jmclnx··on Oracle Triggered the Implosion of the AI Bubble
A rather short article from what I saw. It is comparing the AI Bubble to a Super Nova. A Star runs out of H, it explodes

So, people stop investing in AI, the bubble bursts. Who knew :)

jmclnx··on How much should we worry about the pneumonic plague lableak in Siberia?
>Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan

Surprised Mongolia is not doing the same, seems the City the lab is in is rather close to Mongolia.

But until I read the blog, I felt there are no worries since the lab is in a very remote area.

If we in the US had a functional CCD and still belonged to WHO, I would not care, but now I am a little bit concerned.

jmclnx··on OpenAI "rogue" agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
>NoScript detected a potential Cross-Site Scripting attack from https://duckduckgo.com to https://en.wikipedia.org.

I did not notice, the first message added the '...', above is a recent msg.

I also tried via google and bing, I get the same error.

jmclnx··on OpenSSH Ships on Every Mac, Linux Server and Windows. Its Creator Trusts No One
>Within hours the Linux world was doing triage. Red Hat issued an urgent advisory. Debian rolled back.

FWIW, this issue did not affect Slackware. Slackware tries to use unpatched software plus it does not use systemd.

jmclnx··on OpenAI "rogue" agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
>NoScript detected a potential Cross-Site Scripting attack from [...] to https://en.wikipedia.org.

I have been getting this fro NoScript today, I wonder if it is related. Yesterday all worked fine.

jmclnx··on Watson Jr. memo about CDC 6600 (1963)
The college I was at in the late 70s had a CDC 6600 which I learned FORTRAN. With around 100+ sold, I wonder if that was donated to the school from a company that upgraded their system ? While still at school it was replaced by a CDC 7600.

To me, the system ran very well.

Sad to see all those computer companies disappear over the years, I think there may be only 3 or 4 left making big iron.

jmclnx··on The Tao of Backup
Nice Epilogue
jmclnx··on Declaring a bird extinct: The median wait is 36 years after the last sighting
Could not get into the site, from the wayback machine:

jmclnx··on OpenBSD Developers Reject Uutils Coreutils
>7.7 is expected in April 2025

A bit confusing since the Article it self is dated Sep 30, 2026. Almost makes me thing it is partially LLM.

jmclnx··on OpenBSD Developers Reject Uutils Coreutils
The other issue no one brings up us rust is not available on all Platforms OpenBSD supports. Plus on i386 (32 bit), rust based applications cannot compile due to memory issues, for example Firefox.
jmclnx··on Everyone's Packing Up
I part of the reason is Capthas, something is needed but Capthas are a pain to use.
jmclnx··on Amazon seeks to offload $8B of Nvidia chips to investors
Sounds like a ponzi type scheme to me. The will "sell" installed existing chips to investors and then lease them back. So when the chips are obsolete or replaced, what will happen to the investment ?

Sounds very shady to me. But also sounds like what companies do with real estate, except land does not get obsoleted.

jmclnx··on Alarm Grows over 'Clearly Illegal' US Election Meddling in Brazil
Probably, all they have to do is make sure the dictator is supported by Trump. That should ensure a loss, assuming Brazilian voters are smarter that the idiots in the US.
jmclnx··on US tells France and Germany to release diesel stocks or face US export ban
All this shows is the Trump Admin has no concept of economic theory.

Even if the whole EU release twice that amount now, prices, if they decrease at all before the mid-terms, it will probably be a couple of pennies. But I expect all it will do is temporarily stop the price of diesel from raising.

All it will do is allow Spectators to cash in on profits between now and the midterms.

jmclnx··on European payments groups join forces to challenge US dominance
With GDPR I think it sill will be much much better that what VISA/Mastercard keeps on your activities.

jmclnx··on Red Hat being phased out of existence?
No surprise with this, people who has been following IBM over the years knew this day would come.

>Red Hat's "way" or "culture" or "open source org" is going away, step by step

I went through this and it started 5 years after purchase by IBM and it took another 3 or 4 years before everything was completely gone. FWIW, I have sense left IBM.

jmclnx··on SDF Public Access Unix System ... est. 1987
Plus you can easily setup your own Gopher and/or Gemini site and you can have your WEB site there too.

FWIW, I migrated my WEB Site to Gemini with Gopher as a mirror. Maintaining those on SDF is far easier than maintaining via *panels.

jmclnx··on Why Doesn't Anyone Want to Fix One of America's Scariest Roads?
>and his wife refused to travel on it

Smart person, I would never travel on that road even if the long way is 8 hours longer. And driving in winter ? You have to be crazy.

jmclnx··on Scientists solve 1840s space weather mystery
>1. If it were true, I expect it would be a national security concern, and quickly remedied

You live on Earth correct :) just joking.

Just look at what has been done for Climate Change, we knew for 50, probably 70 years what fossil fuels are doing to Earth. Plus a good estimate was know when Climate Change would affect the Earth. Here we are heading to +3.5C, probably 4C.

Since when a Carrington type event will happen is unknown, do you really think we would prepare for it ? That would cost real money, maybe taking wealth from the super rich.

jmclnx··on MongoDB CEO resigns to join Meta
>Desai led product and engineering at Cloudflare

Well, this could end meta :) Once I get the Cloudflare prompt I bail assuming the site does not what me to read their content.

Yes, the number of sites I go to is decreasing daily, but gopher, gemini and USENET is still around and seems to be slowly growing.

jmclnx··on The Mars Delusion
When I was young, I thought going to Mars or the moon would be awesome. But I wonder if even living or Mars is possible, even if water is found.

I remember reading a while ago if water you drink distilled water and only distilled water long term, it will do you harm. I wonder if the same could apply to water on other planets ? IIRC, it has to do with minerals or something in water here.

jmclnx··on The Apocalypse Will Not Be Sexy
There is far worse coming down the pike than an AI apocalypse, but it is being ignored and some governments are helping it along.

Climate change is a bigger issue, instead our governments are more concerned with AI than the real issue.

jmclnx··on If Carpenters Were Hired Like Programmers (2013)
No complete clauses, showing your work could land you in jail or get you blacklisted.
jmclnx··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
I doubt it, look at all other breaches over the years.

If anything Oracle will "contribute" a lot to congress people's midterm reelection and in a few months all will be forgotten and Oracle will get more Gov. contracts.

jmclnx··on Explaining to business people why building software is still hard
My experience over many decades is this:

* If a business person thinks a change or new program is very easy to do, it is really a very hard project.

* If a business person thinks the change or new program us hard to do, usually it is a trivial project.

For me, this has been true for well over 40 years. I never use any kind AI for my work, it did not exist before I retired.

jmclnx··on One Minute Park
Very nice, shows different parks for 1 minute
jmclnx··on Used ThinkPad Buyer's Guide (2019)
You should try NetBSD. I know people run NetBSD on T480s so the T470 should work fine. NetBSD on that system will seem very zippy, plus you will learn some new things :)

FWIW, posted via NetBSD 11.0 on a T430 w/16G memory and a 2T HDD.

jmclnx··on A Tokyo school counts the mornings it can see Mt. Fuji: 22 in 1965, 170 in 2023
1965 ? If I had to guess it was due to air pollution. Since then I think Japan has put in place strong environmental laws and maybe heavy manuf. moved elsewhere.
jmclnx··on Texas police department ordered to close for failing to provide public benefit
I cannot get into the archive either, a better link:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/sep/15/trinidad-tex...

jmclnx··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
> it's rather that NASA has (?) given up on being the one to do it first

I think the Trump admin decided since it will not make them a profit, like other scientific research already canceled, it is not worth doing.
