying thoughts and ideas, and provides another significant layer (like flavour in a recipe) of learning and understanding.

I was fortunate to be taught Marion Richardson [0] style handwriting aged 8 or so, and decades years later my handwriting is still universally complimented. I hand write letters for pleasure and take notes by hand for more profound impact.

If you look after a young person or are willing to go relearn it yourself I highly recommend the discipline and style that Marion Richardson demands. While learning it at first it looks childish, but it provides a foundation that you will immediately adapt with your own flavour. It got dropped in UK schools in the 1980s for being too old fashioned, for which I read 'difficult'.

Sadly I cannot recommend any modern books or worksheets (through my own contemporary ignorance) but her original books from 1935 still stand up [1]

jmkd··on Impacts of lack of sleep
Fair point, but I find the kind of advice given goes beyond being unhelpful into being actually damaging. It's exasperating at best and makes the 'patient' feel as if no one understands them, or worse that the world is against them.

On balance I weigh the damage of that as more negative than the absence of advice that might help.

jmkd··on Impacts of lack of sleep
I wish people would understand that "just get up early" simply does not and cannot work for a significant portion of the population (20-50% depending on which study you choose).

Therefore it is aggravating advice to constantly receive, from those for whom it worked, to those for whom it won't.

Around 2000 in Germany: https://www.bvnw.de/natur-und-waldkindergaerten/deutschland

450-500 in Denmark here's a good research study including impact on ongoing educational attainments: https://nexs.ku.dk/forskning/idraet-individ-samfund/krop-lae...

About 1000 in the US: https://naturallykatey.wordpress.com/2021/01/08/list-of-fore...

Plenty in the UK, Spain and France too.

There are more projects for early years education than later, and they very typically don't have websites or much digital presence.

Wonderful saying (a new one to me) and appreciate the explanatory article, thanks.

jmkd··on Microsoft Nintendo acquisition hopes revealed by leaked Xbox exec email
Culture fit - while a prominent factor in job interview assessment - seems frequently relegated in acquisition processes.
jmkd··on Microsoft Nintendo acquisition hopes revealed by leaked Xbox exec email
You only need to look at the culture clash of Microsft and Rare to see what a bad idea this would be,

"Microsoft purchased the developer in 2002, and the Stampers departed in 2007. The family atmosphere of the 90s, when Chris and Tim sat in on interviews and left their talented developers to work unhindered, offering occasional golden nuggets of advice, was long gone. “Microsoft and Rare was a bad marriage from the beginning,” Rare’s Martin Hollis told Eurogamer in 2012. “The groom was rich. The bride was beautiful. But they wanted to make different games, and they wanted to make them in different ways.”[0]

jmkd··on The Ultimate-Rare story: 40 years of brilliant British games
I remember reading the address on the back of the Ultimate boxes and seeing 'Ashby de la Zouch', thinking, these are such legends they've just made up a fictional town!
jmkd··on Young people are flocking to astrology
You generalized tarot and astrology based on the predictive elements often seen in the media.

You are completely ignoring the primary motivation of both practices which is very much in attempting to understand yourself.

It's a shame when those who decry alternative systems do so using flawed logic.

Rushkoff has been addressing difficult technology questions since at least the early 90s, so it's fascinating that the industry has not listened much before.

Incredible the negative impact of contemporary fears about journalistic integrity. Fact is they exposed corruption across the city using the only way possible.

Spain. Pretty sure it's very different
jmkd··on Ask HN: Should Amazon maintain a canonical location for customer addresses?
Yeah, it's an easy fix. Couriers routinely waste 20 minutes finding my place, scale that up and surely there's an incentive to resolve it.
jmkd··on Ask HN: Should Amazon maintain a canonical location for customer addresses?
Used it in every way I can think of. It doesn't work. Even when it works, it still requires each courier to interpret and follow instructions, when a simple map pin would get them there without delay...

- make art

Lovely tool! Suggestion: colorized keys should be off by default as some colours are difficult to distinguish if active or not eg those against yellow keys.
jmkd··on Woodworking through the mind of an engineer
Wandel is doing something right, that's for sure. But for me he goes a little too far in ignoring established wisdom in his attempts to reinvent the wheel. While I admire the idea of going back to first principles, debunking myths and applying new perspectives, sometimes you need to acknowledge that things are done this way for a very good reason so let's use that as a foundation, instead of going further back and eventually, painfully concluding that you have not been able to reinvent the wheel.

Here is a particularly egregious example that simply causes harm to those trying to refinish wooden floors: https://youtu.be/mHiF8xwjRGI?t=357

jmkd··on The “je ne sais quoi” of TikTok
Ha, thanks, but you did a great job so I sent it to many folk who have been sceptical or nonplussed on the topic.
jmkd··on The “je ne sais quoi” of TikTok
I don't know. I have listened to a lot of unholy radio, watched a lot of trash TV, played enormous amounts of the devil's rock and roll music and consume unfathomable hours of social media and in summary I feel I'm a better, more educated person as a result.
jmkd··on The “je ne sais quoi” of TikTok
There's little difference between this comment and what people said about every single media advance of the 20th century.
jmkd··on The “je ne sais quoi” of TikTok
Nah. TikTok embraces flaws, problems, doubts, concerns and failures in a way that other social platforms traditonally have not.
jmkd··on The “je ne sais quoi” of TikTok
This is a fantastic article that makes a sterling attempt to get to the bottom of why TikTok feels different to other platforms.

If you're someone who doesn't get it yet, consider it a sign that it's worth your investment in time and energy to really try and get it, if you want to stay on top of how younger people think, work, act and play.

From the article and some comments here a few suggestions:

- TikTok is 'showing' while other platforms are 'telling'. - You don't 'hunt' videos you 'gather' them. - Flaws are truth, so they are typically welcomed rather than scrubbed.

jmkd··on The “je ne sais quoi” of TikTok
For me the biggest breakthrough was understanding that this is not primarily a visual or audio medium, but an idea medium. This is why objectively poor video or scrappy / copied audio makes no difference to success, instead something deeper is being created and propagated.
jmkd··on The “je ne sais quoi” of TikTok
Great metaphor
