jmclnx··on The Mars Delusion
When I was young, I thought going to Mars or the moon would be awesome. But I wonder if even living or Mars is possible, even if water is found.

I remember reading a while ago if water you drink distilled water and only distilled water long term, it will do you harm. I wonder if the same could apply to water on other planets ? IIRC, it has to do with minerals or something in water here.

jmclnx··on The Apocalypse Will Not Be Sexy
There is far worse coming down the pike than an AI apocalypse, but it is being ignored and some governments are helping it along.

Climate change is a bigger issue, instead our governments are more concerned with AI than the real issue.

jmclnx··on If Carpenters Were Hired Like Programmers (2013)

jmclnx··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
I doubt it, look at all other breaches over the years.

If anything Oracle will "contribute" a lot to congress people's midterm reelection and in a few months all will be forgotten and Oracle will get more Gov. contracts.

jmclnx··on Explaining to business people why building software is still hard
My experience over many decades is this:

* If a business person thinks a change or new program is very easy to do, it is really a very hard project.

* If a business person thinks the change or new program us hard to do, usually it is a trivial project.

For me, this has been true for well over 40 years. I never use any kind AI for my work, it did not exist before I retired.

jmclnx··on Used ThinkPad Buyer's Guide (2019)
You should try NetBSD. I know people run NetBSD on T480s so the T470 should work fine. NetBSD on that system will seem very zippy, plus you will learn some new things :)

FWIW, posted via NetBSD 11.0 on a T430 w/16G memory and a 2T HDD.

jmclnx··on A Tokyo school counts the mornings it can see Mt. Fuji: 22 in 1965, 170 in 2023
1965 ? If I had to guess it was due to air pollution. Since then I think Japan has put in place strong environmental laws and maybe heavy manuf. moved elsewhere.

I cannot get into the archive either, a better link:

jmclnx··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
> it's rather that NASA has (?) given up on being the one to do it first

I think the Trump admin decided since it will not make them a profit, like other scientific research already canceled, it is not worth doing.

jmclnx··on Wall Street Is Growing Skeptical of the Data Center Boom
I cannot get into the article or the archive link, from the title seems even Wall Street is seeing AI as a funding black hole.
jmclnx··on Good people refuse to do bad things
Nice to see people standing up for their beliefs even when it could hurt them.

Story time :)

I remember when I was first starting out as a programmer. At QE (always occurred on a weekend) a slew of financial reports were created and printed for review the following Monday then I think used for summaries for Wall Street to look at.

A high level finance manager came to me and asked if the report could be changed, not knowing what he was asking I said sure. After a long discussion turned out he wanted the numbers on the report changed and re-printed. I said it was possible but the numbers would be all wrong.

So he said "do it". I went to my manager and told them what he wanted, then I refused to do it. I said I would quit first because I did not want the SEC to come after me. Luckily they all supported me and the finance manager was told to "FO".

FWIW, that company is long gone.

jmclnx··on Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain
Why meta is not fully banned in the EU is beyond me :)

I know banning or forcing meta to obey laws in the US is impossible due to bribes (political contributions), but in the EU I would think meta could at the very least be reined in.

jmclnx··on What Sun got wrong
And that is the "thing". Every failed mini company had the same exact issue, seems customers had to beg and/or go through hell to purchase equipment. Never mind that the hardware was more expensive than what you cold buy from companies like Dell.

IBM is not much better than what I hear, but somehow they keep surviving. Probably because of their mainframe business.

jmclnx··on Software sandboxing: The basics (2025)
Interesting no mentioned about OpenBSD pledge(2), unveil(2). By far the easiest sandboxing out there. An example:

    #ifdef OpenBSD
      if(pledge("stdio rpath wpath cpath",NULL) == -1)
        err(1,"pledge\n");
    #endif
Very easy, all the other examples seem rather complex to me. unveil(2) is just as easy.
jmclnx··on US Revokes Limits on Power Plants' Climate Pollution
Normally I would be concerned, but these days, we are well on our way to 3.5C. All this will do is cancel out progess China and Europe is making on renewals.

It is to bad these people do not care how much of a sucky life they are handing their grandchildren. Wait to see what happens when millions of desperate people living south of the 40th parallel start heading north in mass. No wall will stop that.

jmclnx··on KDE turns 30 and someone's brought an AI-native desktop proposal
>In 2003, they conducted a usability study of the then newly released KDE 3.1.

>The talk has three parts: what KDE learned – or failed to learn – from that study;

This caught my eye, seems in many forums people still say 3.1 was the best KDE.

But I remember trying out KDE 3.1 on Slackware at the time. All it did was give me extremely severe eye strain after about 1 hour of use. GNOME, XFCE and various Window managers did not give me eye strain of any type.

New releases of KDE still caused that issue with me, but I found a color theme that I can use with KDE 5 that holds off eye strain after about 4 or 5 hours. Again all other DE and WMs, no issues. FWIW, I really like KDE 5, but it can still hurt my eyes :(

I have not tried 6.x and will not see it until Slackware 16 is released. I will give it a shot but with my history, I am sceptical it will be fine for me.

jmclnx··on I'm Tired of the AI Tone

jmclnx··on Microsoft director: AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
He is correct, but why make the statement ? My guess, Microsoft is failing on their AI push.
jmclnx··on Economics Nobel Laureates' Letter Supporting the California Billionaire Tax [pdf]
Money has to come from someplace if you want the US Gov to stop printing money and inflation.

What is hardly mentioned about inflation is the tax cuts for the rich. That increases money supply and forces the Fed to borrow more, or find other ways of raising funds to pay for the government.

So yes, either fix the tax code or enable this wealth tax nation wide, no other choice. One reason people like the 50s was everyone was taxed and most wealth was not in the hands of the few.

jmclnx··on Korea raises data breach fines to 10% of revenue
Sounds great if all the following is true.

* Before Tax Revenue

* If the company is owned by another company, the revenue is the total of all companies owned by the highest level parent.

* Includes Worldwide Revenue

* Includes companies based in all other Countries.

I would have went for 20%, but if he above applies I wish the US would do the same.

jmclnx··on Second Circuit Allows Government to Search Electronic Devices at the Border

jmclnx··on Why Germany Is Building an Ark for U.S. Climate Data
>They will store backup versions of climate simulations from the other side of the Atlantic. The operation aims to ensure that essential work performed by U.S. scientists for the next major U.N. climate assessment, due in 2029, cannot be meddled with or compromised by the administration of President Trump

Makes sense

jmclnx··on Rate limits on GitLab.com are changing

Getting that so I do not know exactly what they are doing. From the title I am guessing they are restricting or throttling if downloads exceeds some value.

jmclnx··on Why Personal Websites Are Coming Back
I actually moved my WEB Site to Gemini with a mirror on Gopher. My site is still active with links to the my G* Sites.

jmclnx··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts

One of the first things that "progressive" politicians should do if they take power is require large companies to disclose the exact number of firings before people are notified.
